Jameis Winston of Florida State Seminoles says crab legs were given to him, not stolen

Former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, who is projected to be the first overall selection in the NFL draft, said during an appearance on ESPN's Draft Academy that he never stole crab legs last year and that they instead were given to him by a grocery store employee.

The former Heisman Trophy winner was issued a civil citation for shoplifting on April 29, 2014, after he walked out of a Tallahassee, Florida, supermarket without paying for $32 worth of crab legs and crawfish.

"How I'm supposed to handle, like, if I just got them for free? I just say, 'I just messed up?'" Winston asked Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh during ESPN's Draft Academy, which aired Tuesday night but was taped before the NFL scouting combine in February.

When asked by Harbaugh to elaborate on the incident, Winston said it wasn't the first time he had gotten free food from an individual working at that store.

"Well, a week before, it was my buddy's birthday and we had got a cake. And we met a dude that worked inside Publix and he said, 'Hey, anytime you come in here, I got you.' So that day we just walked out and he hooked us up with that," Winston said.

"And when I came in to get crab legs, I did the same thing and he just gave them to me and I walked out. And someone from inside the store had told the security that I didn't pay for them. And that's how the whole thing started."

I honestly dont doubt that a employee of the store was a huge FSU fan and was hooking them up. BUT, it is still stealing and illegal and he knew that.

This is worst case for FSU. He knowingly took impermissible benefits, which is an NCAA violation, unlike stealing. Too late to do anything about it now, but it's shocking that FSU compliance didn't report this as a violation to the NCAA with Fischer acknowledging that they knew about it and determined it was an "isolated incident"... still a violation that you have to report.

For those that missed the ESPN skit:

Harbaugh and his assistant were talking to Jameis and doing a mock-interview like he'd have to do at the combine. They asked him if he had ever been in trouble at school or had any run-in with the law and had any discipline because of his actions. Well Jameis told a story about how he laughed at his high school coach because he was crying after a game (which got him suspended one game) and the story about him standing on the tables at FSU. Totally evaded the rape and the crab legs story. Harbaugh's assistant then tells him that he needs to tell the scouts/coaches about the crab legs story during the interview and not to leave anything out. Harbaugh then acts like he has no idea about the crab legs story saying "Snow Crabs?!?"

FSU TO WORK WITH NCAA REGARDING WINSTON
"We have become aware of statements made by Jameis Winston during a recent interview with Jim Harbaugh describing the circumstances of his alleged receipt of food from a local grocery store. The details disclosed by Winston in that interview were not previously known to the University."

Such BS!!! They were perfectly fine doing nothing when the knew he stole something, but now that the season is over and their Heisman QB has moved on, they are acting as if this "good kid" pulled the wool over their eyes. I'm sure they will be happy to take the slap on the wrist from the NCAA for finally seeing what everyone else in the country saw right away. And, they still got to play in the first playoff in major college football history. If they are dumb enough to get dooped by that idiot, they are stupider than I thought. But of course, they knew all along what was going on and chose to push it into the off season. FSU has absolutely no credibility. Screw that whole program.

The funniest thing is that hours earlier Fisher had said that FSU compliance knew about it and determined it was an isolated incident.

LOL, i saw a quote somewhere that Jimbo said "if thats what Jameis said, then thats the truth."

I was really hoping to find an article with quotes of his after the initial incident but have only been able to turn up quotes from his baseball coach.

If he got the shit for free on a hook up as opposed to steeling it, it's less of a big deal. Who hasn't, at some point in their life, had a buddy work at a restaurant, or somewhere similar, and hook you up with free food.

Agreed... for a normal person. If there is a store giving FSU players free stuff that's actually a huge violation though.

True. I was referring to one guy with a buddy at the store. Problem with this situation is it involves Winston. Not a single person around him pushes him for honesty. There are so many different versions of every situation he's involved in.

Well I am glad to learn that JW didn't steal those things! Somebody else did and they gave them to him. Wheeeeee, here I thought he did something wrong!
Boy, was I wrong about his character.
Bad me.

Not going to lie, I was hoping the Bears would somehow get Winston. It's pretty clear that the kid doesn't get it. He's had multiple opportunities to fess up on minor stuff (like the crab legs), and he just won't.

No way he's going to get it by the time his first contract is up. He'll get it eventually, but it will be too late for his NFL career.

Didn't his lawyer recently say that he wasn't ready off the field? If he hasn't gotten it yet, with all of the 'situations' that were nothing, he never will.

I'm all for discussing the merits of stealing vs a hookup, but hasn't anyone else noticed that Jameis Winston doesn't know how to speak?

Ah, I just saw the headline and didn't read more.

Obviously, there is always the exception to the rule (A. Luck, etc.) but I think in all most rookies arent prepared for life outside of football once they leave college. Jameis most certainly isnt and his lawyer said so.

One NFL general manager was asked his thoughts on the contention by Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher that Jameis Winston’s crab leg escapade was an isolated incident. His response was anger. Almost rage. Not at Winston but at Fisher. Let me explain.

Winston told Jim Harbaugh on ESPN's draft show that he didn’t steal the crab legs, but that they were part of an arrangement with a store employee that would provide Winston with free food from the store.

“Well, a week before it was my buddy’s birthday and we had got a cake and we met a dude that worked inside Publix and he said, ‘Hey, anytime you come in here, I got you.’” Winston said. “So that day we just walked out and he hooked us up with that.

“And when I went in to get crab legs, did the same thing and he just gave them to me and I walked out. Someone from inside the store had told the security that I didn’t pay for them, and that’s how the whole thing started.”

Bruce Feldman of Fox reported that Fisher says the school’s compliance department investigated the matter and found that what happened was an isolated incident.

I asked an NFL general manager about it and he offered this scathing rebuke of Fisher.

“Our investigators found several Publix employees who corroborated what Winston said. Winston told this story to our team and I believe others. We were able to determine that he was telling the truth. I won’t get into more detail than that.

“Should Winston have taken free food? No, of course not. But college football stars, at every campus in America, get free stuff. They all do. Every single one.

“We feel like Winston was wrong but he’s part of an overall college system where this happens daily. My personal opinion is that on this issue, and this issue alone, he was hung out to dry.”

Meaning, it was easier to portray Winston as a thief, than to face scrutiny from the NCAA.

Two things are clear here. First, as the general manager said, almost every athlete, in every big-time program, gets perks. That's just common sense. It is far more likely that Winston is telling the truth, and far less likely that he was alone doing it, and only did it that once.

Second, NFL investigators can find out anything.

1. it isnt isolated if its happened twice.

2. of course Jimbo is going to cover his and his teams ass (future) before 1 player.

meh...I'd have opted to have the kid tell the truth. It was a kid hooking him up, not some wealthy Alum. NCAA would have probably wagged a finger at him...if they even did anything.

The other thing...he is still a thief. Look, if you know you are receiving goods that aren't being paid for, you know you are a thief...yup, just that simple. No room for grey here. Unless the guy giving him permission was the Store manager, and I assume thats not the case, Jameis Winston knew the store wasn't getting paid for what he took. Done. Not inclined to be so red-assed as the NFL GMs about the whole thief vs NCAA rules violator...NFL GMs are just as ridiculous as Fisher...

Would like to load the lot of them on a tour boat to the Kwajalein Islands on Ballistic Missile test day...they all suck air from decent human beings.

I literally just saw this tweet. So i would assume that Bowden must really dislike Jimbo aswell... Or is Bowden just aware of how much an ass wagon Jimbo is?

I always liked Bobby Bowden. I'm sure he had his fair share of issues...but I liked him.
