We were in NYC for Thanksgiving one year when I was ~10. We were walking to dinner and there was a theater across the street from our hotel that was having an opening night. As we walked by, Regis comes out of a limo to attend. I have a Notre Dame jacket on, so my mom yells his name. He looks over, she points to me and my jacket, and Regis smiled and gave two thumbs up.

I met Ron Powlus numerous times. I live 45 minutes from his hometown, and attended the QB Camp all throughout elementary and high school there that his high school coach and dad put on. He was always there, and I got to talk to him a lot.

I also went out to the ND camp going into my senior year, while Powlus was QB Coach under Weis. I wore a Berwick shirt (his alma mater) on the first day. Another coach quipped, "Hey Berwick! Anyone good ever come from there?" I replied, "Meh decent QB I guess." Powlus came over and warmed up with me and we talked about Berwick football and where I'm from.

At that ND Camp I got a picture with Chucky. My gram still has that mounted in her living room.

Got to meet Claudio Sanchez after a concert (Coheed and Cambria lead singer). Just shook his hand and told him how much I loved their music. Very humble and took a picture with my one buddy.

I met the ND staff as well. In high school I got to go to the ND football camp. I wasn't a big talent or anything, just paid my way like most players. It was Bob Davie's first year (Meh), so I met him, Urban, and Charlie Strong who was my position coach. Charlie commands your respect, he was tough but fair. I learned quite a bit at that camp and improved as a player. Sadly I was there to learn DL and ended up playing strictly OT for the last two years of high school. I never got an opportunity to play DL, but the knowledge was still helpful in other areas.

As far as non-sports related celebrities I met Bruce Campbell in the early 2000s and got him to sign my Evil Dead merchandise. When I was really young, probably about 9 or 10, I met Mark Summers on an episode of "What Would You Do?" I was in the audience with my family, he came up and asked what I could do to make some stuffy lawyer laugh...I did this thing where I crossed my eyes and then rotated one eye at a time back and forth while making a face...he didn't think that would cut it so I got dissed. Fuck you, Mark Summers!

Met Tom Cruise and Demi Moore when they came to Naval Air Station Point Mugu, CA, to film a scene for A Few Good Men. Missed Nicholson by about 5 minutes, I was told. They were very polite, even nice, but they also clearly didn't have time to do more than shake a hand and flash at a smile at us lowly sailors.

My dad was Dick Butkus' driver when he was enshrined in the HOF. I got to go along when he took the Butkus' back to the airport, at the end of the week of festivities. Butkus talked to me the whole 20 minute drive to the airport. He wasn't impressed that I was a Steelers fan, but he was impressed (or so he said) that I knew so much about other teams as well.

I get to meet a lot of people who would be considered famous.
Got to spend a lot of time with William Hurt.
However, the best time is when I had dinner with 6 guys from the Blackhawks last year. I have a close friend who is a well known actor and a bunch of NHL guys love his work. I can't tell you how cool and down to earth Kane and Andrew Shaw are. I am lucky to hang with Bob Baffert every week.

Huh? I've hung out with him a bit and he makes me want to punch him in the face.

My wife ran into Sly Stallone in an Irish pub - the were coming in from the rain and crashed some private party. He was cool about it and didn't kick their asses out. She also had to catch bullfrogs for Fr. Ted in the UP facility for a few weeks - got a picture with him.

I suck - ran into Dicky V on campus once. That's about it.

In San Diego I met Snoop Dog briefly, we talked Celtic FC soccer for what felt like a few minutes but for what in reality was probably all of ten seconds, if that.

At first I was going to say a guy named Chip Ritter, we went to high school together (both play drums) however he is a professional drummer and has been on david letterman, and has quite a few training DVD's and stuff.....He's not super famous nationally, but he makes his living playing drums. At this years NAMM show, he had a viral video that at last check had over 7million views (5 million views the first 4 days the video was posted).

NAMM show:

David Letterman:

that being said, I have met Snoop on a few occasions, a couple times I actually went to one of his homes (in Claremont, CA off of Padua Ave.). My friend was a.......'business associate' of his, I was there when my friend had some business to take care of with Snoop.

The house was cool, not super crazy cool, but very cool. Part of the backyard was a full basketball court that was decked out in all Lakers colors and logos.

The story I was told, Snoop bought that house off of Padua because he was on probation and could not technically leave LA County. So that home, is about as far as you can possibly go in LA county, without being in San Bernadino County.

I did have an in depth conversation with Jay Bilas last year. He was walking off the court at the end of the ACC Tourney and I asked (ie yelled) "Hey Jay, did we earn a X seed?" (don't remember but he was ragging on us on Mike & Mike that morning or something) - he turned and said "YES" - don't remember if he backed that up on the air or not but we are totally tight.

I completely forgot about a cool story. Digger Phelps is from the neighboring town to my hometown. His brother taught at my high school.

So I was in South Bend airport waiting for my connecting flight to Chicago and Digger was on the same flight. I went up and introduced myself and told him where I was from and that I went to ND and all that and we talked for what seemed like an hour about NY and ND and all that. I was actually in the middle of reading his book (the Undertaker's Son") so I had a lot of things on my mind that I could talk to him about. That was easily the most time I've spent with a celeb.

Had the chance to hang out 1 on 1 with Magic Johnson for about 30 minutes when I was a kid. We were checking out of a hotel, and he was checking in, but my dad mentioned I was a Lakers fan, and he just sat down in the lobby and talked with me. I still can't believe he was willing to spend that much time just chatting with an 8 year old fan when he was on the road. I still have the autograph on the wall.

Also went to Christmas mass with Nancy Pelosi, but only actually talked to her for about 5 minutes when she came to shake hands with a donor my family knew.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife
Tony La Russa
Cheryl Miller- actually had some beers with her on a flight.
Matt Kemp

Was lucky enough to throw out the first pitch in uniform at a Seattle Mariners game in 2012 and was able to meet the Mariners and players from the Royals also.

Vitale has a place in Boca Grande, FL. My grandparents see him at mass all the time, he's always showing off his grand kids. My grandpa said he is a pretty nice guy.

At Christmas you used to see the Bush family on the island every year, haven't been down there the last few years so no idea if they still visit. Saw George Bush Sr. give a speech in town one year, also saw the Bush twins (They liked to party back in the day). Never saw G.W, but they said he was around the island at the same time. Lots of Secret Service all over the place whenever they came to visit.

More importantly... Did you throw a strike?

Good stuff, man!

My friend's father used to own a movie sound editing company in Hollywood and we would go there all the time. Actors used to come and go frequently, so I got to meet a lot of people, including the top 3.

My uncle used to be the president of publishing for Playboy magazine and I met the bottom 3 at a pajama party at the Playboy Mansion.

Jamie O'Hara? You take that back! Now I'm curious though, what did he do to earn the dickhead title?

So this was 97?

Yeah, it was the summer before my Sophomore year. Didn't really get to see Davie much, got to shake his hand and chat a bit. I remember being in awe of the new ND coach, even though I was a big Lou fan. Sad how that era turned out in the end. I don't honestly remember meeting Urban, but he was on the staff at the time and we got to meet everyone on staff in some capacity. Spent a lot more time with Charlie Strong.

I was pretty scrawny as a lineman still when I went to that camp, about 180 soaking wet and 6'2". I put on 40 lbs of muscle between my Sophomore and Junior year though and got to start at OT on a new team when my family moved to the Dayton area. I had been playing against 270-300 lbs farm boys as an underclassman, but a lot of these Dayton teams are smaller guys. The average lineman was 225-250, so I fit in pretty well. We won our division both years I started, and got to the first round of State my Senior year before we were ousted by the defending champs. /CSB

I used to manage a sports store in Cincinnati. I sold a lot of shoes to athletes and their families - some of the best encounters:

Anthony Munoz used to bring his kids in all the time. Great guy and great family.

Barry and Byron Larkin used to come in a lot. They were both always very nice and easy to talk to. I did like Byron better, but Barry was always pleasant enough.

Jeff Blake was awesome. One of the nicest guys I ever met. I used to always have to put a pair of the new Jordans on hold for him and he would come in before the store opened on release day to buy them(athlete privilege). I saw several Bengals games because he would leave tickets at the will call window for me to thank me.

The Final Four team from Cincinnati Bearcats. Nik Van Exel was great. Kenyon Martin was not.

I worked for Sentaor Rob Portman's brother's company and Rob would be around quite a bit. Good guy. way different in private than in public. Very quiet and low key.

Flew from Birmingham to Atlanta one time and the entire first class was me and Molly Hatchet. It was a 6:00 AM flight and they had played at the fairgrounds... They hadn't been to bed yet... And they were still drinking... It was nuts...

Molly Hatchet's Guitar Army, huh?

Luck you. Did they break into a little?

My non-work or basketball related encounters.

I went to school with Janet Jackson in kindergarten. (That means she turns 50 this month)
I lived next door to Ron Kittle as a kid.
My Dad was friends with Alex Karras since high school
In the 90's I got to hangout at my health club bar w/ Ozzie, Bo and Frank Thomas (way cool)
OK two offbeat basketball related stories:
Got into a parking lot scuffle at the '97 Final Four because some drunk Kentucky fans kept getting in my buddies face telling him, "You suck Ricky Roe! You sucked in Blue Chips!" When i told them they had the wrong guy and to beat it, poor guy took a swing. Turned out they were right, it was Ricky Roe. Thankfully it was in Indy, Cops let us go and hauled the other guys in.
Chris Carter and I were on the same summer camp team for two years in a row in HS. He was the best HS basketball player in the country in '84. Would have been in the HOF either way.

My favorite star encounter... Through friends, met Jenny McCarthy and her sister not long before her Playboy issue came out in the the early 90's. Crazy Southside Chicago chicks for sure. Worked with her sister later on various projects for Chicagoland auto dealerships.

I met every president from Carter (I am from the town where Three Mile Island is and he came to town in the days following that crisis) to W. And lots of TV news personalities. Being a public affairs officer in the DoD has its perks, I guess. I've interviewed Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin (complete dick), Fred Thompson, Garth Brooks, and Tom Cruz (also a dick) when I was stationed on the Enterprise during my Navy days. I was back stage at a Faith Hill benefit concert for the USS Cole and got to chat with her and Tim McGraw. I also met Dave Mason in St. Thomas and he invited me and a couple of buddies to his house for a cookout. Walked through his front door and there is a huge framed photo of him jamming with Jimmy Hendrix. Very cool.

The first ND game I took my GF to we almost got ran over by Regis and his crew. She was excited, I was rather pissed he almost hit us and was driving thru the grass next to the buildings. Ignoring the sidewall 5 feet away, and road 7.
At the BG game a few weeks ago my son get a pic with Bon Jovi. He's to young to know who he is, but the rest of the family seemed pretty excited.
I'm not one who gets star struck. I don't know why, but to me they're just another person.
