Kelly hasn't whiffed on many recruits since he got here. He deserves the benefit of the doubt IMO. Most of issues have been QB play and depth obviously. He's been able to get contributions out of a very, very high percentage of kids who he's brought in here.

And in case anyone hasn't noticed, we don't exactly have many 4 and 5 stars knocking on the door and we're literally never ever at 85 schollies.

Local kid from an area we have had great success and plays a position where we're desperate for depth. How is anyone complaining?

It basically started when I informed a couple of uninformed posters that his competition and the conference he plays in is one of the best in the country. For the most part I think the vast majority are happy with this pickup. Simply because the staff didn't target him earlier and that he's a late pickup doesn't mean he won't be good.

Love seeing Warren kids get big offers. We have two coming down the pike in a few years (8th graders now, one may focus on bball) that will garner some attention too. Get that pipeline set Irish.

Spoke to a buddy of mine, who's uncle is close to the football scene and a lot of the coaches in Indy. Basically he said this kid is nothing short of a first class kid. Might not translate into a superstar on the college level, but will definitely be a contributor and give everything he has to make the team better.

OFD's Jamie Uyeyama just published a (very cursory) film breakdown of Williams'.

What's up with this?

Yes, Notre Dame needs to sign some safeties and the Irish coaching staff recognized this awhile ago and has been trying to add to the two safeties, Prentice McKinney and Nico Fertitta, that have been committed to the Irish for some time with several offers. Unfortunately, none of them seemed like anything close to a certainty to sign with ND in February. Now that McKinney sounds like he is far from a certainty as well, the need has become even greater.

Is that bad wording, or is the author saying that Nicco is also not a certainty to sign with us? I haven't been closely following the site lately, but I wasn't aware of wavering from Nicco.

I haven't watched film on Mykelti, but I'm happy we could bring in a solid safety in this class. His rankings tell me he is good, not great, but that is what I love about him. He clearly loves Notre Dame, and wants to make an impact. He will play hard for us.

What makes me so happy about him coming, is he seems to be the kind of player we overlooked for a few years going after those 5 star guys. We slow play a kid who wants to come to Notre Dame, and string him along, all while hoping "Mr. All Everything" 5 star that everyone caters to chooses ND. Finally the 5 star, after stringing Notre Dame along, chooses another school right before NSD (or on it), and ND scrambles trying to get a kid like Mykelti to sign.... Too late, he went with a team that truly wanted him in the beginning.

We need players like him.

I think it's bad wording, and he's trying to say that none of the first-tier safety prospects we're recruiting are likely to commit to ND.

We need safeties with instinctive football IQs. If Mykelti is that kind of guy, he's worth more than Shumate or Redfield types right now. I prefer some slightly less athletic guy appearing in the correct defensive fit and tackling somebody, than watching a Rolls-Royce gazelle "beautifully" chasing an opposing receiver towards the endzone. Hopefully Max and Elijah will become both, but they aren't yet.

I would prefer a coach that could teach an athletic safety like Redfield or Shumate how to play the safety position well...

Respectfully disagree, OMM. There is no safety, either on the roster or currently committed, that is worth more than Redfield.

Toughness can be instilled, instincts can be improved through experience and proper tackling can be taught through repetition. The same cannot be said about elite athleticism. Max has it and nobody else does. It can't be gained through experience and it can't be taught. We need Max's athleticism to compete against the best next year. An average athlete with a high football IQ simply isn't enough.

but neither is an athletic safety chasing someone into the endzone because of a missed assignment which is the same thing that OMM stated...either way they both suck to see them happen

Yes, but I don't think it's fair to describe Max as merely an athlete trying to play ball. He has the IQ, instincts and ability, in my opinion.

Per Tom Loy, apparently Ohio State is starting to coming after Mykelti late. Technically no offer yet, but he would have one if he were to show interest / visit. Loy says Mykelti is solid though and will sign with ND Wednesday.

So Wiltfong says OSU actually did offer. Probably would be going there if they did in the fall. He's going to ND though.
