So per this ESPN article Weis is finally coming off ND's books. We're finally done paying him.

In honor of Charlie Weis and Notre Dame, 20 worst dead money deals in sports

Wow.

If the money stays the same through his final payment in December, Weis' total buyout will come to just short of $19 million and his total compensation paid for his career in South Bend will be around $49.5 million. Weis goes down as the buyout king, as he then made his way to Kansas, where he earned $15 million for 12 wins, including the $5.63 million still on the books after he was fired in the third year of a five-year deal.

Who the hell negotiated that deal? They need to be dismembered.

Surprised the Bonilla deal is so low on the list.

I said the same thing. Mega props to his agent for pulling that. Good grief.

Also, regarding Weis: One has to think that this frees up a ton of money to put into the current staff, no? Does anyone know more on that?

I am so glad that this is finally coming to an end. I don't blame Weiss for cashing in, but damn, this is his alma mater. How the hell could someone do that to their own school? I guess they taught him very well lol.

More importantly, I will never forgive him for 3-9. That's some bull****!

This is absolutely disgusting. I find this hard to believe and almost impossible to stomach. Good riddance coach!

So with this contract officially off the books, it'll be easier to attract more top tier coaching talents, right?

I'm no fan of Charlie Weiss as a football coach, but he signed a legal contract that the university was obligated to follow. The contract settlement allowed Charlie to exit with quite a bit of financial security, particularly in regards to caring for his daughter. In exchange, the university was allowed to move on from Weiss. Both parties benefited from the settlement.

The bottom line is that you shouldn't sign a contract unless you are willing to follow the provisions contained in that contract. If I remember correctly, it was the university that wanted out of the contract (for obvious reasons), not Charlie leaving for a better coaching position.

I never had too much of an issue with Weis' offence. When you score 35+ a game you should win. But then there is the defence that gave up 40.

I sometimes wonder how different it would have been if Charlie Strong hadn't gotten talked into staying at UF (he was supposedly going to the D Coordinator job under Weis).

So was the horrid recruiting that Tyrone achieved. When the Quinn crowd left the cupboard was bare.

I'm surprised coaching contracts never contain negative performance clauses. Obviously, many contain incentives for success, but 3-9 should have resulted in reduced pay. If a coach balks at such a clause, why the hell would you want to hire him?

To be clear, I'm not saying that there shouldn't be allowances for the randomness in college football. Such a clause should only kick in when your team is something like 2 AP rank standard deviations (time average) away from your average recruiting rank over the last four seasons or something like that. I'm reasonably sure that someone with access to ESPN's metrics could probably prove that the average MAC coach could have achieved 6-6 in 2007.

Willingham would have been fine then. Recruiting rankings dropped into the 30s and 40s.

The "39th" ranked team (I know, I cheated...I'm using the "others receiving votes category...) at the end of the 2007 season had 9 wins. For the 2004 season, the "38th" ranked team, had 8 wins. Weis wrapped it up with 3 wins, Willingham finished up with 6. I'm not sure if that satisfies the criterion or not given that I'm not going to find and crunch the numbers to be rigorous, but it definitely appears to be a statistically significant underperformance. Perhaps the 2 standard deviation suggestion is too loose; maybe that would have to be adjusted. I don't know, but the point is that I'd like to see coaches hit in the wallet for statistically significant underperformance. The golden parachute thing is bullshit.

I totally understand what you're saying. My immediate thought was that it would be easy to avoid it by having recruiting classes that aren't as highly rated. That's all.

That is the obvious caveat. I wonder if you could reasonably bind a coach to a standard of recruiting.

I saw this and couldn't help but see some irony in the fact that just days apart, Weis comes off the books and BK becomes the career victory leader for all active coaches.

After two years his teams resembled him. Slow, out of shape with no heart. The team he had with 3 wins would have been 7-8 wins with a real HC. I can only imagine that people come up to him at Walmart and call him out on his swindle.
