See him basically doing what Cage did for this year. Situational Run-Stuffer. Atleast he's a big body.

Hopefully Cage and Mokwuah can fill that role after Jones for a while, so that Tiassum has plenty of time to gain strength before being used.

I think Taylor has the lowest ceiling of the 3 (4 with Tillery) DL, but I think he is most ready to see the field (besides possibly Jerry). If we need an extra DT this year, I hope it's him first and that MDT and Tiassum redshirt.

Curious what you think of MDT. Really like his frame. Having 6'5" MDT and 6'6" Tillery next to each other has the potential to be a pretty big and athletic combo.

I honestly was thinking he had a similar trajectory as Tiassum when we first got him. But his senior year film was WAYYYY better than his junior year - showed much more explosion and athleticism than I thought he had. He already uses his hands pretty well too.

I really like MDT now. I completely agree with you that him and Tillery could be absolutely monsters on the DL for us. I still want to see MDT redshirt and have a year in the program before he sees the field, but I am much more optimistic about him being a quality player on the DL for us now than before, and much sooner as well. Kudos for the staff for going after him and getting him early, trusting their evaluation and projection.

Yup he's exactly the kind of kid MSU lives off of. Tilllery should be able to redshirt too with Day, Jones, Hayes, Cage, Mokwuah, and potentially Rochell. I don't think the staff would want to redshirt 4 DTs due to having 4 DTs graduating the same year could cause issues in the future. If I had to bet id think Tillery and Taylor get PT.

I agree completely with everything here. When was the last time we were this loaded at DT? Now if only we could get elite pass rushers....

I think Trumbetti is our best bet for a pass rusher

I think it's Williams once he fills out a bit. Kid got big in a hurry, and he was a high jump and field (can't remember if it was shotput or discuss) champion so you know he has fast twitch explosion. Plus, he's extremely long so he can get his hands on the QB.

The more I look at it the more I think our DL is in good shape for the forseable future. One or two of Williams, Trumbetti, Wallace or Blankenship turning into elite players will be the difference between being solid and great there.

Don't want to sound negative because I think there are some kids that are very underrated in this class (Nicco & CJ the most notable) but I just don't see it with this kid.

Yeah, of the 4 guys we got on the DL, he's got the lowest floor and probably the 2nd lowest ceiling. I think he could be a very solid depth guy, but I just don't see him becoming an elite DT for us.

As for pass rush, I think Trumbetti is going to make the jump into the elite pass rusher category in 2015. He didn't have a very statistically eventful 2014, but I heard several experts rave about this guy when he was out there. He's active, athletic and quick off the ball. Jhonny needs to see the field as well. His pass rushing skills are unknown, but his athleticism and explosiveness is utterly insane.

He will be more productive than Tyler Stockton, and has a much higher ceiling than Utupo, Heggie, Carrico, Hounshell and Matuska. I liked Hounshell and Matuska because I thought there floor was a lot higher and I was certain they would provide at bare minimum good quality depth after a year or two (shame Hounshell's career got derailed), but honestly if Tiassum puts in hard work and develops he will be better than all of them.

Hounshell probably could have been a starter if not for the injuries. And I love me some Matuska.

Yeah I have faith Matuska can provide quality depth in the coming years. He's got 3 years left. It'd be a indictment on Elston's ability to develop players if he can't turn someone with Matusk's size and decent athleticsm into a productive player IMO.

I'm not saying Matuska won't be productive - he was for use down the stretch and should just keep getting better. Hounshell could have been productive too had he stayed healthy. My only point was that IMO Tiassum has a higher upside if he develops. Those two do have higher floors, though.

I wasn't accusing you of that Ironman. I just love how violent and nasty Matuska plays.

Re: our DLine. Sheldon Day is elite and every analyst you listen to either says it flat or intimates it. I saw an elite or near elite Jarron Jones vs. FSU and around that time of the season; then apparently injuries set in. With Cage and Rochelle and Hayes and Matuska and Mokwuah, we are loaded at DT. Hopefully none of the rooks will need to use up a year.

At DE, when defensing the run we are also in superb shape. Trumbetti and Okwara are going to make it rough on Ishaq to get bulk reps. And there are plenty of others that want some of that DE action. The "other" Williams might have a lot to say about it, plus Bonner, Hill, Blankenship, and we don't yet know if Rochelle will go back there.

This team is nearly FOUR deep at the DLine positions without the rooks. I am really not worried about either of our lines. As to the pass rush, if we stop the run then they should be forced to get into thirds and long. That's when I, if I'm BVG, blitz JSmith, Farley, Tranquill, or one of the corners. --- someone with speed. ... or two of them. The DLine might be able to pass-rush-by-committee if Jarron is healthy and "bullish". Sheldon demands double teams; Romeo got there 4-5 times last year; Trumbetti has moments when he just suddenly is on top of the QB or the RB --- that should happen more. I have a lot more to sweat on this 2015 version of ND than the DLine.

Reviewing the Redshirts: DT Brandon Tiassum - One Foot Down

It's going to be very hard for Tiassum to make an impact in 2016. I don't think there's any way to sugar coat that fact. Job number one since he's arrived on campus has been to form his body into something that the staff can work with to get him into contention for some playing time. As late as the bowl practices leading up to the trip to Arizona the belief was that Tiassum still needs quality time in the Irish strength & conditioning program.

How long it'll take Tiassum to get to that point is anybody's guess. If he were to make tremendous gains in the weight room there's still a plethora of other bodies to contend with on the interior. He's also likely a candidate at nose guard where Jarron Jones and Daniel Cage currently reside. Even with a huge spring it's unlikely there will be any two-deep reps available for the fall.

There's not much else to say, really. Tiassum was seen by most as a long-term project and he's still in the beginning of his young career. We'll need another 12 to 15 months to really understand his role on the defense and within the program.
