I only know Lovie as a NFL coach - what kind of recruiter will he be?

Who knows, but one thing that has constantly been said about Lovie, is that his players love him. If he hustles, he will get a ton of players.

Tough time to recruit for ND. Michigan and OSU eat first in the Midwest, Illinois has their most attractive coach since I can remember, and Stanford is one of the best teams in the country. Gotta stay a float and hope 1-2 of these come out of picture.

Have you even seen his abs?

Sorry man...I had to do it...and if not me you know someone else will

Question: Knowing Lovie's background as an NFL coach, don't you think if he gets things going for the Illini he would definitely be a flight risk back to the pros?

Like Ty Willingham, he'll be able to really connect with the black athlete.

ESPN: The Worldwide Leader in Sports

Illinois is hiring Louisville's Garrick McGee as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, a source told ESPN. McGee held the same title at Louisville the past two seasons. Although the move is lateral in title, it gives McGee the chance to operate his own offense under a defensive-minded head coach. New Illini coach Lovie Smith helped recruit McGee to Arizona State as a quarterback when Smith was an ASU assistant in the early 1990s. McGee has experience both in the league and in the state after serving as Northwestern's offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach from 2006-07. It will be interesting to see how Bobby Petrino replaces McGee at such a late date, but Petrino's own ability to call and operate the offense is a big plus.

The talk about LSU in Jacob Phillips' thread reminded me of a conversation I had Saturday with an LSU buddy of mine that's fairly plugged in down there. (Sorry if this has been talked about elsewhere)

He said it was no coincidence that Art Briles made his generic apology, out of the blue, last week. Herman is LSU's #1 choice, but Briles is #2. Not surprising to most of us on IE, LSU would have no qualms with hiring Briles, baggage and all. LSU learned a valuable lesson last year in placing all of their bags in the Jimbo Fisher basket. He turned them down and they had no alternative. This time around, they are going after Herman, and have an alternative in Briles as well. (I'd guess they probably have identified one or 2 others as well, but not sure who). He said Miles is all but done, as he'd have to probably win out to keep his job. With games against alabama, florida, ole miss, auburn, a&m, and arkansas, that vey likely ain't happening.

These 2 coaches make sense to me as LSU can hire just about anybody and still keep much of their in-state talent, but the added bonus with the Herman and Briles is they can also get guys out of nearby, fertile East Texas. Could be scary. Also, when teams fire coaches, they usually try and make true changes- i.e., hire a guy with a different philosophy/scheme. In this case, they'd be getting coaches who can truly coach offense instead of a guy whose offense still operates (and executes) like a 1992 high school freshman team.

We shall see.

So Louisanna is getting a $127M worth of federal aid for their flood relief in Baton Rouge and there largest public school thinks it's appropriate to buyout one of the largest contracts in college football and shell out big bucks for Herman? Or even better... Hire a man with the ethical character of Briles?

Real nice Louisiana... Real nice...

Need to make a move on Les before it's to late.

I know he is not a popular choice around here, but I would definitely welcome himz

Probably could pay Les if they wanted to.

I would think M. Sanford would at least get a look. No way I think he would get the job however.

I actually just saw a list of 7 candidates for Purdue, and Sanford was on it.

They will probably have to settle for former DC Brock Spack. He has done very well at Illinois State, and Purdue is notorious for making "meh" hires.

Have to think Oregon will be open at the end of the year as well.

Wouldn't shock me to see Chip back at Oregon next year.

Look no further than Oregon to see what a difference coaching makes. Same school, same Nike contract, same opponents, completely different results.

Yup, Helfrich is a modern-day Larry Coker

The lost scholarships for 3 years from Kelly's days could been the problem... First two years before such a handicap would hurt Oregon, Helfrich did well. Years 3-4 not so good, which is when those additional scholarships would turn into upperclassmen.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure they lost one scholarship in 2014 and one in 2015. Surely not enough to excuse poor performance.
