I don't know the exact age and true school year of Martell but it needs to be mentioned that he and Tyjon Lindsey moved from San Diego to BG for football. If your parents are the kind of folks that would move out of state to play at a prep school then they are the same parents that might have held him back in the 9th grade while in San Diego. That technically would make him a high school, red shirt junior. Just food for thought.

I hear what you're saying and it's very sad parents move kids around just to appease their own needs. Even if he was held back a year, he would still be considered that grade only and his course work would reflect that. From his comment he still has a number of classes to finish. Typically schools that let kids graduate early, only allow them to graduate a semester early. Those that do get an exception to graduate a year or more ahead of schedule are typically brainiacs that have demonstrated a mastery of college level classes early on.

I'm so confused what is going on. I keep seeing tweets that Kyler wasn't at practice because he "was sick" so Sumlin gave him the day off but I haven't seen anyone mention this in here. Can someone basically just sum up in two sentences what is going on? I know they already had one QB transfer a week or two back but is the 2nd QB transferring for sure now?

A&M sites started reporting yesterday that Murray was transferring out of College Station. Sumlin had a presser yesterday afternoon and stated that Murray was sick and not at practice and that he expected him back today and expected him to be the starter for the bowl game. It appears whatever rumors there are right now originated with A&M "insiders." Who really knows at this point.

Thanks. So there is nothing concrete just yet it sounds like, but there is lots of smoke. Gotcha.

Was this a regularly scheduled PC or last minute? If it was last minute, then IMO there is a lot of truth to the rumors and speculation. Why hold a PC just to say your QB is sick?

Throw the flag at me for this one, but Deadspin explains pretty well what is going on and what everyone knows. For anyone that is confused like I was.

This summer, Kevin Sumlin dismissively quoted the hoary old football platitude that “if you have two quarterbacks, you really have none,” bragging that with Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray on his team, both young, former five-star recruits, the Aggies were in pretty good shape. He maybe shouldn’t have tempted fate; Texas A&M could lose both to stunning transfers in the span of a week.

Last Thursday, Kyle Allen, the centerpiece of A&M’s 2014 class, announced he was transferring after two mostly OK, occasionally frustrating seasons. He had lost his starting job twice, first to Kenny Hill (who transferred after last season) to start 2014, and midway through this year to Murray, before winning it back after three games. It’s a constant quarterback controversy in College Station, and it looked like Allen’s transfer would clear things up.

But yesterday, multiple reports emerged that true freshman Kyler Murray, set to start A&M’s bowl game and enter next year as the unchallenged starter, was considering leaving too. From TexAgs.com’s Billy Liucci.

Murray and his family met with Sumlin on both Tuesday and Wednesday; Murray did not participate in yesterday’s bowl practice, after Sumlin told him to go home and think things over.

At his media conference yesterday, Sumlin didn’t give much in the way of specifics, but there are plenty of lines to read between.

On Kyler Murray’s status:

“I met with the family before practice and [Kyler] is going through some things, and doesn’t feel well. I told him to stay home today, so I expect him to be back out here tomorrow.”

On if Murray is considering a transfer:

“I don’t know that I would call it considering. We had a discussion about all kinds of things. I’ve talked to a number players since we got back for the dead period. I’ve been gone for two weeks, we had an official visit weekend, and Kyler is one of many players I’ve talked to in the last few days about a lot of different issues. Like I said today, he is going through some personal things and I told him to stay home today and we’ll talk tomorrow.”

On the concerns Kyler Murray has:

“I’m not going to go into specifics about that. Just like other players, I have discussed a lot of different things, both positively and negatively. Not just with [Kyler], but with a number of other players in the last three days. Those are of a personal nature and discussions have been good, so I expect him to be out here tomorrow.”
I would love to know exactly what’s going on here, even though there are plenty of plausibilities. No quarterback likes being jerked around, and since Johnny Manziel left, Kevin Sumlin has proven much more adept at recruiting highly rated QBs that winning with them (or sticking with them). There’s also the murky future of offensive coordinator and QB coach Jake Spavital, who was involved with the recruitments of both Allen and Murray, and who has similarly come under fire as the Aggies’ offense has scuffled at times. There have been conflicting reports that Spavital will either not be retained at season’s end, or will take another job elsewhere. (Sumlin denied those rumors a month ago, but in recent days has instead chosen not to address them, which is absolutely not the same thing.)

Whatever the problems at Texas A&M, literally every other program is salivating over the prospect of Murray becoming available. He was perhaps the nation’s top recruit last year, and is still just 18 years old.

Don't know the answer to that one. Sumlin did meet with Murray his his parents earlier in the week. Then yesterday the whole transfer rumor blew up and was reported as a done deal by texags.com. Shortly after I heard Sumlin had a presser coming up. Then a four star WR decommits, then word comes out that Speedy got busted for failed drug tests and would be suspended for the bowl game. Other rumors out there about personal issues with Sumlin as well. Not a good week for the entire program.

For the record, nearly all of these kids want to go the boarding school route. It's fun, you mature a lot living away from home, and the sports are top-notch at the right school.

Academically, lots of kids who do boarding school repeat grades for sports. Those schools allow a massive amount of flexibility with your course scheduling. I went the boarding school route and repeated 9th grade. Typically at these schools, you stay with your grade or class in English, but are on your own outside of that. My sophomore year, I was in French 4, Latin 4 (lame), and Pre-Calculus with all juniors/seniors while I was with my class for English. Personally, I had finished up all requirements going into my senior year apart from Art and a second Science course, and I could have finished those up in three years if I hadn't been doing two languages. This had nothing to do with me being a good student (I was not one at all in high school), but it was just the flexibility that they give you at these schools. There was actually a girl in the grade below me who joined our senior class in the Spring and graduated with us since she had finished all her requirements. She was by no means a brainiac.

I definitely don't believe Sumlin in this scenario. On one hand he says that he met with a bunch if players about good and bad topics, including Murray. Then goes on to say that Murray didn't practice because he was sick. So did they meet to discuss something or just to talk about his illness. Sumlin is lying out his ass.

Lots of rumors afloat about Sumlin doing his best to be the TAMU version of Sarkisian. A video of him being walked/dragged to his hotel room while three sheets to the wind is readily available, and I've seen a couple of other stories about him being drunk in public or being stopped by the police while driving under the influence.

Apparently Kyler Murray and Kevin Murray talked again last night and as of this morning it appears that Murray still intends to transfer. Much like the parents of Kyle Allen, the Murrays are not in Sumlin’s corner

This thread honestly bothers me a little bit. We're going to get hit with some karmic justice in short order. Too much schadenfreude.

Remember when some of us wanted Sumlin after Kelly left. Good God, if he's a storm in Aggieland, he'd be an F5 in South Bend. I appreciate our current set-up more now than ever.

I only hope Swarbrick stays another 20 and he finds a way to keep this train on the tracks.

It's gotta be a heck of a thing to be the head coach at a major CFB program. Sure, the money's great and there's the fame & glory, but imagine the headaches, the pressures, infighting amongst staff, dealing with boosters who all think the checks they write make them experts on football and give them the right to make demands, dealing with prima donna 18-year-old recruits, and riding herd over 100 college-aged kids with egos.

$5 mil a year will buy a lot of aspirin. But yeah... I think we sometimes forget the other side of coaching.

That's why they get the big money. I don't feel for them. The vast majority know what to expect before taking a position.

If Murray is being blocked from going to any P5 school, the Delaware Blue Hens must be licking their chops!

1. That's silly
2. If karma like that exists, every school is making fun of A&M right now so there needs to be a lot of "justice" doled out
3. Do you remember their boards about the Heisman race in 2012? If anything this is the karmic justice.

I believe that if he were to head to a JuCo for a year he would be eligible for the MLB draft. He was considered a borderline 1st/2nd round guy coming out of high school. Also, his desire to play baseball at A&M might be recognizing where his future lies.

Sadly, it's called the offseason. I guess most of us are just getting used to hearing bad offseason ND news.

Got caught up at work and couldn't respond earlier, but Lax, bad news is going to happen regardless of what we as fans do. I expect that from ND. So I'm thoroughly enjoying this right now and will continue to enjoy it. In fact, I keep coming back to this site just to read this thread, hoping for more LOL. We’ve dealt with enough drama so I always enjoy when others have to go through it as well…ESPECIALLY when they are in the SEC! SEC! SEC!

If they actually try this, the best case scenario for Murray would be to publicly put everyone on blast. A&M would absolutely cave and/or Sumlin would get fired.

Can you imagine the Twitter rant that went something like: "ATTENTION ALL RECRUITS: DO NOT GO TO TEXAS A&M, KEVIN SUMLIN IS AN ALCOHOLIC AND A LIAR"

Also, I'm 100% sure that Sumlin promised him he could play baseball when he was recruiting him.

It wouldn't surprise me to see them do this, to some degree, apparently Kevin Murray is a very outspoken individual.
