we'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think he sucks at all. He looked great in that Army game and by all accounts (Rivals, Scout, 247) he was one of the top overall performers for the week of practice and the best RB there during the week.

Last season he came into Michigan over-weight and on top of that got injured early in fall camp and had to sit out which put him behind even more. The OL was atrocious last year, and I don't think any of our RB's looked good running behind that line.

From what I've heard, Green struggles in pass protecting, catching the ball, and he's struggled picking up the new playbook. I don't think this means he sucks, he's still a young player (true sophomore) and some guys just take longer to develop than others.

Green has put in the work to drop weight and get in shape this off-season, and that will only help him down the line. He's not out of the RB competition by any stretch. They won't have a starter until 3-4 games into the year at the earliest IMO. They'll let all 3 of those guys have a chance and whoever separates on the field in the games will get the nod. If the OL doesn't improve drastically though, it really won't matter who gets the nod to be the starter.

re: Ty Isaac, I'm pretty sure he isn't getting his waiver and will redshirt. Which honestly would be the best thing anyways. I don't think they want to have four backs in the same class (Isaac, Smith, Green, and Johnson).

To the bolded, per people who coached against him "He has good straight line speed and is extremely powerful. He can run over virtually any tackler 1v1. He won't be able to do that at the next level and I don't see why anyone thinks that he projects as an elite college or pro prospect."

Again, I thought it was sour grapes at the time. If he doesn't break through at all this season, I'm going to start to believe that it was just 100% accurate. Guys who are one-trick ponies fail when that trick stops working... guys like Nick Brosette and Elijah Hood and such I think are far superior prospects because they are natural runners who know instinctively how to make the moves they need to make.

Green starting to sound like GAIII. One redeeming quality that isn't enough to make a full-time impact (of course I'd rather my one-dimensional guy have homerun speed because of the versatility it offers on special teams, but that's another debate).

you might be absolutely right. I did think Green looked stiff last year, but he was playing at almost 250 pounds on a 5'11/6'ft frame. He looked nothing like the guy that was a 5* RB recruit in high school. He was flat out just a total fat ass.

derrick-green.jpg

That was him at 220 pounds, and part of the reason why he was a 5*. 30 pounds overweight will make most RB's look pretty bad. Jury is still out, he's only a true sophomore. Too much pressure is put on high profile recruits these days to be stars right away or else. He's still got time.

This was him this time last year...

Tipped the scales at 248. Should've red-shirted last year, because he was just a straight up over-weight, out of shape tub of lard. That's bad coaching on Hoke's part. He burned his shirt for nothing. Something Hoke seems to like to do. Should've sent him a message that if he's going to be in that kind of shape then he's not going to ever see the field.

Derrick Green was without a doubt the most overrated prospect two year ago. That is not sour grapes at all. It was the Mike Farrell hype machine.

Jabrill Peppers on the other hand, will be the best player in the Big Ten whenever he wants to be. I think he will be special. I am jelly about him, completely jelly

I thought Green lived up to his hype in the Army bowl against other top prep talent. Rivals wasn't the only site to rank him high, Scout also had him as a 5* and the #1 RB. ESPN had him in the top 40 players, 247 had him in the top 100, both had him in the top 5-6 RB's in the country. So I don't think it was merely the Mike Farrell hype machine.

Was he overrated? Only time will tell. He didn't start off his freshman year on a good note, that much is for sure. I'm not saying one way or the other, all I'm saying is it's probably still way too early to make that judgement call.

I really do think DeVeon Smith may wind up being the better back though. He just seems to be a more complete, all-around RB. Something very Mike Hart-ish about his game IMO.

I think you might be right. A lot of people liked Tarean Folston more then Greg Bryant. Even though Bryant was the 5*

I watched Green play in the Army Bowl and every time he was shown the commentators kept repeating how hard he works/his fitness regime/how he lost a ton of weight etc. and i still thought he looked fat and sloppy! I wasn't surprized when I saw him play for SCUM how bad he was.

There was literally nothing about Derrick Green's game that was 5-star quality. He's the biggest head scratcher of a top 30 prospect that I can ever remember. To the point where it was comical.

Look at his highlight reel (LINK).

*Decent power on a short TD as several linemen get a great push.

*Untouched short TD

*Generic run up the middle. Taken down by first tackler.

*Makes one guy miss on a decent run, taken down by first tackler.

*Pitch to his left, doesn't get the edge.

*Run up the middle, breaks one very weak arm tackle and taken down by first tackler.

*Virtually untouched short TD run.

*Nice catch out of the backfield and makes a couple guys miss. Really, the first play that shows off something more than low 3-star talent.

*Short TD run, untouched again.

*Pitch right, doesn't get the edge.

*Pitch left, shows off decent speed with great blocking.

*Nice cut-back TD, nearly shoe-string tackled.

*Untouched short TD, yet again.

On and on it goes. Honestly, how was Green rated any higher than a typical low 4-star bigger back? It makes no sense.

He's got really quick feet, there's no denying that. For his size he moves pretty well. Decent agility and moves in space pretty well. But so do 50 other RB's every year. He reminds me a lot of Robert Hughes. He'll flash an occasional really athletic play for a big back, but far too slow and not dynamic enough to be a No. 1-type running back even in college.

I'll be shocked if Green ever rises above a backup at UM. And with their OL problems I'd be very worried if I were him. Maybe, just maybe, he could be a really effective runner if he were at Wisconsin and he was running through big holes on a consistent basis.

The one thing that is crazy is that Green just doesn't break tackles. For a supposed 5-star power back with a ton of weight he was frighteningly unable to shrug off anyone who squared him up and got their body on his body. And that was in high school. I'd bet a ton of money that he has a very mediocre college career.

I'll spare the Green trash talk until after we beat them. Any RB with his size and quickness has the potential to dominate, it all comes down to work ethic. He reminds me of Legarret Blount and he was really good in college.

Does he have the heart of a Greg Bryant? We'll see.

Until then Mr. Green, good afternoon, good evening, and fuccccccck Michigan!

Green may have been overrated but I recall a certain Jonas Gray who didn't put it together until his final year and then nearly hit the century mark if it wasn't for a shithead Pitt player taking out his knee.

I won't trash talk the players but Fuck Michigan.

They’ve Got Next: 10 Players Moving Into Star Roles at Spring Football «

Jabrill Peppers, DB, Michigan

For readers who keep tabs on the hyperbolic world of college football recruiting, Peppers needs no introduction, but he could certainly benefit from a reset. Far from being the dynamic, instant-impact star the hype led Michigan fans to expect,4 Peppers spent most of his freshman campaign on ice, nursing a vague leg injury and venting his frustration as the Brady Hoke era in Ann Arbor lurched to a depressing close. In keeping with the seasonal theme, this spring marks a fresh start: A new coach is in charge, Peppers’s freshman eligibility has been restored, and expectations for a healthy Peppers are well on their way to matching 2014 levels.

Seems like he would be too small to play the SAM. Would think he would play CB or S to help his draft stock for next year.

He's playing the same role as Matt Milano did for BC. Which is more of a "Star" linebacker position. Peppers is actually bigger that Matt Milano as well. I think he will excel there and it will propel him into a safety on the pro level.

he isn't going to need his stock to rise and if anything it just shows how versatile he is...dude could be 1st rd rb, corner and safety....unfortunately he plays for them:(

You want a guy of this talent where he can make plays. Plus with brown as their DC they will blitzing a ton more so why wouldn't you put possibly the best athlete in the country at a spot where he can unleash hell on offenses

Tweeted out that he ran a 4.34 yesterday. Who knows if that's hand-timed or FAT, or if it's even real at all, but if so that's really flying for a guy his size who's going to be a hybrid S/LB this year.

he's a burner, for sure. Not quite the 6'1 he's listed at, maybe more like a tick under 6'0, but he's built rock solid at least 210 lbs. and yeah the kid can fucking fly and he's agile with the ball in his hands. Can cut on a dime and give you change. He's hands down the best RB on the entire Michigan roster. Seriously. It's a bunch of pedestrian at the RB position. Team needs a dynamic RB badly, hasn't had one since Mike Hart back in forever ago. And the crazy thing is he's the best RB but he plays DB/LB hybrid position lol.

Trade you Peppers for two of our loaded backfield of backs. Folston and Brent sound good?

Lol only guy I'd trade him for is a top flight QB.

Love the guys versatility. He can do almost anything on the football field. I really think if he focused on only CB or only Safety or only RB that he'd be a 1st round pick at any one of those positions.

Just re-watched some of his highlights. He had his downs as you'd expect from a RS Frosh getting his first real playing time, but my god did he make so many plays on offense, defense, and special teams that just made you go WHOA. Dude is a freak of nature athlete for sure. Speed, power, agility, explosion, quickness, size, strength- he has it all. There really isn't one thing that he lacks as an athlete. Complete freak of nature.

Rashan Gary might've been ranked higher, but give me Peppers. I still think Peppers will prove to be the most important recruit that Michigan's landed in over a decade.
