...but it's not fantastic for slot receiver, APB or DB and that's what Davis very well could end up being at ND.

Wimbush is there through '19 so in '20, Book is a GS, Davis RSJr along with maybe another QB like Hooker, your '18 QB will be a RSSo. That could be Phil Jurkovec. The '19 QB will be a RSFr... like Sam Johnson or JT Daniels. If you're 6-0 (tops) and trying to play QB at ND, you might wanna have a back-up plan.

Except you're pretty much the only person talking about Davis moving positions at this time. Until the coaches give Davis some indication he could be moved, he's probably being told he's going to play QB. They may bring in a second QB, but that doesn't necessarily mean Davis automatically moves to slot - see Devin Gardner and Denard Robinson. That and as much as people like to go crazy about hand timed 4.4s and 4.5s with no verification, I'm a bit perplexed that you're not thrilled with that time. Plus, he's got the rest of Spring and Summer to get that time down until his SENIOR SEASON OF HS. He'll be plenty fast by the time he steps foot on campus.

As for the rest of the post I think we should pump the breaks a bit on marking guys down for ND. Teams rarely sign their number 1 or 2 target at QB - it's no different in 2017. The story may likely be the same - might want to let it play out.

I didn't say I guarantee he gets moved, nor am I recruiting him as an athlete. All I've said is he has the physical skill set to do other things and not waste away in clipboard purgatory. That flexibility makes him a take for me and I express that in my comments.

I don't get your Michigan QB mention? Didn't Gardner sit the bench for a couple of years before playing WR during at least one of Robinson's years at QB? Flexibility is a good thing, that's why Robinson is on the Jags. No position in high school offers more flexibility in college than the short, athletic, dual threat QB. They generally have grown up the best football player on both sides of the ball and are QB because it's the most important position. It's common sense they'd be flexible.

In regards to his time. There was talk of sub 11 / 100's, that's fast. 4.63 is nothing special. I thought he'd be sub 4.5. I'm saying this as a former basketball / track hack who ran consistent, ET'd 4.6's. Yes, hand timed 4.4's are between a dime a dozen and garbage. I don't put too much stock into times unless it's this year's Opening Regionals or large meets posted on Athletic.net.

Regardless, I still have no problem with him being a QB recruit if they are going after another guy with more upside. I am not comfortable with them bringing in Book and Davis only, back to back. IMO, that is not the level of QB recruiting ND should be happy with. Would I tell him there's a chance he gets moved? No. I'd recruit him as a QB only but knowing all along he has the ability to shed the clipboard in a few years if he can't rise up the depth chart and/or gets passed by an '18 or '19 QB.

Which brings me to the pump the brakes part of the response. I'm a long term sales strategist. I have to assume & project that ND is going to get another Wimbush level QB. I have to expect that a Phil Jurkovec level guy is going to look at Book and Davis and say to himself, "No long term roadblocks there". I have to assume the Irish are eventually going to go after the best of the plus armed, dual threat QB's on a yearly basis as the MZ, DK, BW roadblock isn't going to be there forever. UGa and Bama don't start off every cycle looking for borderline 4 star RB's. You don't get to the stars by aiming at the moon.

Don't know squat about this kid. But 5'11" (so we know he's 5'10" at best), 87 rating by 247, and doesn't have a single offer that wows me. Is this really going to be our QB to follow Ian Book who had I believe 2 scholarship offers?

Why doesn't ND just offer Davis and all three of his WR's? The Super Package Deal has to be appealing, right? Cedar Hill South Bend?

At least his offer list is better than Martinis

Intel mentioned that he's missing a Rivals even held at his own school to be at Junior Day.

Book had 5 offers (including ND). He was listed at 6-1, 200 lbs and was offered by BK and Mike Sanford. I'm fine with that, especially after watching his senior highlight. He's got deceptive speed and escapability, a quick release and a strong arm.

Davis is listed at 6-0 on several sites and is still a junior in high school (although I think he's probably done growing, I've heard the argument time and time again when I question a recruits height). He's a composite 4 star .91 rating. Also the composite 213 overall and 7th Dual threat QB playing in one of the most competitive high school leagues in the country. Oh yeah, they're also playing Bishop Gorman this year. He'll get a chance to show against number 1 Dual threat QB (who's even shorter than Davis). Not sure who is out there that's better. If you're worried about Book not being able to play why would you want to take a gamble (higher ceiling/lower floor) over a kid that seems like a damn good fit for your offense based exclusively on his height.

Agreed, he does have versatility to move if necessary.

The comparison was in regards to moving Davis if they took another QB. Back when we thought ND would be taking Hooker and Davis, it was almost an afterthought for you that if one was moved to a different position it would be Davis. You based that on his height. Is there another red flag regarding his ability as a QB? Malik Zaire is 6-0, I think he showed in the Texas game he can be great in this offense. Same with Golson. I think that Davis has a better (accuracy) arm than Zaire. It remains to be seen if he has the ability upstairs to handle the offense or be another Golson.

I don't put too much stock into times unless it's this year's Opening Regionals or large meets posted on Athletic.net..

All I'm saying is 40 times greatly differ based on how they are timed. His hand timed 40 probably is sub 4.5. You're consistent 4.6's if they were hand timed probably puts you at a 4.7-4.8. What I do see on film is Davis has football speed. Is he Vick? No. But he can still pull away from DBs and looks like he can juke them as well.

Regardless, I still have no problem with him being a QB recruit if they are going after another guy with more upside. I am not comfortable with them bringing in Book and Davis only, back to back. I get what you're saying. I want ND to land the cream of the crop. I want the number 1 DT QB to sign with the Irish every year, and hopefully he's 6-5, 230 with a rocket for an arm and a 4.0 gpa. Fact of the matter is you can't assume or project that ND will land that kid. That's why they have to continue to scour the country looking for kids like Ian Book that may not have the tangibles - at least not like a Bubba Starling, Blake Barnett, Jameis Winston - but they may have elite intangibles that can make up for their physical shortcomings.

Huge difference between first movement and first step. (Two methods of timing that don't have to do with stop watches or lasers.)

Aren't younger fast kids slower in the first forty yards then they are after decent speed coaching, strength training and conditioning?

I saw and heard, (more than once,) that 4.63 forty was misreported. That it really was a 4.53.

Frankly that sounds more likely with his 100 meter time, and the explosiveness he shows in much of his video.

Anybody got the lowdown?

By the way, congratulations Avery!

Not my favorite QB in the 17 Class and with taking Book in the 16 cycle i figured we would go after a Better prospect.

With that said Reading what he had to say and how hard he works glad to see him get a chance. Welcome to ND AD!

Welcome aboard Avery. Are we looking at any of his receivers? A couple of them looked pretty solid in his film.

Charleston Rambo is on his team and came with him this weekend. I haven't seen anything about his visit though.

According to 247 committed to ND a few days ago. Made it official to coach Kelly on Friday and then made it public today.
