I watched Irreversible recently. I saw it listed as one of the 10 greatest movies that were so disturbing you'd never watch them a second time. It lived up to that billing.

It's in French, but subtitled. The movie is shown in reverse order, starting with the final events of the day, then the events that led to that, then the events that preceded those, etc. Every time you think you finally have it all figured out, the next scenes show you what really happened before and changes your understanding of what's really going on.

It's actually a heck of a good movie and well worth watching, but there's a rape scene that's graphic and brutal to the nth degree... very disturbing.

I watched about the first 30 mins and fell asleep. Glad I didn't miss much.

After about 30 minutes, my wife asks if the movie is going anywhere , the went to the bedroom to watch TV. I had a $1.50 invested so I was sticking it out. lol

Copied from the Comic Book thread:

I thought Age of Ultron was absolutely fantastic. It faces a tough comparison to both The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy because those two films were unlike anything audiences had seen before, so in that regard it falls short of the very top tier of the MCU (which I reserve for Avengers, Guardians, and Winter Soldier). It's not going to surprise you. You know going in exactly what it's going to be like, and it executes on that promise very well.

Story - Probably the film's weakest point. There were parts where it felt like it was jumping from one battle to the next without much narrative flow in between, but such is the nature of the genre at times.

Humor - Spot on. Appropriate timing. Several laugh-out-loud moments.

Characters - For me, this was the movie's strongest point. Going back in my head, Cap, Stark, Thor, Banner, Widow, and Hawkeye all felt well explored and well developed. It's a real skill to be able to balance six "equal" heroes in one movie without each one feeling shallow, but they pulled it off somehow. Ultron was my favorite MCU villain so far and it's not really close (sorry, Loki). Loads of cameos and minor roles from Fury, Hill, Falcon, and Rhodey helped fill out the universe. The Vision shows up late for narrative purposes but he's freaking badass. He even does the phase punch that he's done in the comics on numerous occasions. The only slightly underdeveloped characters are the Maximoff twins, who are treated as a package deal ("the twins") for most of the film and not as individuals in their own right.

Place in the MCU - A common thing I've seen in negative reviews of AOU is that it spends too much time setting up Phase 3 of the MCU. I disagree. If you like the world building and interconnected nature of the MCU, you'll love those bits. If you're looking to hate it, you'll certainly find something to hate. But if you just don't care one way or the other, I don't think the world-building story lines will either help or hinder your enjoyment of the movie for its own sake.

ETA: I did notice some slight inconsistency in the CGI. There were times when Hulk looked absolutely life-like and other times when even Captain America felt cartoonish. There was also a bit of what I call the "Alice in Wonderland" effect where a felt like I was supposed to be watching in 3D and was missing something for not doing so.

If you haven't heard, there's a mid-credits scene but no post-credits scene, so don't bother sitting through all of them.

The wife and I watched this for the first time last week. I was disappointed. It was one of those uniquely 60s type movies that couldn't quite decide what it wanted to be. Light-hearted romantic romp? Tense mystery thriller? It veered back and forth awkwardly, like it had 2 different directors. And what was with that weird shower scene with Cary Grant? It was entertaining and charming in places, and the actors did good work, but it was just too choppy and uneven for me to give it high marks.

"The Wild Geese." One of those, you-couldn't-make-that-today type movies. Entertaining War/Action/Adventure movie with Richard Burton, Richard Harris, and Roger Moore turning in good performances. The movie is involving, even though stuff doesn't start blowing up real good until about an hour in. It was pretty controversial in its day, with the with regard to race relations and how the West deals with Africa. The theme song is absolutely terrible though. But hey, that was the 70s.

The plot wasn't unique but the format of a team-up movie that had been built to by essentially five prequels was absolutely a first.

The Avengers. Typical popcorn movie. Before that, Ex Machina. That movie bothered me like most horror movies because the victims (the humans) kept making stupid decisions and putting themselves in harms way.

I agree that the end was the typical quirky romantic part, but I didn't get that from the rest of the movie.

Took my girls to go see Cinderella... Honestly, I really liked it, would totally recommend it for those with young girls or those into fantasy...

Took my 5 year old girl couple weeks back. Just us two and we had a blast. Got goosebumps when she showed up to the ball. Will be buying this for her when it hits dvd.

I owed my fiance a movie pick, so we saw "The Age of Adaline."

Actually bearable, as far as chick-flicks go. Some cool sci-fi moments, decent humor. Plus, there are worse things than looking at Blake Lively for two hours.

Anybody else get dragged out to see it?

25th anniversary of "Goodfellas." I'm starting to come around to the argument that it is Scorcese's best, rather then just dubbing it one of his best. It's such a complete movie, greater than the sum of its parts. It's just so damn good with top-notch performances, dialogue, visuals, music. Scorcese takes all of his talents: knack for dialogue, use of music, rapid change of pace and puts them on a much grander stage, and succeeds wildly. Scorcese makes an epic film, not with overwrought grandiosity, but by focusing on vivid, intimate moments and really making them come alive.

ah the Boxer, what a flick. Barry McGuigan trained DDL for the boxing scenes and he reckons DDL could have boxed at a pro level he was that good

Which makes me wonder what DDL really is. AA's to role ratio? Ever not been great at anything?

Have to watch what the wife wants on Mothers Day. We watched two actually. Surprisingly she picked DRAFT DAY for one of the selections.
I must say it was pretty good. Very entertaining. Second, definitely a "chick flick" but again very entertaining, Hector and the Pursuit of Happiness.
It was very well written, Toni Collette had a small role but as usual was excellent, and the music was superb.

loved barry mcguigan...big fan...such a shame they had him fight in that 105degree+ heat/humidity vs Cruz. remember it like yesterday. somewhere in the attic I think I still have the fight poster for that one.
an amazing life (still), he straddled "the troubles" of the era to perfection...shame his manager took so much of his money.

yeah hes a living legend, he is still involved with boxing as a manager (his son barry jr is a trainer) and he works for Sky Sports in the UK covering fights. One of the few athletes that was equally revered in the UK and Ireland at a time (the 80's) when things werent always so rosy

He current protege is Carl Frampton, current IBF World Super Bantamweight champion Carl Frampton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Watched "Walk of Shame" with Elizabeth Banks. Pretty good for a romantic comedy and I enjoyed looking at her for 90 minutes.

For any of you who appreciate brilliance, and can enjoy a documentary, "Jimi Hendrix - Hear My Train A Comin'", is a real eyeopener.

Made just a couple of years ago, it is more than another tribute to Hendrix. It is a really complete picture of the History of Rock and Roll, from the beginning, (Rocket '"88:), credited to Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, actually Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm. It continued on with the icons and really showed the dynamics of London in the mid to late '60's. Too much to describe, it is the kind of movie that every interview and film clip is golden.

I could watch it over and over . . .
