Come on. The two positions where we are not deep at are Safety and RB

I thought SC was the target date.

Any word on if he can play after the bye. We need him for depth and special teams

Not that I've heard but I'd like to think he would be. With that said, Kudos to Shumate for shutting the door on any chance Avery has of seeing the field at SS. I don't mean this as disrespectful to Avery more as a congratulations to Shumate for playing so well and leaving no doubt that he's the starting SS.

Oh man.. me too. I have been waiting on Shumate to play up to where I thought he could. He was my favorite DB in that class. I am really glad he has his foot hold and is playing great.

Shumate is another guy who ultimately will be the victim of previous poor depth on defense (no longer an issue it seems, thank God). He would have benefitted immensely from a red shirt year.

He played really well his freshman year as the starting Nickel. More than anything I think it was just the transition last year where we lost him a bit. His performance so far this year tells me that he understands football, he just needs to keep seeing/doing the same thing.

Good point Lucky, other than CJ I think Shumate is hands down the most improved football player on this team. Also Steve Elmer has been playing very well and doesn't get a lot of love.

First TD in USC game was on Shumate. He whiffed on sacking Kessler on the 2nd down. He misses too many tackles

I'll agree that the play should've been made, Schmidt was also there and couldn't make the play. No excuses, should've been made. However, he's done a very good job open field tackling this year. Very much disagree with your bolded statement.

Shumate misses a few tackles but he makes a ton. Also when he hits guys they tend to go down.
Either way, hoping Avery gets back and contributes (tho if he can't, what are the rules on a 5Y getting a 6Y?)

Almost impossible. You have to miss TWO years due to medical to even qualify, I think. Jason White at Oklahoma got it, but he had two horrific injuries, if I remember correctly, and he still had to beg, borrow, plead to get a 6th year.

Not sure if discussed in here or not but it was news to me.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Avery Sebastian is eligible for a sixth year, Kelly said. “We’ll have to see what he’s capable of doing for us over the next couple weeks."</p>— Mike Monaco (@MikeMonaco_) <a href="https://twitter.com/MikeMonaco_/status/659038979468230656">October 27, 2015</a></blockquote>

Still looks like he is still 2-3 weeks away.

Wait, would he be eligible for a sixth year if he played more this year? Or must he be injured for the rest of the year?

It would be nice to have him around next year. he and Drew would be a nice replacement to Shumate.

This would be BIG for next year. Can't imagine him ever getting up to speed this season. May as well stick around for a 6th.

Does the guy want to stick around another year? I don't know his NFL prospects, but going to class and playing football for 6 years would get old.

Seems like a no brainer whether or not he wants to play in the NFL. If he does, he's not going to get drafted this year. Another season can only improve that situation. If he doesn't, then it would be in his best interest to improve the education portion of his rèsumè.

Yeah seriously. God I wish I was still on a campus and playing football for a national power to top it off...you can't beat that.

ND depending who stays or goes should be a top 5 team next year. I think CJ Proise and Fuller both return, we lose Stanley on OL and martin but have enough depth. Defense will have holes to fill but have a ton of young guys ready to step up.

At this point with Shumate, Redfield and Farley it's unlikely he plays much this season. Even if he does he'll be rusty. Barring an injury, makes sense to try to save home for next year when two of those three are gone.
