Very happy to have landed this kid! We can't get em all, but we got to appreciate the ones that we do. Coach D likens him to Denzell Perryman... I am just fine with that! Can't wait to see what you can do on the field Jonathan. Good luck, and congratulations!

Scout: FWIW, “After my official visit to Michigan in December, I came back home and knew I wanted to go to Notre Dame,” Jones said. “I called coach Kelly and silently committed then.”

And, “I wanted my school to be the first to find out,” Jones said. “That’s why waited until signing day. I didn’t want to announce it on Twitter or something because Twitter ain’t done nothing for me. It’s the people and the coaches at my school that have helped me accomplish everything."

That's awesome. I love hearing commentary like this. It's not all about the show for JJ.

Pete Samson says that everyone feels this kid is the future of middle linebacker at ND.

Any comparison between Joe Schmidt and Johnathan was about high football IQ, intelligence, and leadership.

The coaching staff doesn't look at Joe Schmidt as a miss, being that he was recovering from one major injury, and suffered two others during the course of the season.

Johnathan has the speed and instincts to play early, has an extremely wide set of shoulders, and a good frame for adding weight, (without slowing down.) They would like to see him gain another twenty-five or thirty pounds before they have to play him, if possible.

Holding him back a year to mature, or playing him early, out of need, it should be interesting to watch!

His film is interesting, because he shows good mobility and an aggressive first step in the right direction (but it's highlights sooo....) which are what you want in a MIKE. If there's anything to be disappointed about it's his physicality on film. He doesn't exactly "thump" people. How is he going to do at taking on blocks? How much bigger and stronger is he going to get? Those will only be answered in time, but he doesn't exactly have a huge frame.

This is my only real concern. Shedding blocks is about engaging and disengaging which is all done through extension of the arms, basically. He's a long torso, short armed LB. I like what I see from him in all other areas but that should be a concern.

He's got nice feet, good box power, plays with a good base, and moves laterally well. Like you said they are highlights but he seems to have a good understanding of space in pass coverage, which will be important at MLB.

he doesn't "thump" people, but you dont see him going backwards really either. theres some power to be cultivated there, imo.

If it's straight on, a lot of that is in the pad level with the arm extension. Shorter arms typically equate to more power than someone with long arms which can be a plus. Short arms are more of a negative when when trying to disengage going laterally. Anyone know his reach?

I might be misunderstanding what your saying but I disagree. The longer a lever is, the greater force it exerts through the same effort. Jonathan's arms would be considered levers.

That is why Manut Bol was the NBA's mst powerful center and tall guys dominate olympic power lifting.

It's also why its so much easier to lift heavy bags at fulll arm's length.

Full disclosure, I agree that if you put a fulcrom in the middle of a long bone and appplied force, the long bone would be a better potential lever.

Maybe my physics is a bit rusty, but I think the answer is that the longer lever has more potential force, but that must be supported by the musculature, etc. Where as typical human physiology more frequently supports a shorter arm length with more muscle density.

But, what do I know. I didn't get a degree in kinesiology from Fishigan like half their roster.

I agree, that's why I used to get a long pipe to help loosen lug nuts! lol

What we're talking about is a little different. For instance, look at the guys that can typically bench press more weight and/or do more reps. They typically have a shorter reach. Of course the natural makeup of each individual plays a factor.
