Watched "The Martian" over the weekend. It was awesome. I was expecting it to literally be nothing but Matt Damon doing "Man vs Wild on Mars," but there was plenty of depth to the plot, and the extent of the cast was a surprise to me. I was also surprised when it won Best Comedy, which is what made me pull the trigger on grabbing it at Redbox. It really was funny, with some appropriate emotional and serious moments thrown in to balance it out. It was a nice exploration of how humans can use humor to cope with stress.
I also sat down and watched "Bad Words," the Jason Bateman movie about the guy taking part in an alternate version of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. It was hilarious. His interactions with the kids when he went into true "asshole" mode were great. The kid that co-stars did an excellent job of playing to his character, as well. You pretty much know what the twist is going to be the entire movie, but they actually catch you off-guard by changing things up in a few ways at the end. Very satisfying.
Saw "Deadpool" in theaters on opening night a few weeks ago, and that was amazing too. The first third felt kind of forced. There were funny jokes, but it was almost over-done. It was like, "Hey, we got the R-rating... how many obscene jokes can we make right away?" But, once the first third was over, the jokes fit much more naturally in with the plot, which also improved, and that's when the movie went from "pretty funny" to "Hilarious." The post-credits scene was the best of all the superhero movies as well, just because of the way the Deadpool character can break the 4th wall.
