In other news, I have been looking for a wood burning insert for months. Couldn't afford a new $3,000 unit, but than randomly found a guy that is remodeling his brand new house and doesn't want his never used wood burning insert. Told me if I remove it, I can have it.

Coincidence?... I think not...

I went to Mendoza so I'm no expert on "researchy" fields like Engineering or Physics, but isn't one of the major issues that the "big time" researchers don't actually want to teach undergraduates, but Notre Dame makes them? My mother works at Brown and they struggle with the same issue. Their faculty have to teach undergrads so they have trouble recruiting some of those rainmaker-type researchers.

I think the solution is having a mix of research-first and education-first faculty, and keeping tenure dependent on both. It is true that sometimes very good researchers don't want to deal with undergrads, but often a lot of that is the university only looking at research in tenure decisions. Some students want to go get a PhD and find that our substandard research ability is a real hindrance to seeing what that would be like at a world class institution. Also, sometimes having someone who wrote the book on a subject teach a class is worth a small compromise in attention.

I think that the way intro engineering at ND is done is the best, with large lectures and small breakout classes with faculty to go over the material and do labs.

It's not so much teaching undergraduates that's the issue. It's more about having great doctoral students to work with. A place like ND doesn't have too many top-notch doctoral programs so if you go to work there it's harder to get really good grad students who are assets to research projects. This is a crucial part of the equation for researchers. Brown is similar except they probably have a few more departments that have better doctoral programs.

Plus - and I know nobody wants to hear this - it's really hard to draw top researchers, who are in demand, to South Bend. Even harder than it is to draw them to Ann Arbor, Columbus etc.

Watch one of our backs somehow go off for a 100 yards... it's a crazy game like that sometimes.

Yeah Stanford's front seven against the Irish OL is terrifying. I expect to see Kelly roll the pocket and finally utilize zone reads.

Agreed. The quality of Stanford's front seven (especially in light of Stanley's rumored illness) is major cause for concern. That said, Syracuse's front-7--which is above average and extremely aggressive--was handled pretty well by our reshuffled OL. So there's cause for cautious optimism as well.

I'm praying that one day we'll get high speed rail in the midwest. It would be a lot easier to attract top researchers to ND if we could promise top flight students (which, as a former instructor at a B1G school, is a big deal. Idiots detract from EVERYTHING) and the ability to easily commute from Chicago.

Not sure if it has been mentioned already, but Carlisle and Collinsworth are expected to be back, this week. Collinsworth might be limited, but it sounds like Carlisle should be a full go, if they want.

Does anyone else think Stanford might be getting a little to much praise in this game? I know Stanford is good and are by far the best team ND has played yet but Stanford has not looked like world beaters this year. They looked like garbage in the loss to USC and had a tough game against Washington. Washington beat Hawaii 17-16.

FWIW, Washington's QB was suspended for that game. On the season, he's 63/100 for 632 yards, 10 TDs, zero INTs and can run.

I fear I'm derailing this a bit too much, but one major problem with our reliance on cars to get around is that the entire system of suburbs/cars/sprawl is utterly utterly unsustainable---not in a "I love hugging trees" kind of way, but in a "we can't possibly afford to maintain it and people will die because it" kind of way (see 35W bridge collapse, for example).

High speed rail connecting major cities, within which local rail connects you to important destinations, would be a major step forward in affordable infrastructure. I'm sure our resident OSU grad city planner would be able to comment further.

In terms of football stuff, I'm very concerned about the players being sick. I'm sensing a pittsburgh 2012 performance coming up, without the terrible opponent to allow us back into the game at the last second.

I do. NO ONE even people on this board are bringing up the fact that ND was down 27-20 in the 4th with the ball twice, injured D-line and Tommy Rees throwing picks and STILL could have won that game. I honestly would be kinda surprised if the Irish lose.

Oh, no I didn't know that. However that would explain why that game was so close.
Thanks Koon.

And this years Stanford team is in no way as good as last years. Stanford lost a ton of proven talent. If ND plays clean and the O-line holds up, I think they win comfortably. But that's just my opinion.

I'm with you. And they already lost to a team we are better than IMO.

This is the kind of team we favorably match up against IMO. They are built for comfort, not speed, and that doesn't scare me.

*I hate it when people compare Stanford to Bama. The comparisons stop at power football, and it would be like saying Sidney Poitier and Rob Schneider are the same because they both are actors.....

I am concerned about Typically Montgomery and the effectiveness with play action. If we can pressure Hogan and not bite on play action I like our odds.

Stanford's defense is likely worthy of the praise. If the Cardinal is overrated, its due to analysts either overlooking or downplaying their offensive issues.

Based on the games played thus far, I'm confident that ND is a better team and would win 7/10 times on a neutral field. But the rumors of certain key linemen being stricken with flu means we may not be trotting the same team out on the field that handled Syracuse.

And even if we do, any time you face an imbalanced team that is really good in one phase of the game, there's always a chance for a transcendent performance. Our defense did it many times in 2012, and Stanford's could do it tomorrow.

IDK. Probably already said, but.... Our OL worries me against their D. Their bigger WRs worry me against our small CBs. I think we win a close one, but let's face it..... We really haven't played anyone either. This is our first game against decent talent/coaching. Tomorrow IMO is the first actual test we'll have.

Very valid points. The flu rumors really suck. I hope it's not that bad.

Any word on how Stanford's O-line has looked this year?
