More on this: Scout: Boykin ready to follow Zaire

Incoming freshman receiver Miles Boykin will soon wrap up a Florida vacation and begin the transition to Notre Dame. Offseason workouts and summer school will give way to fall camp. Boykin is eager to make an impact by following the lead of starting quarterback Malik Zaire.

Once basketball season ended Miles Boykin took about a week to let his body recuperate.

After that moratorium the incoming freshman receiver got to work on the workout plan supplied by Notre Dame after National Signing Day. He augmented that regimen with skill work on the field, hoping to tune his route running before arriving in South Bend.

After that moratorium the incoming freshman receiver got to work on the workout plan supplied by Notre Dame after National Signing Day. He augmented that regimen with skill work on the field, hoping to tune his route running before arriving in South Bend.

Boykin is up to about 227 pounds, with his report date a week away. He’s done the work and is ready for the transition, including the one in the classroom.

“It’s definitely going to be hard,” Boykin said. “I’m obviously looking forward to getting with the team and the coaches all the time. I’m actually even excited about school. Getting down there, just getting in the atmosphere of being a college kid. It’s coming up soon. My last few days of being a high school kid, I’m trying to enjoy it. I’m definitely ready for college.”

Before making the move from suburban Chicago to Notre Dame, Boykin will wrap up a Florida vacation.

Getting away from home has let the former four-star prospect not only relax but reflect on the process that took him from avid Irish hater to a part of the team. Boykin never would’ve believed that transition could have happened early in his high school career.

Visiting South Bend for the first time changed his perspective.

“It’s almost surreal sometimes,” Boykin said. “People still bring it up to me almost every day like, ‘Hey, remember when you used to hate Notre Dame?’ It’s just so crazy how things change. I think that’s also the spiritual part of my life. God put Notre Dame there for a reason for me. I went to Catholic school for a reason and he made me take that visit for a reason. I’m definitely in tune with my religion and how that plays out in my life.”

Boykin gave Notre Dame a verbal pledge last July. He never wavered on it during a final high school season that included an Illinois State championship for Providence Catholic.

He took a postseason official visit, then signed in February without issue. When he returned for spring practice, Boykin met up with quarterback Malik Zaire, now the starter with Everett Golson at Florida State. Boykin’s relationship with Zaire has already started to take shape.

“It’s been awesome,” Boykin said. “I went there during spring practice when both him and Everett were there and he sat down and talked to me a little bit. He was really cool. Then I messaged him on Twitter and he just said, ‘Get ready to go because we’re going for a national championship. So be on board.’ My message back to him was basically, ‘I’m ready to do whatever you want. Tell me what you guys need and our freshman class is down to do whatever for this team.’”

Boykin sensed in Zaire an unquantifiable leadership factor.

“I think leaders have that certain thing about them that whenever you get around them you just know they’re that person to follow,” Boykin said. “They’re that person you want to lead. Just me being around him so little, I know that I’m ready to do whatever for him. In my eyes he’s gonna be a huge leader and a huge role model for me. I’m excited for that alone.”

Soon enough Boykin will be able to follow Zaire’s lead in person, straight onto the field. When it comes to gauging personal success this season, it’s simply cracking the lineup.

“Definitely getting time on the field,” he said. “I’m not going there to sit. I’m going there to play. I’m gonna work my tail off every play, every rep I get in practice to try to make a name for myself while I’m there. I’ll do anything it takes for my teammates to win.”

It will be interesting to see how his career plays out. 6'4-5" and 227 lbs is a damn big freshman WR. If he can run, look out.

From watching his basketball films, I'm comfortable saying he is more athletic than C. Robinson and at 227 he's 10 pounds heavier than Shark was while in South Bend.

He could be something special. Him, ESB and AJ are going to be NOOOO fun for other teams in the redzone.

I agree that these guys may be match-up nightmares in the red-zone. Hoping that we establish the ability to pound the ball in on the ground first...this will really open it up for those guys.

I don't usually make a lot of predictions but I made 4 guarantees this year. The Hawks would win the West, MZ would be the starting QB regardless of what EG did, ND would win 10 plus games and ND would own the ground. I'm half way home.

I haven't been this confident with ND's overall outlook since 1992.

So, he caught a barracuda – was it with his bare hands?

And away from his body?

If he caught that with his bare hands, he probably wouldn't be catching balls on Saturday.

I had one of those swim right in front of me while snorkeling in St John. Scared the crap out of me.

I've "met"a number of barracuda snorkeling in the Keys and the Caymans. I showed them deference and they returned the favor.

In the wise words of Douglas Adams, "Don't Panic."

Kid could be a hybrid WR/TE for us.

He played both in high school didn't he?

We already have hybrid WR/TEs, why not just keep him as a monster WR? Smythe, Alize and Weishar all fill that hybrid role if needed. I'd rather bring out our hybrid WR/TEs lined up with Robinson/ESB/Boykin, talk about matchup nightmares.

This kid is insanely talented. Faster than anyone would guess, great hands and body control, mega-size, and incredible strength, (15 reps of 225 on the bench as an incoming freshman!)

No doubt! But do you know how that would rate for wide receiver candidates in last years combine?

The top 25 ranged from 23(2) to 8; Miles would have been number 12!

I agree the kid is special and my favorite WR in the class. He's going to need time coming from a run first program the didn't refine his WR skills to the point of making him an early option at ND.

The only real knock on him is that he plays quite stiff at the moment. The kid has al the tools though,. He's got size, strength, speed, toughness and hands just going to need some time and experience but IMO he could be special when it's all said and done.

As for whether he's a WR or WR/TE hybrid. Well what I think from what I've heard, read as well as good old deductive reasoning is that in the end he's more of a hybrid WR the other tall WR like Robinson and St. Brown currently on NDs roster.

What Boykin was told, I heard was that they want to use him like Eifert minus actually lining up as a true TE.

So essentially he's going to be like former UNC TE and the top TE in the 2014 NFL draft Eric Ebron who was listed as a TE but it was in name only as he only lined up as a true TE like 9% or 11% of the time. The majority of the time he was in the slot or as one of the outside WR's.

He's to physically gifted to keep off the field for to long but he's definitely not in the same mold as the Robinson or St. Brown as that type of tall WR. He really is more similar to the Smythe, Jones and Weisher than those two. Essentially he's like the FLEX-TE's moving all over the place to create mismatches other than he won't ever lineup inline like true and traditional TE like Smythe, Jones and Weisher would.

Screw Stanford's jumbo line package...ND will be running the 5-wide jumbo receiver package.
Robinson, ESB, Jones, Smythe, and Boykin on the LOS with Luatua lined up next to Zaire in shotgun.

Reps, sir! Here is the thing, in watching the highlights of days one through three, tell me that MB, ESB, and AJ aren't all big fast threats with more speed that is imaginable. After all AJ ran by Drue Tranquill for that TD in day two, and all indications are DT is back after the ACL, and DT is no slouch when it comes to speed!

Also, I have heard regularly, and seen once or twice that Corey Robinson is much faster this year. I don't know how that is possible, (for a third year player to increase his speed noticeably, unless it is a physical maturity thing, because he finally looks a lot stronger, when db's try to jam him on the line.) But by my count that gives us four receivers 6'4" to 6'6" tall that can move. What a matchup nightmare if managed well!

I am sure that I heard Kelly, (and it may be just fantasy), say that ND had four or five tight ends that could contribute in certain situations, and that there could be a situation where most of them could be on the field at the same time for a given play! WTF?!?!? How can that kind of thing be defended. Kelly really seemed enamored with the idea of having two tight ends on the field! With Smythe in the highlights, add Smythe to the group, and does anyone have anyone spring to mind as the H-Back that Kelly intimated? The only other one of the group could be Hounshell; wouldn't that be fun?
