I actually think Clemson is the key to the equation for the Irish. If they falter, I could see ND dropping behind an undefeated team. The best case scenario would be for Clemson to run the table and finish at #1

Time to pump the breaks a little bit here. As a few have already said, these are the INITIAL rankings, and the jockeying hasn't even begun.

It's still gonna take a combination of:

-Big 12 to go into cannibal mode
-Ohio State to wipe out the rest of the Big Ten
-Clemson to stand pat
-The SEC to not finish with 2 one loss teams

And most importantly:

ND RUNNING THE MOTHERFUCKING TABLE!!!!!

*Im along for the ride at this point, and dismissed any further playoff talk after the Temple game. Hope this team makes me gag on crow.

How highly they think of Clemson is really the key to our ranking. It's quite clear that we are all rooting for Clemson moving forward.

The hate for Iowa in here surprises me. Y'all are hating on their schedule, but think ND's is that much better? Don't be such homers... we've beaten garbage for the most part, just like Iowa.

I wonder if the win over LSU in last year's bowl game helped put us just behind the SEC teams?

My preferred chaos would involve underdogs to win their respective conference championships and would root for Florida, Iowa, Utah and North Carolina.

Surprised to see Bama and ND this high. I don't necessarily disagree with it, just surprised to see it. I think it's promising that the committee seems to actually be ranking teams based on how good they truly believe they are instead of becoming too focused on a single factor such as SOS.

We also have to remember that a 1-loss (to us) Navy team plays #13 Memphis this weekend. If Memphis struggles defending that triple option and loses, we'll get a huge bump from having that Navy win under our belt.

Cool to see us so high and great motivation for the team, but....

it still doesn't mean anything if a Big-12 team goes undefeated. We seem destined to finish behind Clemson, SEC champ, B1G champ no matter what. Baylor or TCU would 100% jump us if they finish 12-0. TCU was #4 going into the last week last season and finished #6 so we can get jumped at any time even without a loss. Great for us to be ranked this high, but IMO we still don't fully control our own destiny by winning out.

Right. I'm stunned (and thrilled) to be ranked as highly as we are, but the conspiracy theorist in me is thinking the following: we are 'in gracefully' to be 'out gracefully.' We will stay at #5 even if we win out and other teams will just jump over us as needed: so Bama or LSU will fall behind to #6, but Baylor will leap us. This is just a scenario, not a prediction, and obviously I hope it doesn't happen. But style points are going to matter, and we need to start winning big.

Undefeateds TCU and Okl.St. play Saturday. One goes down by the next ranking. I never saw them ranking ND at #5. Great news. 1 loss Navy could move into the top 25 with a win over Memphis Saturday.

I don't understand why people are rooting for Clemson. If they win out, we stay behind them but with a "good loss." If they get crushed by FSU, they drop, hard. That's better.
