Wait a second, St. Peter's Prep QB and Notre Dame commit Brandon Wimbush did what? - NJ.com

By Braulio Perez | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
on November 24, 2014 11:20 a.m.

...

During St. Peter's Prep's 31-14 victory over Bergen Catholic on Saturday night, quarterback Brandon Wimbush had a first half to forget, throwing one touchdown, but three interceptions. The second half, though, was a completely different story. The future Notre Dame signal caller threw three touchdowns, all to Minkah Fitzpatrick, but none were bigger than his final strike of the night.

On that play, with the score 23-14 Marauders, St. Peter's Prep had the rock at their own 36-yard line. Wimbush dropped back, looked downfield and fired off a deep ball to Fitzpatrick. Now, this wasn't an ordinary throw. The 6-2, 220-pounder released the ball from the 31-yard line and Fitzpatrick caught it at the five, before jogging into the end zone.

The ball traveled 64-yards in the air and is being debated as the longest throw in high school history.

...

On the night, Wimbush finished with 430 passing yards and 98 rushing yards. He and his Maruaders will face Paramus Catholic at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, for the Non-Public, Group 4 championship.

Interesting that the playoffs are "non-public."

I wonder how many states do that. It's been an issue in Kentucky for a while now, with a vocal minority petitioning for separate public/private playoffs, but that's mostly because the big private schools in Louisville have had a strangle-hold on the big class state title for a long time now.

I thought it was an outlandish idea, but now I see that maybe it's not.

Down here, we have it separated, but the private school league gets no attention. Charlotte Catholic plays in a public conference in Charlotte. We have to prove we don't recruit by putting in regulations holding kids out a year from sports who move in. Same applies to a few other parochial schools around the state.

In Indiana, except for 6A, the tournament winners were Catholic schools all the time. The IHSAA recently changed the rules. If a school won the tournament two years in a row, they automatically got bumped up a class for the tournament.

The catch occurred at the 6- or 7-yard line rather than the 5-yard line. So that's 62-63 yards in the air. That's not steak sauce. Far from 65 yards.

So he's far from 75-yard, Kordell Stewart standards.

To be fair, if you are going to take off the 2 yards of Wimbush's pass then you need to recognize Stewart threw it from the 27 and it was first touched at the 2.

From Barton Simmons:
As for Wimbush, we're in the process of making some moves in our rankings now and he's one that could continue to climb. He's had a monster year, all the tools are there and he's performed well in every setting. His ranking won't be finalized until after the All-American games but he's a guy that we may reposition heading into that setting.

Not a lot of love for Kizer on this board. I feel like he's consistently overlooked when we talk about bridging from Malik to the "next guy."

*Raises Hand*

I think Kizer will end up being the best of Golson/Zaire/Kizer.

I think Kizer has the highest ceiling by far. I just hope he can get reps in to develop because he's also got the lowest floor in my opinion.

Gunner is and always has been a good QB. During his time at ND, Golson was in a better position for PT than he was and he didn't want to wait. There shouldn't be any hard feelings and to say he isn't good is pretty crazy. With that said I think Wimbush is the real deal and if I'm comparing the two at the same stage. I'll give the edge to Wimbush because he's the better ATH and everything else other than height is negligible. Since I don't believe Wimbush is too short to play QB i don't view the height differential as a major upperhand. Also, Wimbush may have a stronger arm, close call here, as Gunner is a big kid but he has some stiffness to him that I think keeps a lid on his real arm strength.

6'2" is tall enough. Ideally you like someone 6'4" or 6'5" but then those guys typically can't run quite as well.

Kizer definitely has best pro ceiling. I don't even really know if that's arguable. But he isn't especially fast (he IS "athletic" in the sense that he isn't a statue like Manning or Brady and can keep plays alive... similar to Winston in that regard).

QB situation is going to be mighty competitive next year and moving forward.

Gunner Kiel was the best rated QB in his class with Winston behind him, he also had a better offer list. Statistically and according to the rankings, Kiel was better. If this is about potential, i will go with Wimbush.

Every time this thread is bumped I freak out. This guy is more suited for Kelly's offense than anyone we have...IMO. He will be a menace with the read option as I think he is a natural runner. No need to comment on his arm strength (65+ yards in the air) or his accuracy as he was close to a record on completion %. I'd like to hear that he is leading the charge on the recruiting front AKA Jaylon.

Fear not brother.

This offense is a dual threat QB's dream. Any semi-intelligent QB recruit (which Wimbush is) can see that he's going to get infinite chances to chuck it all over the field and be THE man. He can see that the issues are with Golson's read/recognize/see the field, not with the offense itself IMO.
