3/4 of the LBs on SI's 2nd team have been named Lott Impact Player of the Week twice. None of the LBs named to the 1st team has earned such a distinction even once.

Interesting... I thought only ESPN hated Notre Dame. I guess SI must, too.

Jaylon has been amazing, and I love his game. BUT let's all remember that he is a true Soph and has missed his share of tackles too. He will continue to improve and probably be borderline 1st team by year end. 2nd team is something to be incredibly proud of either way.

Agree...he has been amazing. Needs to have a few game-changing "moments" like Teo did and he'll get his recognition. Oh...and miss zero tackles in the FSU game.

Lead the team in tackles with 11 against UL. Also had a TFL, PBU, and 2 QBH's.

Second week in a row with double digit tackles.

First time this season an ND player had back to back double digit tackle games.

seems to have struggled in space more the past few weeks, however, hesitating too much imo.

I would love to understand his assignments more because there were more than a few times it appears he got burned in the running game. I would like to know if that is the case or not.

My view of Jaylon is that we're getting about as much out of him as we can expect from a guy playing a relatively new role [and who is without his MLB "brother"].

I'm also getting the impression [easily wrong] that opponents are targeting away from him if they can. Morgan seems [ineffectively] to be the guy getting vaguely to the point-of-attack with Jaylon showing up later and Onwualu never [Farley is a bit better at arriving on the scene.]

I believe that it would be very hard for Jaylon to play like an All-American given the situation with his fellow linebackers. The only thing that I wish he'd dump is his celebration even when we're getting creamed.

Spontaneity is one thing, choreography another.

Victor or vanquished, humility is appropriate.

"Creamed" or "uncreamed" is irrelevant.

Did you see the Raider sack dance that almost cost them the game on Thursday. That was one for the record books. Haha.

Jaylon's a stud he's just had to do so much more to recover for Morgan. Again if Grace and Schmidt were healthy.... but that's football.

Mentioned by Bruce Feldman as a Heisman darkhorse. Feldman had some nice praise for the team in relation to Jaylon's description.

Mailbag: Four true darkhorses who could win Heisman in 2015 & more | FOX Sports

3) Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith. I know defensive guys, realistically, can essentially only hope to get invited to NYC not to actually win it, but since we're talking darkhorses we'll mention Smith. The Irish should have their most talented team in a generation, and Smith is their best player. A few years ago Manti Te'o came in second for the Heisman and Smith (112 tackles, nine TFLs) is better than Te'o.

Jaylon is currently a first round pick in both Kiper and McShay's 2016 mock draft / big board. Is there much indication that he'll be leaving early? It hasn't occurred to me.

to me,

graduation in 3 years + 1st round draft forecast = 98% gone after 3 years

non-graduation (at ND) + 1st round draft forecast = 90% gone after 3 years.

non-graduation (any school) + 1st round draft forecast =99.9% gone after 3 years

anyone know if he is on track to graduate?

Well he didn't redshirt so it's not just an eligibility thing. He's a true junior so he'd have to be way ahead to graduate.

Jaylon strikes me as the kind that wants his degree. If he doesn't graduate early I expect him to be back in 2016. Probably a little wishful thinking involved but that's where I stand.

If he is on the 3 year graduation plan then I think he's gone after this year barring injury or some unforeseen circumstance.

I think he goes either way with a first round grade. I also think he gets his degree at some point either way. I hope for the best for him and his family, and will be pleasantly surprised if I'm watching him play for the Irish as a senior. Would love McShay's mock to come true and have him be a Chief when he does go pro.
