Take away the Redzone turnovers and replace them with at least FGs and add the missed XP.... 30-16 is what I might have expected.
Apologies if this was discussed already, but what was the incident between teams that Kelly was talking about at halftime? Something between the GA's?
Who did I bet all my Vbucks that we would win out?
I purged my PM's and lost it. It was someone with a lot more
cash than me!.. so it must be a vet.
Grahambo? TKO? BGIF?
I literally don't even know what we're talking about at this point, so I'm just gonna leave this thread and get on with my Sunday.
Okay the redzone turnovers have been replaced by FG's and we've added the missed XP. ND is up 30-16. But wait there's more, if the BC receiver catches the pass when he's 2-3 yards behind Luke it's 30-23. If the field is about a yard, yard and a half wider on the second half kick off it's 30-30. And if the BC player doesn't rough the kicker on the missed FG attempt, ND loses.
It's great to say "Well if ND didn't do this or did that they would have won by more" but the same goes for BC.
Except all their what ifs are BIG and ours are very plausible since we we inside the 10.
I'm not sure I really understand what you mean by saying that BC's what ifs are BIG.
A BC received dropped a sure TD pass when he was at the ND 20-25 yard line and the closet ND player was 2-3 yards behind him. It wasn't like he had to get past anyone if he catches the pass. Ill give you the second half kick off, more than likely he wouldn't have scored. But the roughing the kicker penalty allowed ND to keep possession and ultimately score a TD after missing a FG because of a penalty that is very preventable.
The original poster wants to take ND negatives and turn them in to a positives to make it look better for ND without doing the same for BC. I'm only pointing out that if 2 or 3 plays were different for BC then ND could have easily lost the game.
You could go through hundreds of close games and do the same.
I just think the what ifs for ND (4 fgs) are more probable than the what ifs for BC. Statistical averages say the same.
I think a byproduct of having a shitty defensive system like BVG has where everyone is thinking rather than playing fast and making hits, is offensive fumbles. In practice everyone is so worried about lining up right, being in the right spot and understanding overly complicated play calling, there's no emphasis in stripping the ball. Sure Im sure he says to strip it, but is time actually spent on it? Not enough and you see that in the lack of turnovers thisdefense causes. Since the defense is never stripping in practice/summer, offense cab em get away with being careless and they don't learn the habits of protecting the ball.
You're right, I could go through hundreds of close games and do the same but I don't need to. Since the original poster wanted to play the what if game I was merely pointing out the what ifs for BC.
By the way I would bet lots of money that statistical averages say that ND doesn't turn the ball over 5 times in a game, but they did last night.
ND won I guess that's all that matters.
LOL this isn't true at all. First of all, we've had very fumbles this year. Second of all, the offense plays against scout team defense which doesn't run BVG's schemes but rather tries to mirror what the opponent does.

While I would love to see more turnovers I would much rather see great tackling technique. Such as Jaylon and Shumate.
Shu is the best tackler on the team, IMO. Jaylon a close second.
Despite this, Jaylon's tackling was atrocious last night.
Really? I didn't watch all of the game super closely, so I might be wrong on this, but if I remember right BC's offense didn't go anywhere for large chunks of time and this was usually because Sheldon Day was blowing plays up.

FIFY
I distinctly remember Jaylon missing more tackles last night than any other game this year.
Looked ugly but:
- BC has #1 Overall D (255 ypg / 4.1 ypp) - ND got 447 yds / 6.2 ypp
- BC #1 in Rushing D (77 ypg / 2.1 ypp) - ND got 127 yds / 3.7 ypp
- BC #13 Passing D (179 ypg / 6.4 ypp) - ND got 320 yds / 8.4 ypp
- BC #5 Scoring D (14.8 ppg) - ND scored 19
- Against BC, CLEM got 532 yds / 6.8 ypp with 2 INTs albeit 34 points
ND has lost their starting QB, RB, TE, #6 OL, NG, Nickel, Dime, SAM...and is a 2-pt conversion dropped pass from 11-0. TCU and UCLA have had injuries and are losing.
No one looks good every week and the past two weeks have been a concern but they are 10-1 with a legitimate shot at the CFP.
Their Top 4 wins (Navy, Temple, Pitt, USC) are 34-6 against other opponents (.850). They beat Stanford next week and that looks even better.
I think most would have taken 10-1 with a shot at CFP despite the schedule and that list of injuries. I know TCU and UCLA fans would.
He has done a ton of good this year and a ton of bad.
As for the game....10-1. No team outside of maybe Alabama is above the crowd this year. Every team is very even in the top 10 in my opinion. Just win and get to the next week.
Does anyone else think BC should have kicked a FG as soon as they were in range at the end of the game yesterday? I think teams that are down 9-11 with under 3 minutes left should almost always do this as I think timeouts are better used on defense.
In other words, even if BC did not recover the onside kick they would have been able to use their timeouts to get the ball back (assuming they could force a 3 and out).
Offensive line play is inconsistent.
Tackling continues to be a problem.Defense though saved the day when the offense was running on 3 cylinders. To beat Stanford they will need to decide how bad they want to play in the BCS.
