I don't think he's mobile enough (yet!) to play every down. The freaky thing about Lou was that he was big, fast and could actually move laterally with ease. From what I am seeing from Cage so far is a guy who plays low and is powerful. Definitely hyped to see how he can develop.

Don't think I saw him play yesterday. Can anyone confirm?

I rewatched the game this afternoon and caught a glimpse of big 75. I do not recall at what point of the game it was, however. Apparently Blankenship also saw some time? I did not see him or Bonner on the field.

Thanks guys...I didn't see Cage or Grant, but with so many 3 and outs forced by the defense they probably were not needed.

CRYSTAL BALL

I think a season like the one Jarron Jones had in 2014 might be a nice ceiling for Cage, with a 7.5 TFL and 40 tackles being a really nice year. (Remember, that was done in 11 games, too.) Realistically, Cage might get some of his productivity eaten up by a highly-motivated Jones, who is playing a fifth-year that’s essentially an audition for NFL talent evaluators.

Reading between the lines, Keith Gilmore and VanGorder have talked about a larger rotation up front for the defensive line. That’ll likely be some by necessity—Sheldon Day isn’t walking through those doors anymore—and the fact that there’s some versatility among the group of linemen who will hopefully provide answers this season.

Cage is a huge piece of that ensemble. Even last season, he was Notre Dame’s fifth-most productive player, per the PFF College rankings. He’s got the bulk and strength to play in the trenches, assuming his fitness and health cooperate this year.

He’s not going to get confused for a NFL-sized monster like Jones, though he does have the ability to flash at the level of someone like Ian Williams—a guy who is wearing a ‘C’ on his jersey in the NFL right now. So all in all, Cage is a good player who could put together a great season.

Quiet thread I guess.

I really like Daniel Cage and I think he may surprise us this year. I really like how we have him as well as Jones and Tillery (all over 300 lbs.) as well as pretty solid young depth to rotate and stuff gaps especially against power run/option teams like Stanford and Army/Navy. He was serviceable as a freshman and a little better this past year. Let's hope he takes another step up. GO IRISH.

Well, shit. Didn't realize he'd had that many. Wonder if he should shut it down for the year.

Maybe this will also show his brother that football won't last forever and injuries can prevent you from going to the NFL. A Notre Dame education is very nice to fall back on.

Per II podcast, had knee surgery June 15th. They expect him to be a non factor this year.

You guys should be freaking out more about this. This is the type of thing at the type of position that costs us wins. We were already rail thin on quality depth on the DL.

what was the procedure for?

They did not specify.

They basically went into discussing with his injury record, his already over weight-ness, and the fact he'll have little time to get into shape, the type of surgery really did not matter.

Who said that?

what was the procedure for?

They did a partial meniscectomy for him to come back that fast. I had that done in my playing days and was supposed to be out 2 months and was back playing in little over a month.

IF it were a full repair assuming no other ligament / tendon damage, 4-6 months.

Four days after Daniel Cage underwent knee surgery, the Notre Dame nose guard was ambling around without crutches.

A full recovery from a June 15 procedure to repair a torn meniscus will take a while longer, but Irish head football coach Brian Kelly said the part-time starter in 2015 and ’16 is expected to be 100 percent when Notre Dame opens training camp, Aug. 1 in Culver, Ind.

“He was continuously developing an effusion, swelling,” Kelly said. “So we went in there and snipped the cartilage. It was a pretty good bucket tear, so they had to suture that.”

We'll see, thanks for sharing though. I think expecting him to be good to go August 1st is a stretch. Perhaps medically cleared, but with a weak leg and 15 pounds out of shape. I think that's what the II guys are getting at by saying he'll be a non factor.

From your article:

Dr. Crusader with the correct diagnosis. Been there, done that.

Partial Meniscectomy: This is a surgery performed to remove the damaged portion of meniscus. The torn meniscus is removed from the joint causing the remaining meniscus to be smaller than normal. If there is little healing potential of the meniscus, this is the best treatment. One advantage of removing the torn meniscus is that the recovery is much faster with most athletes returning to sports activities within 6 weeks.

Meniscus Repair: A meniscus repair is performed to sew together the torn part of the meniscus back in its proper position. This procedure is only possible when there is a good blood supply to the area of damage to allow for healing of the tear. Healing of the meniscus repair requires a much longer rehabilitation that often requires 3 months or longer to return to sports activities.
