Chauncey Gardner, ATH, 5-11, 170, Cocoa High School, Cocoa FL recently received a scholarship offer from Notre Dame. Gardner has learned a few things about the Irish from a CHS alum that currently starts for Notre Dame, Tarean Folston.
“I played with him my freshman year in high school,” he said. “To me they’ve got that heart. They’ve got a lot of fight in them. I haven’t talked to him lately because we’ve both been busy, but when he comes down I talked to him about it. He said it’s a great atmosphere and it’s a great place to be if you think about football and all of the other stuff.”
Recruiting restrictions prevent the Irish coaches from directly contacting Gardner but he has managed to have some communication through Twitter.
“They ask me where Notre Dame stands,” he shared. “I just told them the top three really.”
Gardner previously committed to Miami before switching his pledge to Florida. However, the resignation (firing?) of Wil Muschamp has obviously created questions in his mind about the Gators.
“I’m committed to a school, not a coach, but who knows,” he said. “It’s an early commitment. Yeah I’m positive but if things were to get worse than they are, I told my dad I would just decommit and chill out and wait until senior year and signing day when it really matters.”
Notre Dame isn’t the only school that has been coming hard after the Florida standout.
“I’ve been getting a lot of interest from Florida State, Louisville and Tennessee along with most of the SEC schools,” he said. “I really haven’t been checking because I’ve just been trying to win state.”
In the short term, Gardner is clearly focused on his own season, but he hasn’t forgotten the long term importance of his college decision. Based on that he would definitely like to make it to South Bend at some point.
“It’ll probably be my senior year because this year is winding down and I think it’s too late,” he explained. “I’m just going to wait until next year.”
Gardner has a very specific set of things that he’ll be looking at when he visits the Irish.
“I want to check out the fan loyalty, atmosphere of the stadium, preparation and school and campus and stuff like that,” he said.
Gardner excels on both sides of the ball but most schools prefer him on the defensive side because college coaches like “my defensive swagger and my physicality.”
Gardner’s athleticism and big play ability has attracted the Notre Dame coaching staff but farther north the Irish coaches are recruiting a player that not only has big play ability but actually wears that as part of his nickname.
