What is the timeline for the NCAA to announce sanctions?

They work notoriously slow.... So take how long it took for our 5 players (Yes I know this was an ND investigation, not NCAA, but it was on par with how long the NCAA takes), and convert it to the time it'll take for 3,100 students to be reviewed. Add in the amount of time UNC will try to cover their tracks with voluntary sanctions, plus the time the NCAA sits on their hands hoping the public forgets this even happened, and voila.

Yes, please. Given the scope and severity of the allegations, free transfers for current players are a possibility. RB is major need for us, and getting Hood back in the fold would be poetic.

Which makes it wise for a fanbase to not down a kid if he decommits. You just never know how things may work out in the future. Not saying it will here but... something to keep in mind.

UNC fans seem to think they will not get hit with anything from the NCAA they already self punished themselves enough

Quoting myself to share a depressing realization. Given the nature of the UNC scandal, the odds that Hood's transcripts are good enough to transfer into ND are pretty poor.

Haha...just catching up to this thread and when I saw your first post I was actually surprised that you thought he could transfer in. Your post above is more in line with what I think will (not) happen here.

It'd be nice to have a bruiser though...

Death Penalty? For which sport? If the reports are true, and this reached students into the thousands, there will be multiple sports involved. Does every sport that had a player on it that falls into the scandal get the death penalty?

Although I dont think they will do it, that is a tough one. I don't want anyone not involved punished but there was athletic department level and upper admin level impropriety. It needs to be substantial.

Yeah, I do agree it needs to be a substantial punishment. It is a tough situation to pinpoint who should be penalized though. Gonna be interesting to watch.

No athletics of UNC is to be involved in postseason play of any kind for three years and is not to be shown on TV for two...

something the likes of that would fit.

I would add loss of scholarships for revenue generating sports to that.

Football: 65 schollies for 5 years, players free to transfer, no waiting to play elsewhere.
Basketball: 8 schollies for 5 years, same w transfers rules.

No TV, no postseason. Must show academic progress (not sure what measuring stick as grad rates are simply being met via sham classes).

The death penalty is appropriate. There are a bunch of schools that didn't have a program or were at a much lower level than FBS when SMU got their penalty and have shown more success than SMU has.

At the least drop them to FCS level in all sports with corresponding scholarship reductions - now. They are ineligible for TV or bowl appearances for three years.

All athletes may transfer providing they are in good academic standing for their current academic year. All students in the bogus courses receive a grade of F and GPAs for semester and overall are to be recomputed. The students were aware they were cheating they don't get a pass. If they have two wasted academic years while playing two seasons, they are left with two years of eligibility on their 5 year clock.

For every sport that has a player found guilty? For sports where 10, 20, 25% of their athletes are found guilty? By the way this story is coming out, multiple sports are going to be involved in this. If this were just a football issue I would completely agree. It is obviously more than football though.

I like some of the suggestions above. Removing them from TV, scholarships limits, post-season bans, those all sound pretty good.

Just watched the Pony Excess 30 for 30. They stated the Death Penalty is for repeat offenders within a 5 year time span.I dont recall if UNC was on probation or not before this stuff was made known. Most of those in the film think the NCAA will never use the death penalty again because of what it did to SMU. Wow...they were out of control.

I think they deserve it but is it on the same level as what SMU did and getting busted three times after being told to knock it off and involving the then governor of the state? The head of the athletic department straight up got busted on live national tv... I had no idea how bad all that was. Looks like Holtz learned alot from coaching in the SWC lol.

I mean the fake classes and maintaining eligibility is one thing. Writing papers is another and this is clearly a lack of institutional control. Is it worse than what SMU did? IDK.

SMU was all time. That big time donor was basically giving the NCAA the finger and had the Governor of Texas playing ball.

I was like 4 when it started and maybe 10 or so when it was resolved. I remember the 1989 ND vs SMU game.

This could be dynamite. The lawyers will have subpoena power to force testimony from several uncooperative witnesses who have so far refused to be interviewed, including some basketball staff.

I suppose this was inevitable, but the complete lack of personal responsibility is still infuriating:

Former UNC athlete sues school over academic scandal - CNN.com

Yeah, I wasn't aware that someone at UNC held a gun to his head and forced him to take classes that were a complete joke.

To be fair, at some of these schools, they straight up force you to sign up for these classes. There are hundreds of stories of kids getting forced out of engineering or science or business to joke classes because other majors have classes that "conflict with the football schedule" and they say they'll pull the kids scholarship if they don't.

However... no, that doesn't make you cheat.
