When they say Dr. James Andrews did the surgery, he's not actually conducting the surgery is he? Overseeing it? At his office? I feel like every athlete, even D2 guys sometimes, in every sport are getting their surgeries done by him. He has to be so loaded it's not worth his time at this point.

He has an office with multiple excellent surgeons, but I'm sure he sitll does the big names, since that maintains his reputation.

I'm almost positive he's the one that actually does the surgery.

Yeah now that it is out there, that was what I was referring to about being more than a tear. As I was told he was not able to move/feel his foot because of some nerve damage and that's what has me really worried.

Along with that, I was told he is in good spirits, which is good to hear considering he's never had an injury before.

He must have numbness at the knee or thigh for them to be mentioning nerve damage. I've had that since high school from a knee injury.

Hopefully it's the saphenous nerve that runs along the MCL that sustained the trauma. That would cause mostly cutaneous numbness. If it's above the knee and affected the lower branches of the Femoral nerve you are looking at a much greater chance of hindering functionality of the muscle while it still causes numbness of the skin.

Good luck to Jaylon and his surgical team.

Pretty shitty that a kid who has been so invincible over his football career, that now is the time this happens and to this severity.

Man, I hope most of that ends up being due to swelling. Peroneal nerve damage would super suck. So unfortunate

Nerve damage is what ended the career of Marcus Lattimore. Sean Spence, LB with the Steelers, tore ligaments and had nerve damage before his rookie season. Was out of football for two years. Ligaments can be fixed but nerve damage is tough to repair.

I suffered severe long term nerve damage after severing both of the nerves in my left arm at the elbow. I saw a phenomenal hand/arm specialist considered the best in the nation and one of the top in the world. It's amazing what can be done in some cases. Even arm replacements with some success have been done. With all that being said, elbows aren't knees. It's on a whole different level when it involves a limb that affect your every fiction from the time you get out of bed each day. Not to mention the function and movement lost with most nerve damage issues.

Maybe I am getting old but I think of Robert Edwards.

Prayers for Jaylon.

I honestly can't even think about this without getting upset. Here we were just one week ago debating whether he should go to the NFL or come back and now neither option may be available to him. At least not in the way we imagined.

If he declares for the draft, can we as IE then send him some sort of get well gift. Is that extreme or would someone be down to making that work. Pitch in whatever we can. Any thoughts?

He has the option of coming back regardless of his ability to play football because Notre Dame is a stand up institution that enters an honest deal with scholarship athletes. And $5 million insurance policy is exactly what it needed to be. That is life changing money if managed right.

Always heartbreaking to see potential lost, especially with such a stand up kid. No amount of money can compensate for that. I just hope this goes well and a full recovery is in the cards - really would love to see him All Pro for a lot of year (preferably in a Bears uniform).

He can't have the 5 million if he chooses to come back and graduate/rehab here.

I'm not sure how that works, is that correct. Anyone care to specify how that works and what the details of his policy are, if known?

The $5 million insurance policy only comes into effect if Jaylon slips into the second round of the draft, if he even declares.

I'm sure there is a clause for being knocked out of the sport altogether. Would be a bit picayune to say he has to go through the draft undraftable.

From above article..

Smith will have the surgery Thursday in Dallas and it will be performed by Dr. Daniel Cooper, the team doctor for the Dallas Cowboys who is considered one of the very best in the country.
