Obviously details are still cloudy, but if this is an academic issue, it's fixable (assuming Sykes wants to fix it). He'd have to sit a year to transfer, right, and could well have redshirted anyway. Is it possible he's back in line by spring ball? Or is this a separation from the university sort of thing?
Just really hoping its not Tee Shepherd all over again. That was a mess for all involved.

I'm telling you right now, this is the kind of bullshit that will cause Brian Kelly to quit. This would drive me batshit crazy if I was the coach.

I cannot even fathom how something like this happens.

You should see the ISD board. People calling for the admissions department to be fired for negligent admission. Ridiculous.

2 cases in 3 years...there might be really good reason for people to be pissed. This has got to open the university up to some kind of court case is somebody really wanted to push it.

What do you think happened that's causing you to react like that? Best I can tell, nobody knows WTF is going on.

situation sucks big time and its a blow to lose Skyes, sad thing is too he is best mates with Morgan and we all want him to hit the ground running at ND and become a starter at MLB. Hopefully this doesn't affect him also

If he's looking at FBS schools then it doesn't sound like an eligibility thing.

It's probably as simple as him feeling overwhelmed by his responsibilities. Lord knows college was a bit of an adjustment for me.

EDIT: typing on a phone sucks.

You're talking about a guy who was all-ND and wanted the offer badly and got it and has been nothing but loyal... never stepped a toe out of line and to my knowledge hasn't screwed up anything since he's been on campus... and you're going to pull the rug out from under him? When many other schools would have no problem with his academic profile?

I'm fucking embarrassed with my University right now unless there is something part of the picture I don't know yet.

He's recently followed IU's defensive coordinator and head coach on Twitter, as well as Mizzou's graduate assistant defensive coach. All are probably on the hunt already.

Is that not a recruiting/NCAA violation of some sort?

Edit: For them to contact him, if they did.

This stuff is getting out of control. Feel bad for Nile. How does this only come up now? Outrageous.

Should have been resolved months ago.

Fire. Everyone.

I usually have no reservations getting out the pitchforks and whipping up all the people I know who donate far more $$ than me... but these people might be evaluating my kid's application some day so I'm gonna sit this one out.

Are you hearing that ND is pushing him out?

Shouldn't be able to accept someone's NLI unless they are THROUGH admissions. You SHOULD NOT be able to come back in JUNE!!!! and say "oh yeah... sooooo... ummm..."

IMO this won't be a big loss for ND. Don't get me wrong I loved this pickup at the time but IMO with the switch from the 3-4 to the 4-3 left him without a position at ND.

He was no longer a fit for ND, IMO.

No, you can't have conversations soliciting or inquiring with an enrolled student-athlete. If there are PMs or express reference, then yea.

Unless something big were those conversations it would prob be at most a minor infraction

Some poster on ISD is saying ACT score. Who freaking knows. He says he is still a student though.

Just frustrating to see a kid bounce before he even gets to fall camp

Yup. It's a joke. Never, EVER should get to this point. Just a terrible look for ND and a bad situation for everyone involved.

This, Tee, the EV fiasco - just a lot of unprofessional / shitty work coming from the ND admission office lately regarding the football team.

Rumor is he (retroactively?) didn't clear admissions.

Ah, then I am pretty much 100% in agreement here.

If they brought him to SB and there is no NCAA barrier to having him then it's total BS to pull the rug out from under him now.

Is it possible that ND granted him admission contingent on some summer school class grade or something? It didn't come back good enough so he couldn't stay?

Maybe the alternative was either deny him outright or give him contingent admission?

If that's the case, I think I like the contingent admission policy better but Jesus tits can we please stop looking like the biggest jackasses in CFB.

EDIT: little late as that appears what happened.

Again, this seems like the sort of thing that's fixable. Hang out at home this fall. Take the ACT again, or Spanish, or whatever it is. He probably won't be able to play this season anywhere, so why not come back to Notre Dame?
Unless, of course, Sykes has the (completely understandable) reaction of being done with the place.

Rack Em has a very good point. That could very much so be what happened.

If I want to neg recruit ND, I would just point to this case x100.

Look... non-qualifiers happen all the time. USC used to have 2 or 3 of these types of cases a year. Kid gets into summer camp and they have no idea if they can actually get him into school.

But most of the time its a case of meeting NCAA minimums. Maybe ND told him straight up he had to have an ACT of X and he just got his scores back and he missed the mark. But if this is some subjective line in the sand "minimum" our admissions set and not a NCAA, then fuck you ND. Do the Stanford approach if you're going to be hardasses and don't let a kid sign unless he's clear. Letting him sign and then going "whoops" IS NOT OK!!!

Oh, and take our grad rate down another couple % points.

Or we accepted his letter of intent in February and then he slacked off the rest of the semester. He had 3 months of school left still that was out of admissions control.

Let's say he failed to meet NCAA requirements... is there any reason ND can't let him stay in school but ineligible for football that year?

ND would have known his final semester grades far before now. Graduation was 6 weeks ago for goodness sake. This is all bullshit and super freaking shady. Shit like this will deter top talent from coming here.

Possibly, but that seems unlikely because he was really looking for that ND offer.
