Per Arrowryan on the '17 Master List:

David Adams is visiting July 31st. Per Scout, Notre Dame is one of his dream schools and his parents are pushing academics.

"I talk to Penn State and Pittsburgh a lot," he said. "I think it's just because they've always been there since the start of the season. I have the best relationship with them I would say.

"It's really good with Pitt," said Adams. "Coach Harley and me are developing a really good relationship. I just talked to him the other day. He wants all of us to stay home. They're calling it the "412 Crew.' It's awesome to think about that all of the hometown kids have a possibility of staying home.

"I would probably say the bond is extremely strong with Penn State because I talk to coach Smith probably once every two weeks and we have a great relationship," he said. "When I go up there I just spend a lot of time with coach Pry and coach Shoop. I really enjoy going up there."
rivals--also said he thinks stanford is close to offering

Yeah, a little Kuechly in his instincts, a little Joe Montana with his inner competitor and I think I detect some Arvydas Sabonis in his vision.

Kid shoots gaps hard/fast and wraps up. It's so crazy to me that kids these days are so developed. He's a freaking sophomore in those clips. ND seems to have some legit interest. Me likey.

Per BGI is sounds like the trip went really well. He spoke about the combination of academics and football being special. He left without an offer but it sounds like BVG and staff were able to make a strong impression without that. We told him he's at the top of the LB board we just want to continue to build a relationship prior to offer.

There's a saying about great minds... I just came here to ask if there was any news about his visit.

I wish ND did a workshop on their recruiting methodology. I'd really like to sit and go through a CBA pitting their slow approach vs. the more commonly used immediate shock & awe offer.

I don't so much care about not offering a 2017 LB or even this kid, though I would offer. However, what perplexes me is why we have a top of the board LB coming to campus and not getting an offer. How many top of the board LB's are there?

If we've learned one thing since spring is that we are saying one thing and doing another with defensive recruiting. I'd rather just be upfront and honest.

I'm a sales guy. I sold the best product in a space it invented. I recruited, trained and managed our salespeople. I see recruiting at ND to be the same thing. When I don't understand ND's sales tactics, it bothers me. I never walked into the top 3 company in its vertical and said... "I'm NDCrusader with XYZ.com. I'm thinking about taking you on as a client. Let's do lunch a few times, we'll follow each other on Twitter and let's see how your sales reports look next quarter. Until then, we'll keep in touch and who knows, maybe I'll try to close you down the road."

I know he's a 2017 kid but you have to match your competition's enthusiasm from the get and you have to do your due diligence quickly on Top 100 players.

Would you do the same if you had a finite amount of sales you were allowed?

Think of it this way. Most sales have a number allocated to them which gives the salesperson a certain amount of nut per sale. This number may vary depending on the metrics of the sale. How profitable it is, what time of the year and what product they bought.

As a banker, my sales cycle is probably more relevant to recruiting than widget/service sales. Since I can't just offer my services to anyone. The client has to qualify for my services and be eligible to do so. If I had a company come to me with a killer balance sheet, great profitability, etc... that is still only part of the process. At that point, I have to make sure that their industry is something we are allowed to pursue. I have to make sure the collateral is something acceptable to my bank. I have to make sure the transaction is mutually beneficial for ethical, moral and responsible banking. This is what Notre Dame recruiting seems like. Just because a kid is super talented, doesn't mean that we can blindly sell them a bill of goods based on that alone. They have to do their due diligence and make sure that the "sale" is one done in good faith.

Just my $0.02.

While I think there is some validity to this point as we only have 85 "sales" max. That becomes more relevant if you think: 1. The kid is going to commit on the spot or in the very near future making the "sale" final. 2. You don't currently think the prospect is good enough to take right now.

On 1. I don't get that is the case with David at all. Meaning we could give out an offer and still follow the recruitment without the risk of an imminent commitment.

On 2. We just told him he was a top of the board option. Meaning he's in rare company. What would make us not want and academic focused kid that is also top of the board material.

Essentially, with D recruiting some things don't match up. Thats the problem I have. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason for what they are doing. And what they are saying doesn't really seem to match what they're doing.
