My personal opinion, while communications is pretty weak if it's your sole focus, I think it's a great idea to slap on as a minor or certificate program. It can help almost any major but especially business.

Last thing I'll add on this Blake's Dad conversation is he talks about how impressive Kiffin is. The same coach that when USC canned him they immediately got better and no they weren't able to add free agents. He's just a shit coach.

Alabamians can't spell "communications", how the hell are they supposedly #2 in the major? However, looking at their rankings, they not bad. Communications there good. They're also ranked pretty high in on-campus crime, so their journalism students have plenty to report on I suppose. Their tuition is also pretty hefty, so I'm guessing it's mostly out-of-staters.

Communications offers the same poor employment prospects as most liberal arts degrees (probably among the worst, in fact), without any of the benefits that liberal arts majors usually receive-- like learning how to think.

Lol. Yeah I am no expert but my limited experience attending a good liberal arts school was that Communication majors were major fuck-ups. Seriously, even philosophy and geology guys gave them shit.

I'm just laughing at how dad mentioned distance when talking about ND things Blake didn't really consider. I forgot that Alabama is going to move to the west coast next year.

At pOSU it was kind of assumed that if you couldn't handle Accounting, you went to Business, if you couldn't handle Business you went to Marketing, if you couldn't handle Marketing you went to Communications, and if you couldn't handle that you went home. So basically everyone here is on the same page: it's at the bottom of the totem poll.

I will say though that communications isn't that bad if you're planning on going to grad school for something useful. Plenty of them do that.

That whole interview is a crash course in platitudes and bullshit. So much faux justification going on.

Could've left it short and said "Blake committed too early, decided he wanted to check out other places, and really just wants to play big time football at the place that gives him the best chance to play/win/get to the NFL. And he felt Bama gives him that opportunity."

Is Geology known as a major full of fuck-ups? The only geology majors I know were really outdoorsy, work-in-the-field kind of guys but they were hard workers and really successful. If in fact, they do carry a label, I never caught on.

Philosophy on the other hand is extremely variable. It can be one of the most rigorous programs with it's majority rooted in logic & argumentation and also offering a solid framework for study of language itself. However, my own interaction with philosophy majors leaves a lot to be desired.

I often wish I had multiple minors stacked on my major. Philosophy would've been one of them.

From my experiences, marketing is right there with communications as far as difficulty goes. Majoring in marketing meant you party every night lol. I didn't major in either, but had many friends who did and their courses seemed easy.

I know two from Minnesota that are doing very well working short weeks in North Dakota (Bakken Shale). Small sample size but true stories.

That was Management during my time at ND. Marketing was one you could skate by in if you really wanted, but the professors did a pretty good job of making sure GPAs reflected it.

Actually, it was if you couldn't handle communications you went to Cleveland St.....followed by prison.

Geology just gets a bad rep because of "Rocks for Jocks." But that's just one class, the major itself is actually well respected within academia.

Don't fuck around with Geology. It's the silent killer. Lulls you to sleep with it's boringness as an 8:30 AM class and then is all BAM! I'M A REAL COURSE WITH HARD TESTS!

Can't even imagine what it's like to major in that. I only had to take one geology course and one geotechnical engineering course... if you're looking for a holistic substitute for Ambien those are it. You get a masters in something geology related and you can make a fortune in the energy sector.

I took a course called simply, "Holistics 101" once as a filler class my senior year. It was in an audotorium and the flower child professor had us do a 15 minute "personal reflection time" at the beginning of class. This is where she turned down the lights and made us listen to whale sounds or some shit like that.

The class was M, W and F at 7:30am. I fell asleep cold every class and just started skipping the Friday session, as it was a lost cause.

Yeah I rag on geology guys but it is a legit science. Most of the guys I know and work with (geotech and soils guys) are solid and respectable but during college the geology guys were the first at the kegs and the last to leave and were all surly and outdoorsy. Good peeps. The philosophy guys were a bunch of stoners. Still good peeps. The Communications people were like the Delta Tau Chi from Animal House

I had to take Intro to Geology (easy), Environmental Geology (tough), and Geotech I and II (real tough work and tests, class was so boring, lab ridiculously hard).

I knew that I majored wrong... I should have been a Biology major with a minor in philosopy...

I was a class short of adding a Geology minor onto the diploma.... The guys I went through the department with were the beard chewin', wool socked & Birkenstock types. I walked out of lab on Friday....and they were no where to be found till Monday lecture.

I had a college teammate out here in Cali who was a Geology major and we all laughed at him. We are not laughing anymore. He was awarded several 7 figure jobs by Prez Obama's stimulus "shovel ready projects." All he did was go survey the land to approve future builds.

It just sucks too because Blake's dad was kind of known as a helicopter parent.

It looks like Rosen is tearing it up in Oregon. So would you guys still
Take Blake over Rosen??? Rosen is the obvious choice.

Reasonable people can disagree, but I would happily delete the last month and a half (regarding Blake) and be excited to still have him.
