6-12 months for your average Joe, however:

Some patients are now returning to full activity at six months (and some high-level athletes sooner) following reconstructive surgery.

I think I came back to full function at 8 or 9 months from mine and I was a med student who was just doing home excercises 15 minutes a day and went to rehab every other week. Whatever Jaylon does I'd expect an extremely quick recovery.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if it had as much to do with PED's as it has advances in surgery techniques.

Apparently it's the same injury Bowman had. And Bowman was out for over 12 months.

I hope he comes back and works his way back into the first round.

I still think it was a dirty and unnecessary hit by Decker. They were 10 yards down the field, the play was over and he was getting up from off the ground. F*ck Decker

Come back where? He won't be playing football next year so you enter the draft and get rehab at NFL level plus you get paid.

Is that for certain he won't be able to play next year?

I know Pittsburgh needs help badly in the secondary, but knowing the Steelers' track record drafting linebackers in the first round I wouldn't be surprised if they drafted Jaylon and let him sit a year

I think Steelers fans would hang Colbert by the rafters if he passes on secondary again in the first round... After watching Antwon Blake set the record for most yards allowed in a season I might be okay letting them do that hahaha

Not saying I would want them to take him lol. Why Antwon Blake is starting blows my mind; his backup is much better

Steelers are in win now mode with Ben now 33. And they would also see Jaylon as a 4-3 OLB that wouldn't fit what they do. The talk that they have to take a CB in the first round is nonsense. You take the best player on your board at any number of positions in the 1st round or else you become the Browns. Blake is terrible but Gay is a starter at one corner and Boykin is now the nickel back. Blake has been splitting time with Cockrell. Next year Golson will be back from his shoulder injury.

Not really saying they have to take a cornerback. They need a safety to replace an again Will Allen. Kearse from Clemson would fill in nicely

To be fair, Jaylon is a Linebacker talent that can do pretty much anything you need, except maybe Strong side OLB in a 3-4. I'd say ideally he's a weak side in a 3-4, but he can play inside too.

That being said I agree with the rest of your sentiment

In the Steelers system he'd play Shazier's spot at ILB. But they already have Shazier. Just hope Jaylon makes complete recovery and still plays at very high level in NFL. Just a punch in the gut when I saw him go down.

The dialogue is good but you speak in a lot of absolutes. You and Mike Tomlin kick it regularly?

just trying keep this all straight...no one in ND or Jaylon camp has "officially" put out anything as to the extent of the injury yet, but belief is that it 2 of the following 3 ligaments that were torn: ACL, LCL, MCL...with the "best case" being ACL and MCL...and "worse case" the ACL and the LCL.
and no matter what 2 are torn he is having surgery Thursday? do we know WHERE surgery will be and WHO is doing it?

Wouldn't doubt it if it was Dr. James Andrews. The dude been reconstructing ligaments for 30 years. Best in the business. He repaired Jonas Gray's knee, too.

MCL would be way better than LCL, so here's to hoping that the other reporting is wrong. I'm hopeful ESPN wouldn't run with the story without a really good grasp of what the injury is... so hopefully they're right on MCL/ACL and not ACL/LCL. But I fear it's the latter.

Sources say Notre Dame Fighting Irish LB Jaylon Smith will undergo reconstructive knee surgery

Is LCL the interior one? The one they have to drill through bone to get at? Maybe that the procedure with other ligament damage too and idk. I saw a video of that one and it looks super invasive.

Regardless of the injury, surgery and rehab taken, your body is only going to recover so fast. You have to let your body go through the healing process to a certain point before you can start rehab. Four to six months for a return is pushing it and highly unlikely.

Dr. Andrews performed knee surgery on James Blackmon (IU B-ball) yesterday. Appears everyone goes to him anymore.

LCL is on the exterior of the knee while the MCL is on the inside

Still hearing ACL and LCL. And if you look at the angle of the leg during the injury it makes more sense that it is the LCL.

Hopefully Andrews repairs Blackmon's DCL while he's in there. James' Defensive Collateral Ligament has blown out at birth. No italics.
