This is what I thought initially.

But after watching the replay, it's pretty clear that he was going to try and pick it up to continue the play. By the time he realized he couldn't do it, he was too close to dive for it.

Either way though, you can't think about trying to pick it up in that situation. You have to be diving for it from the start.

Seriously watched this with my mentor, the old ball coach, tonight and he was ecstatic for Peyton, and for the right reasons. Peyton Manning had such an impactful career on football throughout the entire state of Indiana, not to mention his numerous contributions outside of football. Sure, I wish he could have played a better game, but I am extremely happy for Peyton. This is a well deserved final chapter to what is one of the greatest careers ever.
