Huge.
That is the word to describe this weekend for Liam Eichenberg. The 6-foot-5, 280-pound 2016 offensive lineman from Ohio is not only big in size, but this visit could be the deciding factor in his recruitment. Irish Sports Daily caught up with St. Ignatius head coach Chuck Kyle this week and discussed the recruitment of his star player.
“At this stage, I think it has come down to Notre Dame and Ohio State,” explained Kyle. “From having conversations with him, he wants to take a look at both teams in action with spring ball going on. He will come home, think it through and I think he is very close to making a decision. He is getting close to wrapping it all up.”
After visiting Notre Dame this weekend, Eichenberg will visit Ohio State next weekend and then have a decision relatively soon after. Kyle has had many conversations with the four-star recruit, but doesn’t know what will be the turning point of the recruitment.
“I think he knows pretty much all he needs to know about both programs,” Kyle said. “You have two great programs and he can get a good education at both. I wish I could tell you the tipping factor. I honestly don’t know. I think he is going to go to both schools and get a feel of how well he fits in.
“I think it has come to where is he comfortable. You talk to these kids and they understand coaching staffs come and go. Don’t get me wrong, both coaches are very well-established (Added hyphen), but the assistants can leave. That’s the way the world of college football is these days. He is making sure he is making the right decision.”
St. Ignatius is known for its academics and football, so it comes as no shock the Wildcats are represented at Notre Dame and Ohio State. The Buckeyes have 2015 defensive end Dre’Mont Jones set to arrive in June and the Irish have freshman offensive lineman Jimmy Byrne on the roster.
“He will want to see how things work in the spring and probably talk to a professor or two,” stated Kyle. “Things like that, you need to do in this process. He is good friends with Dre’Mont Jones and Jimmy is a good friend of his, but I don’t know if that will tip it one way or another.”
