Tyler James with Notre Dame Insider has tweeted several times that the push was not after the whistle while others have disagreed. I can't bring myself to watch the play again to make my own decision.

Maybe it is Jaylon's camp/family that is holding it up? ND can't release any medical information without his consent.

Yeah this is kind of delicate I presume. Pretty quick turnaround on Surgery, I've seen a few of my athletes be advised to wait till swelling goes down. I'm thinking get it done by one of the best in the world, get it done quickly, and sell it afterward as successful and damage wasn't as bad as thought and will make full recovery. Just spitballing, but this is probably the advised game plan to not impact draft status as much. I really wish the best for this kid, such a great person and player.

It was an LCL and I'm quite confident in that. MCL injuries usually happen from a hit to the inside of the knee. LCL injuries usually happen when the knee gets bent to the outside.

In this situation, who pays for the surgeons bill?

I think that's a really big portion of why he hasn't declared yet. He's currently still very much covered by insurance while he's on scholarship. I think that changes the minute he declares, because the semester is currently over.

What's crazy about this worst-case scenario is that if it was a MINOR knee injury he probably comes back next year and tries to show he's 100%. But because it's the opposite of that and he won't play football anywhere next year... that pretty much makes zero sense. Got to get to the pros, IMO, and at least start getting paid something while you rehab.

Can he attend school and receive his scholarship if he collects the insurance? Regardless if he can play, it would be great if he could get some free education while he rehabs. Say, keep him on scholarship via medical waiver?

Is this a unique situation where ND is letting him decide where he wants to have the surgery? Because this is obviously different protocol than the usual ACL/MCL injuries, right?

I'm sure he registered for classes in the spring already so he's an ND student under scholarship for the spring semester, therefore he's covered under the University's health insurance. When you declare for the draft, they don't take away your scholarship. He's set through end of spring semester and any summer classes that fall on the 15-16 academic schedule.

My guess is no. The insurance policy would be paid out and therefore a financial gain because of his professional football career. It could be argued either way obviously but if it's a 50-50, expect the NCAA being on the 'NOPE' side of the issue.

My guess is yes. I'll bet the athletic dept is self insured out of the endowment. So it's not like they have some underwriter telling them where they can let Jaylon go and where he can't. Then again, if they do... I'm sure they will cut him a check to anywhere he wants to go anyways.

Could be that your boy Jerry Jones told him, "Come on down and let my guy take a look at it up close 'cause I'm gonna take ya if he tells me you'll be fine by '17."

Had to throw that lil tease in there Cowboi!

I have no idea how this stuff works, but if his agent doesn't cover last semester of school, I wonder if they could negotiate one of those medical scholarships and declare after semester starts for draft. Forgive me if that's a ridiculous suggestion, just looking at angles. I am not up to date on rules of NCAa

He registered for spring classes before break. He had to. No reason not to keep your options open. If he didn't that would be one of the biggest mistakes of all time.

Gotcha. I was thinking more along lines of attending school on the arm while rehabbing.
He won't be doing physical preparation for the draft. My mind works in mysterious ways, sorry if I didn't make sense. Appreciate the response Crusader.

I suffered severe long term nerve damage after severing both of the nerves in my left arm at the elbow. I saw a phenomenal hand/arm specialist considered the best in the nation and one of the top in the world. It's amazing what can be done in some cases. Even arm replacements with some success have been done. With all that being said, elbows aren't knees. It's on a whole different level when it involves a limb that affect your every fiction from the time you get out of bed each day. Not to mention the function and movement lost with most nerve damage issues.

From above article..Smith will have the surgery Thursday in Dallas and it will be performed by Dr. Daniel Cooper, the team doctor for the Dallas Cowboys who is considered one of the very best in the country.

Question for you guys...

Is it better to declare for pro and know that your stock will fall since teams arent sure you will recover from the serious knee injury to old form or

Come back the next year and prove that you are back to 100% form?

To me, #1 would seem to be just flat out being willing to make a lot less signing day. Yes #2 has risk of being injured again but....

Thoughts?

Doesn't matter which team he's on, flying around means he made it back in great shape. Did I mention i'm still sick to my stomach thinking about that injury?
