I never watched any of those games. Only NC I ever watched was 1988, and it was a re run obviously.

I'm no ND historian, and will never pretend to be so. Just a fan from birth and will be for my entire life.

So I guess you have never heard of Babe Ruth, Jerry Lucas, or Joe Namath?

Just stop. I'm a die hard Irish fan. I've spent thousands of dollars travelin to their games. I have one tattoo and will never get another, no matter who dies in my family. The tattoo is of NDs leprechaun.

I spend my free time with family, friends, traveling, watching current football, and talking Irish football on IE. I don't have much interest in history, but more of where we're headed.

I'm sorry that bothers you, but if you're trying to convince me and others that I'm not a die hard ND fan, you're simply wrong. I'll try to read some Wikipedia if I find some free time though. I truly will.

Can we move on?

I literally made a post saying that I was moving on a couple back, so why are you making a post like this one? Sure doesn't seem like you want to move on.

Do yourself a favor. With the thousands of bucks you pay for games, save $10 and buy a book on the history of the team.

Lol, sorry I missed it, I haven't read all of your posts to be honest.

And I honestly will read up sometime after christmas

Glad we're coming down, we can all fight at halftime of nd/Stanford :).

It's not really a big deal, but it's hard to imagine anybody who post around here everyday not knowing who Terry Hanratty is. Anyways, carry on.

Are we the only elitist fan base that bashes others for not knowing a player from almost fifty fucking years ago? No wonder people think ND fans are arrogant.

I'm a die hard fan of Shimano fishing reels but I can't tell you what the first one was, how many different reels there are, and how much line fits on each one.

That's why ND football is a bigger brand than Shimano fishing reels.

It doesn't matter if they were alive. If they claim to be die hard fans of the team, how have you never ran across the name of a guy that was the QB of one of the finest teams to ever play here? They won one of our titles and Hanratty went on to win two Super Bowls and is in the hall of fame. Pick up a book for Christ sakes.

I also don't believe that its common for die hard fans to not know him. They might not be able to pick out an elderly version of him out of a crowd at a bar, but I guarantee you that lifelong ND fans that care enough to actually know our history/ culture, know the name of our royalty. Hanratty is on the Mt Rushmore of ND players.

I follow this board quite often and do not always agree with you, but in this case you summed up my thoughts exactly. I began my ND fandom as a 10 year old in 1987 and by the time I was 16-17 knew who Terry Hanratty was as a player. So much history here and the most rabid fans don't know one of our greatest players. I probably couldn't recognize him today but I surely know what he did for the Irish as a player. One of my favorite parts about being a fan of ND is the rich history. I am not trying to shame anybody for not knowing just trying to show that it has enriched my enjoyment as a fan.

At the very least Terry Hanratty is the last consensus All American QB at Notre Dame (1968). That is reason enough to know who the guy is. If you are truly a fan this is probably something you should know.

Why is the last All American so significant. Can you name the first without looking it up? What about the second? There were 10 altogether ... can you name them all? If not, does that mean you are a horrible fan? I don't think so, but you can decide for yourself.

Hanratty went on to win two Super Bowls and is in the hall of fame.

While I agree that serious fans should know who Hanratty is; let's not get carried away. Hanratty sat the bench while Terry Bradshaw quarterbacked the Steelers to two Super Bowl wins. And I don't think he is in the College Football Hall of Fame. At least, I can find no list with him on it.

Let's not get off on a tangent here. I consider myself fairly well versed in ND history, and(knowing that Hanratty was the last) I doubt that I could name even half of the 10. But I bet that I would recognize each one of their names, if you said them. And THAT was the point; that any serious fan should have recognized the name Terry Hanratty, and not had to ask who he was.

Don't believe anyone ever asked who he was directly. His name was never mentioned prior.

This is like reading my ND fandom biography. National Champs in my 2nd year as a fan. Damn, I thought I'd have seen a half a dozen by now. Seriously though, I enjoyed reading the history and learning about the culture at ND. A good book is Talking Irish by Steve Delsohn.

That's a fair point, but if you didn't recognize all 10, would that make you less of a fan? That's the point I'm trying to make. It isn't up to any of us to set the boundries of what it means to be a fan. Some fans are more into history than others, and some just like the game-time atmosphere. Some are fans just because their dads were fans and it is something that they can always have with him. There are a million reasons why someone might be a fan, and there are probably as many ways as it manifests itself in their actions. I'll bet half of the posters on here couldn't name the Congressman from their district, but we are not questioning their patriotism. There were a couple of younger posters who didn't know a player from nearly 50 years ago, and they were made to look like non-fans. I find that a little wierd. I have no idea that these guys are rabid fans. Instead of just answering the question of who Hanratty is and helping to impart our knowledge of the team to them, some posters attacked them. That doesn't seem to me to be in line with the very reasons why they claim to love ND so much.

I can't even name both U.S. senators from NY

Very well said. I respect and enjoy the vast history Notre Dame has and its one of the reasons I am a fan, but forgive me for not knowing a player who played here when my mom was a toddler. Being a historian isn't a criteria of what I consider a fan. Following, supporting and watching games when the team is good or bad are pretty much my only criteria.

I've been an ND fan since the mid-60s. If asked, I wouldn't be able to tell who has been on the roster in the past 30+ years. I don't think anyone has that good of a memory. Does this make me any less of a fan? No.

It just means I have a very bad case of CRS.

kmoose, I see your point. I'm surprised he didn't know, but that doesn't mean he's not a true fan IMHO. But I get what you're saying...we just disagree. No worries.

My problem, and I think goirish41's problem with it, is that he was called 'pathetic' by a poster. Was that necessary? And then that same poster, when called out on it, still says it's 'shameful'. Kuenjha could've easily lied, looked it up on google, and made it seem like he knew all about him. Instead, he was honest about it. IMHO, there shouldn't have been an attempt made to humiliate him, regardless of his past. Bust his balls a bit? Sure lol. But this wasn't what happened. That was many of our problems with it.

I just kind of wonder when I needed to have learned of Terry Hanratty and by what method and for what reason.

I know who he is, but that's because his son is here now and that has led to it being reported on recently. I can't say that I would know otherwise and I don't think it makes me less of a fan that I didn't know until I was in my 20s. I'm not sure I'm more of a fan now that I know.

For what it's worth, any fan on this board has seen Rudy. For that reason, at a minimum they should know these 10 references from ND history:

The Four Horsemen.

Knute Rockne.

Moose Krause.

Angelo Bartelli.

Johnny Lujack.

Leon Hart, Terry Hanratty, Jack Snow.

John Lattner.

Paul Hornung could have dressed in this locker.

Any way one of the board elders could schedule a time for an open forum history lesson? So us lesser fans can learn what we are ignorant on, and become 'die hard' enough for the rest?
