I am wondering if he and his family are being scared off by how the Gunner Kiel saga played out. I would be curious as to what Indiana high school coaches think about Kelly's handling of players? He is facing a more favorable depth chart at ND than the Vols as they have two 4 star (Rivals) Freshman primed to run a spread offense in front of him. His main competition is Wimbush who will be a Junior by the time Johnson hits campus. It is an ideal situation for him. It would be huge let down to lose Indiana's top recruits to nearby schools..

I don't think BK handled the Kiel situation poorly unless I've forgotten something.

I completely understand people searching for logic as to why Hunter hasn't verbally committed to ND. But I feel like people are already prepping themselves for the let down by blaming staff or BK lol. Sometimes it has nothing to do with the staff getting out worked or handling things poorly.

There will be 3 ahead of him if he goes there. Jones, Jennings and Guarantano plus the '15's #8 ProQB Dormady. If he goes to play at UT he'll be playing for a coach who has CBK and RichRod for mentors. The Rich Rod part means more horizontal passing than CBK, who likes to throw it vertically much more than Rich Rod and his time at ND has been dominated by pro style QB's in TR and EG for proof.... Not Munchie Legaux.

But hey, if I'm #1 in the country I'd be thinking I'd win any QB battle that didn't involve Malik Zaire. Ain't nobody playing besides him until the games is in hand, he graduates of he gets hurt. (Wood was knocked while typing)

.

Great insight...thanks. Glad you knocked on wood while typing, lol. Can't lose Zaire...don''t even want to think about it.

In my days at UT games, I'd say UT is more vertical than anything. Could be wrong, but that what I remember.

UT's depth chart to me is easier for one reason.... I think there is greater likelihood that Jones would be much more likely to gamble on getting him into the mix early after Dobbs graduates (still not sold Dobbs is the answer, but he improved a lot last year). I think (just my opinion) BK will be much more conservative and will likely be cautious and lean towards Wimbush post MZ regardless of Hunter's skillset.

I agree, pretty much the only thing they could've done differently to this point is:
1. Offer earlier, which seems a bit silly to say considering he's a '17 recruit very far away from NSD.
2. Sell harder, which isn't really their style.

I also should say that I don't think getting "out worked" is necessarily a bad thing sometimes... in every battle there is going to be someone who "hustled" the hardest, and then everyone else who came up a little short of their bar. Nor is negative recruiting necessarily wrong/bad at all times... it means pointing out something "worse" about your competition, and it's only really a problem when schools make things up (like having to be Catholic to go to Notre Dame, having the "#1" program in something they don't and bagging on another school's program, etc.).

In a shocking turn of events Trevor Lawrence, the #1 QB in the 2018 class out of Georgia just announced first hair on ball and that UT was his leader......

Is anyone else really confused that NC State came out of nowhere to be a part of the situation now?

I agree and the staff is not to blame.....Sanford and BK spent time with his family with emphasis on his father. BK is a hard worker and sells recruits the right way. IMO, recruiting took a big hit with all the staff turnover and new coaches having to cultivate new relationships with recruits and high school coaches. A strong performance on the field will speak for itself. This could simply be a case of Johnson and his Dad waiting to see the type of offense Kelly/Sanford will run and how it performs against a pretty tough schedule.

Basically that Johnson could be a little worried that BK might not be around long term

Yes, the Tennessee pitch has been:
1. ND wants dual-threat QBs and you don't want to get hit.
2. ND coaches will be leaving before you're done in South Bend, but we promise to stay forever.

The answer to #1 is easy considering Kizer, Kiel, and Rees were all pocket passers... but our offense this year will have a ton of running and undermine that. To #2, our coaches response was literally that "no coach can promise to be around forever" which isn't exactly reassuring.

Joshua Dobbs is going to run just as much if not more than Zaire this year.

You are spot on about the response of bk. Man I will be bummed if he slips away from nd. It doesn't seem like the staff has other prime options at this point, no?

I think #2 is fair game. The rumors of past, and the fact it will likely happen at some point. BK either gets tired of stress, or gets an offer he can't refuse. Won't hate him for it either way. Jones on the other hand is getting a lot of love from UT right now (right or wrong). UT has made some big mistakes of late (Kiffy, Dooley), and want a long term guy. Jones has the $ to recruit, a relaxed academic environment, and huge fan base. Good job if you can get it. As long as he improves year over year, even if it's just 1 more win at a time, he'll have a long leash.

It will be close, but UT is really looking for him to improve as a pocket passer. UT has some outstanding WRs and TEs this year, and 2 5star RBs sharing the load. The pick up of Juco Kamara was huge IMO. Dobbs will definitely use his feet, but I don't think his feet will be near as happy as MZ's. just MHO

So if HJ has some chest, he'll say, alright coach I'm with you! So I'll go to ND and wait for Coach Kelly to leave like you said, then you of course come in and snatch his leftovers like you always do you coat tail ridin', rat soup eatin' mutha f........

But i digress.

I say this as a guy who's an alumni of UT, and who loved my time at UT: If you pick UT over ND right now for either football or scholastic reasons, you've been sold a load of horseshit and you bought it.
