The article says that the best bet is that TWOW will come out about the same time as Season 5 of the show. That will be in spring of 2015, right? And that would be inconsistent with her Twitter comment that the book won't come out in 2015.

I thought that particular passage in the article meant that tWoW would be marketed alongside season 5 of the show, not released with season 5.

tWoW being released with season 5 of the show would mean an April 2015 release, and I haven't seen anything that makes me confident in that projection.

I don't think so:

It is also believed that the release date of 'Winds of Winter' will be timed closer to the 'Game of Thrones' Season 5 premiere date, so that both the book series as well as the show support each other from the point of publicity. Considering this, some think that 'Winds of Winter' may be released sometime in 2014 to 2015.

EDIT: Oh, but I see now that the publicist was calling that article "wishful thinking." My bad. Sounds like it's not close to being done.

From a publicity standpoint, why release a date three weeks from now when we just had SDCC?

I think there's a mistake in there somewhere. Based on the linked article, I think she must have read the question wrong, and what she meant was that it's "very unlikely, I'd say," that TWOW will be released in 2014.

If it was coming out in 2014 it would have absolutely been announced by now. So I think he did indeed mean to say 2015 despite the comment about Season 5.

Right, definitely, I was saying that she WAS saying that it won't be coming out in 2014, and WASN'T saying that it is unlikely to come out in 2015, i.e., it won't come out till 2016.

But having re-read the Twitter convo, I am less sure that I read that correctly. She may indeed have been saying that it won't come out till 2016.

From /r/asoiaf:

For as much love Syrio gets on here, this sub seems to neglect some of his most important words to Arya. We all look but we don't see. Season 5 is not going to spoil anything significant from TWOW, and here's why I think so:
  • Lady Stoneheart did not appear in Season 4, but is a fairly big part of Jaime + Brienne's story nonetheless.
  • All signs point to Jaime in Dorne next season, which means his Riverlands story has been delayed.
  • Sansa's story next season has been confirmed to be changed from TWOW (show-only plotline like Craster's in S4). An expected "tour of the Vale" for S5.
  • Brienne will travel around the Riverlands + Vale for most of S5 following her AFFC story. By the end she will confirm Sansa is okay as well as Arya (who she just met) which is the information she will use to spare her life from LSH at the end of the season (rather than "sword".)
  • Jaime will be in Dorne to introduce the Sand Snakes, Doran, etc. If the speculation about Trystane assuming the roles of Arianne and then Quentyn, we could assume Jaime returns following Trystane's departure. This allows for the ADWD/TWOW material with Jaime, Brienne, and LSH to appear in S6.
  • People worry about Bran's story spoiling stuff for TWOW but let's face it, there's only two paths his story can go in S5: Greenseer training and historical flashbacks, or Greenseer training and more information about the Others. Since we know the Others don't do anything by the time Jon is assassinated, anything we get this season on them would be background info, like S4E4.
  • As a side note, we will get Balon's death this season, timed with Asha's arrival at Pyke. Someone will tell her that her uncles are returning home, all with claims to the Seastone Chair. This sets up Kingsmoot for S6 and explains the lack of castings for our beloved Greyjoys.
TLDR - Don't panic.
Edit: Don't forget that Jon, Tyrion, Dany, Sam, Cersei, Arya, and Reek will all have their ADWD stories, which is where most of the meat for the season will come from.

I don't see it playing out like that at all. I may be off base here but, I thought I read somewhere that there will only be 7 seasons. If that's the case I don't see how season five can play out this way.

so that video was saying:
R+L=D
B+A=J

seems plausible the way the guy described it...i bet the show does a half season of flashbacks to explain it all. :)

have to admit the show is setting this all up around J and D...and they know more than most about whats to come.

The timeline of R+L=D doesn't work. Jon was born in 283 AC and Dany was born in 284. Lyanna died at the ToJ in 283 so she was dead when Daenerys was born.

Of all the evidence that guy brings out, the one thing I think is most solid is Danaerys frequently remembering the lemon tree outside of her bedroom. That points to Dorne.

But, there are plenty of holes in this new theory, too.

However, it proves that there are enough "holes" in R+L=J that Martin still might be able to pull out a parentage surprise or two in ways we haven't thought about yet. I think the most compelling evidence is that Ned references "failing" in his promise. But if R+L=J is true, then he didn't really fail. If the promise is such crucial evidence to R+L=J, then Ned failing kind of makes it difficult to move forward with.

I didn't find that theory persuasive. I do think he made some good arguments for why "the Promise" does not relate to Jon and the lemon tree thing was interesting but otherwise I didn't think he supported his arguments well.

i..e a good chunk of the argument was based on Howland staring. Really?

"There's no more wood." Dareon had paid the innkeep double for a room with a hearth, but none of them had realized that wood would be so costly here. Trees did not grow on Braavos, save in the courts and gardens of the mighty.

Well that means the lemon tree theory is bad too. So there's really not much that guy has to offer IMO.

The one thing that made me go "hmm..." is why Ned's fever dreams would carry him back to Jon Snow. There's really no reason to be thinking about him when he's off on the wall.

Agreed with most of the comments here. The only compelling piece of that theory is the bit about the lemon tree outside of Dany's window, which probably points to Dorne, but not necessarily the Tower of Joy. The ToJ is located on the northern edge of the Red Mountains of Dorne, within the Prince's Pass. In other words, it ain't even remotely close to Dorne proper, which is hot enough for lemon trees to thrive. I'd assume it's much closer in climate to the Dornish Marches than Sunspear.

Disclaimer: I haven't watched the clip so maybe this is addressed in some fashion.

Given our lessons on Robert Baratheon's offspring and recessive genes, wouldn't a Targaryen/Stark offspring look like a Stark rather than a Targaryen as Dany does?

So, am I understanding correctly that this means they are avoiding entering spoiler territory, for now at least, in terms of Bran's story north of the Wall?

That would bode well in terms of avoiding other spoilers in general, no?

I think it's a good sign that we'll see Winds of Winter before season 6. If it wasn't going to be here by then anyways, they probably would have said "screw it."

Just read a good post on /r/asoiaf about Sam's research into the history of the Night's Watch. Makes a lot of sense for the larger narrative.

Eh, I always interpreted that line as Sam geeking about the lost history of the Watch that he might discover in Oldtown. I did enjoy that post though.
