Well, we could.

But then there might be more investigations down the line.

I don't understand how top tier state universities have such terrible class loads that you are almost incapable of transferring an entire year's worth of credits. I went to Georgia Tech and I'm not sure any credits were lost when I left. This is the sad state college athletics - if you can run fast and hit hard then you get filled with garbage classes that can take you nowhere in life. Feel bad for the kids who are stuck with this crap.

NOT COMING PER LOY

Fitts won't be transferring to Notre Dame. Per our sources and without going into too much detail, the transfer won't work academically and Fitts will have to seek other opportunities to continue his efforts as a student-athlete. There is a chance that he will attempt to transfer into other schools from the PAC-12 and try to play immediately, but that will take approval from the NCAA and an appeals process which will likely occur soon. If that doesn't workout, he will have to drop to the Division 2 level to play immediately, or seek the junior college route.

Rats.

How could it not work academically after only one year though? Seems like he could just start over, and he'd have plenty of time to finish up before he runs out of eligibility. I guess we just won't take anyone if they can't finish in four years?

That's what I don't understand. Our players enroll in summer sessions every year. Catching him up shouldn't be an issue, as long as he understands coming in he may have to take a heavier-than-average course load to graduate on time.

This is a kid we were recruiting hard just last year. How could his freshman course load at UCLA have made him academically irredeemable? Especially in light of Ishaq's uncertain status, this is really puzzling.

I agree. He seemed to be a great fit academically out of high school, I don't get how one year of UCLA could make him more than a semester behind. Seems crazy.

Who is actually reporting this? Because Panda's post says that its NOT being reported by Loy. Was this just on a message board or something?

no it was LOY ...i said NOT coming per LOY and linked the article at bottom

This kind of stuff regarding academics was mentioned on isd powerhour on monday...mike said despite recruiting a person in high school when it comes to recruiting them after enrolling somewhere else is a totally different animal...as things change a lot....also mentioned "depth chart"/playing time..not SPECIFIC to Fitts but when they look at accepting someone is this a real reason they were looking to transfer.......REMEMBER Kylie stated that WASN'T a reason but when a lot of people leave they mention that wasn't a factor when a lot of times it was

Exactly! With careful planning and no futzing about trying to pick a major, he could easily earn a degree from ND in six semesters and two summers.

But maybe Fitts wants to major in business or something that's particularly difficult to transfer into? I mean, as we know from our boy RackEm, you can't transfer into Mendoza. Gotta be something like that I guess.

If this is the case, then I would be pretty pissed if I was BK. Here is a kid that was ok'd by them a year ago and now arbitrarily being denied. As Whiskey posted, something disastrous would have had to happen academically for him to be more than a semester behind in transferable credits.

Seems almost like its just the admissions department being careful because of recent events? Hell, I don't know. But simply saying no to this kid seems idiotic.

In Fitts' case, there's a clear positional need on our in end. So I assume this is referring to depth chart/ playing time issues on UCLA's end. Maybe our staff did some digging on why the kid is transferring and didn't like what they found? But the only people who would have a solid read on that are UCLA's coaching staff, and I have a hard time imagining that we have a good working relationship with them after the Vanderdoes incident.

TJ's take on this,

This decision wasn't made solely by Admissions. Nor was it related to current events in any way. We need to stick to facts and reality.

Which is to say, the decision is made by a committee of people from the academic college and department(s) to which he applied for transfer, with Admissions and certain others involved more peripherally. Translateable and transferable college credit must reasonably match up with ND degree progress requirements overall and for that college and program, and the transcript must show reasonable success and satisfactory results at the college level. I can tell you it's not that unreasonable a bar or standard on both factors for athletes wanting in, who otherwise fit a school, etc. Frankly, it's quite doable, and has little to do with calculus which can be taken at ND.

Don't assume what you don't know. Don't assume both reasonable factors/elements were even satisfactory simply because of past HS recruitment or because he was at UCLA. Stuff happens along the way and must be evaluated. It's not that high a bar here, but it's a bar that wasn't nearly reached. It's a shame, obviously, but as you know, ND cannot take just anyone.

Why would our staff care if that is why he was transferring anyway? Just because he doesn't like the depth chart, doesn't mean that he's not a fit for us.

Think of it this way. If the kid was promised early playing time (would not be surprising with Mora) and didn't get it, I'm sure he would be upset. Possibly upset enough to rethink his decision of picking UCLA simply based on football alone. Instead, wanting to play football at a place like Notre Dame where he got a blend of football, academics and religion.

mike just said that they(ND coaches) look into why player X transfers out whether due to depth chart/playing time, academics and "personal reasons"...if it was due to playing time or other areas that was due to them needing them to put the work in, then we arn't going to take them in....he stressed a lot of things change from recruiting player x in high school vs accepting them from a college....a variety of issues he said but wasn't real specific--------all of this was brought up in regards to people wanting to know where we stood w/ Fitts

I transferred from a nationally ranked state university to a well respected private university and after 3 semesters and a summer...54 hours, only 39 transferred. The problem with my 5 classes that didn't transfer wasn't that they were bogus classes, it was they didn't fit into Valpo's limited curriculum.

This could be the problem with Fitts. UCLA obviously has classes that would transfer... its just does ND offer what he had taken?

Too bad... really liked this kid but a few years down the road when DE is ND's strongest position besides OL... we'll be like, "Remember when we could have had the Fitts kid too?"

Now if he was an inside linebacker or strong safety...

Transferring in college ain't easy. When I looked into a transfer from ND to "upper level" schools with credible programs when ND decided to eliminate Communication Arts, my choice of major, (Later resurrected as Film and Television at ND) I hit many walls.

Many of the required courses I took as a freshman and first semester sophomore didn't mean Jack to others. The standard response was that I was already too far behind the curve to be an acceptable candidate.

Would remedial or summer courses (not to mention dedicated tutors) at Notre Dame be offered, free of charge, to other students wanting to transfer were they not prized athletes? I think not.

This is a rare case of "One Size Fits All" that may well be appropriate.

Another golden opportunity squandered, by him. Position of need no less..

My opinion bolded.
Like Ty Isaac, I would love to have Kylie, but decisions have consequences. I wish he had made a different one a year ago.

Can't fault him for thinking UCLA was the best fit for him. Also can't fault him for realizing it's not a good fit now (perhaps sold a bill of goods?). However, we can blame ND for making it fucking near impossible for a kid ONE YEAR into an otherwise highly regarded academic institution to transfer in. It's part of why football program will be forever mediocre.

What do you mean by this? Are you saying Notre Dame squandered the opportunity here?

See TJ's post (via Lucci) on the last page. Sounds like ND's transfer requirements are pretty reasonable, but Fitts couldn't even clear that low bar. Without more information on those requirements and Fitts' coursework, there's no reason to curse the administration here.

Didn't seem to be a problem for Amir Carlisle. I'm not buying this point.

WTF does Amir have to do with Fitts? My point is that the school makes it near impossible for a kid to transfer in. Can you name the last undergrad to transfer in before Amir? You can't say that because the system has allowed for ONE transfer in over the past X years that it's not flawed or at least part of what puts this program behind the 8-ball.
