Were you in the stadium? There was a VERY anti-Golson vibe in my section and the sections around me. I'm not the only one who wasn't immediately impressed. There were "put in Malik" and "you suck, Golson" shouts* pretty much from the first quarter through halftime. One of the benefits of being in the stadium versus watching on TV is your view of the entire field versus just where the camera focuses. There were a number of times watching live where there were open receivers down the field that he just didn't see. The stadium can see "HOLY SH*T, AMIR IS WIDE OPEN," but it's hard to watch open receivers and the situation in the pocket at the same time.

*Not from me.

Well, which is it?

I really wish Golson would just step into the pocket more. I understand extending the play, but it'd be great if he could do it in the right direction because Rice DEs =/= FSU DEs.

That being said... we're going 12-0.

My wife, too. She's a pro at the basics of football (rules and whatnot), but she's a novice when it comes to technique, strategy, and those types of things. She can't stand watching EG because, for whatever reason, he refuses to tuck the football. High and tight, son.

To be fair...

1) that is a 2012 Shamrock game shot...what, like game 5 of his on field career?

2) when holding it like that and still in the backfield, he can pull it up and pass or fake same, tucking tells them for sure you are running

Where are people watching their replays of the Rice vs. Notre Dame game? Did you all just record it from your tv, or is there some sort of online file I could access?

What's the amount of games one can play and still retain that extra year of eligibility? 3? Or am I understanding the rules incorrectly?

A single play burns the traditional redshirt. The medical waiver is granted if you play less than 30% of the season or 3 games, whichever is longer, and none of the games in which you play can be in the second half of the season.

You'll start to see mysterious "back strains" and vaguely defined "knee injuries" around the start of October. I'm a bit skeptical as to how "hurt" GB was last season, for example.

Two plasma treatments and surgery weren't enough to convince you, huh?

Great avatar, reps sir! If that is a picture of you, could you mail me a pair of your old shoes?

Great! I would rep you guys, but I don't know what that means or how to do it.

Look over to the left of this post. That's right! Where my avatar is! Now straight down, jus above "Post Reply." There are three symbols. On the right is something that looks like a slow moving vehicle sign. In the middle, a silver scales.

Click on the silvers scales. It will bring up a box for Reputation. There will be two choices. The default is a positive "rep." The other is a negative rep. You don't want to select that until you really know what you are doing. And you never want to select it when you are not in charge of your emotions. Below the choices is a box for a message. You can write something nice, like, "Bogs, you are the man!" Or you can leave it blank; after all reps are reps!

You can practice with mine by giving me one.

Now the next lesson is to go to the vbucks plaza and buy unlimited reps. Because otherwise, you won't be able to rep me two times in a row, without giving reps to others.

Finally, rep and reward quality. Spread it around. It always comes back to you! Good luck, Fáilte ar bord agus Téigh Gaeilge!

The bolded is true according to a literal interpretation of the NCAA rules (or appeared to be the last time I looked at them), but we discussed this in relation to Ronnie Stanley back in 2012 (and probably in 1,000,000 other threads) and there's some evidence that the NCAA customarily gives you a sort of grace period that allows you to play sparingly in the first half of the season without burning your redshirt. See IrishLion's post #536 in the Ronnie Stanley thread and the discussion thereabouts. http://www.irishenvy.com/forums/201...-ot-ronnie-stanley-notre-dame-signed-loi.html

I'm still not sure what to believe on this issue.

I think that the "one snap, one season" rule is automatic. Like: if you don't play AT ALL one year, you automatically get an additional year. The other cases seem to be case-by-case and require application to the NCAA for approval.

Or something.

Maybe.

EDIT: I also feel like I read somewhere that special teams don't count unless you record a statistic (the "Rudy rule").

I don't think that is right. Traditionally its 5 years to play 4 seasons is what is allowed, with exceptions being a a 6th year for medical reasons. Greg Bryant played in the first game (at least 3 snaps) and was then shut down before the Purdue game, apparently but unknown to all of us. I believe he has his redshirt year. I can think of many others as well.

I can document that I had the idea a month before you posted it!

To clear this up, a "Red shirt" is essentially no snaps in your first year. Then there is Hardship, which is what you apply for if you have taken less that 20% of the snaps, in three games or fewer, all in the first half of the season. It can be for medical reasons, or other hardship reasons. Then there is a full blown medical red shirt. The difference, long term is whether you want to apply for a sixth year of eligibility. In other words, if you sustain two serious medical injuries that prohibit you from playing four years in five, you may be granted a sixth.

The difference is Devin Gardner, versus Jamoris Slaughter. ND didn't document the knee injury JS had his freshman year, or it happened before he got to the Bend. So he wasn't allowed a sixth year. Devin Gardner was, because Michigan is usually right on top of that paperwork. And they were, even if it was hazy . . .

Yeah, see, this is basically what I thought too, Bogs, and the NCAA rules seemed to support this understanding when I looked at them. But it seems that Kelly and the staff have a different understanding of the rules, in line with what Cack said. They've been operating under the assumption that a player can play sparingly in a couple games in the first half of the season without losing a year of eligibility, regardless of whether he gets injured. See our discussion of this in 2012 in the Ronnie Stanley thread, linked above. It may be a sort of custom-and-practice thing, or an "unwritten rule."

I really just don't understand it.

Wasn't Ronnie Stanley medical?
