He might be losing the QB derby at Alabama, but he's winning at life.

And in the big picture, that's definitely worth a lot more. Best wishes to both of them. And who knows? The kid's just a redshirt freshman, so he may still end up the starter in the next couple of years.

Haven't followed their QB battle. Is he buried on the depth chart right now?

Not at all. I think it's a 2-man battle between Barnett & Bateman for the starting job this season. SEC Network analyst & former Bama qb Greg McElroy thinks Barnett will win the job, while al.com thinks it will probably be Bateman. Barnett had to bulk up a bit to play at this level, but did a very good job running the scout team last year. He's widely viewed as the future of the program.

Hurts is the True Frosh that was enrolled early and playing scout team QB before the natty, right?

Yes. This kid is seriously turning heads and being talked about as a very legit candidate to be the starter. He's about 6'2" 200 lbs., but freakishly strong (big time HS power lifter in TX). Primarily a pocket passer/traditional qb, but has good wheels and can extend the play. Getting a lot of comparisons to Russell Wilson. The big problem is that he's a true freshman. The word is that he has a great attitude and work ethic, and is further along in mastering the playbook than expected, but he's still a freshman and has a lot to learn.

God forbid Saban finally hits on a superstar, natural QB to go along with the rest of the machine he's built.

Might as well chalk up the Tide as playoff champs when that kid's a junior/senior.

I won't feel bad one bit if Barnett never sees the field at Bama. He was a DT QB all of the way, and left the school that would utilize him as such, to go to an offense that makes no sense for his skill set.

I remembered thinking it was weird that he was getting *so* much love, despite having hardly any playing experience at the high school level when he committed to ND. Maybe he was a lot more hype and potential than he is reality.

Well, I mean, he had a Notre Dame golf bag, and he was on film dropping 80-yard dimes on an empty field. That's got "Can't Miss" and "Notre Dame Man" all over it.

Funny thing is if he just followed Hopkins to Oregon he'd probably be starting and dominating. Instead he's never going to see the field.

Maybe he is too consumed with his smoke show fiancee? I know she is hot and all but who the fahq gets engaged their sophomore year in college? Especially if you're playing QB for the team that wins the Natty about every other year...

Nah, unless he totally burned his bridges, he'll hit up Oregon.

Oregon's last two starters have seen a slight and steady downward regression from Mariota, and they'll be looking for an answer. Hopkins will get it worked out.

As a guy who lives in FCS country, the guy they got this year from MSU might be better than Vernon Adams. Pretty good athlete.

I had heard the opposite. A few of the experts and a couple of the preview magazines mentioned that he was a slight downgrade from Adams.

But if you're an FCS guy, I will defer to your judgement.

Watch, he'll throw for about 10 td's and 9 Int. Get benched and erode my credibility.
