Kid has literally come out of nowhere and blown up on the camp circuit.

Has never played a high school game on the defensive side of the ball. Has played entirely at WR/TE up until a few weeks ago.

Supposedly grew up in Lima, OH and is a pOSU fan.

Position change leads to recruiting momentum for Wayne's Robertson - News-Sentinel.com

Auston Robertson admits he was initially against the position switch he made barely a month ago.

After all, what 6-foot-5, 235-pound wide receiver accustomed to having the ball in his hands wants to instead put his hand on the ground in the trenches at defensive end?

“I didn't like it at first,” said Robertson, a junior-to-be at Wayne. “(AWP strength coach) Kevin Bush kept persuading me, telling me how I'm good at receiver, but great at defensive end.”

While being a tall wide receiver wins you a lot of battles with defensive backs, Robertson's skill set was simply not being maximized at the position.

“He has great athletic ability,” AWP Sports President Michael Ledo said. “But the thing you saw is that he had a difficult time making adjustments to the ball in the air.

“So we said, 'Let's have him put his hand in the dirt. Let's make him a (Jadeveon) Clowney.'”

Robertson's stock has soared ever since. He currently holds scholarship offers from Toledo, Akron and Indiana, but many more are likely to follow. His performance on the camp circuit so far this summer has earned him interest from the likes of Ohio State, Michigan and Notre Dame.

Robertson visited Michigan on Monday with AWP teammates Austin Mack of Bishop Luers and Justin Tranquill of Carroll. He was also invited to Notre Dame's Irish Invasion camp this weekend, but will miss it due to being in Florida at the IMG 7v7 National Championship with AWP.

Robertson is ranked No. 89 nationally in the Class of 2016 by 247Sports, a national Internet recruiting service. He rates as a four-star prospect and the No. 3 defensive end in the country.

Not bad for someone who did not want to move positions.

“He wasn't very happy with it at first,” Ledo said. “When you are 6-5, 235 (pounds) the argument is you could be one of the top tight ends in the country. It just wasn't naturally happening for him.”

The transition has been more than just an adjustment in alignments and objective. Robertson has had to learn footwork as well as how to use his hands to engage and shed blockers. But what he lacks in refined defensive end skills he more than makes up for in raw talent and ceiling.

At the RAS Camp last week at Ohio State, Robertson began to feel comfortable at the position while battling some of the nation's best.

“The toughest thing is the mentality (of the position),” Ledo said. “When you bring somebody to the defensive side of the ball, it is a whole different mindset.”

Robertson is adjusting to the new position well thus far, but will face the next test in the fall when he competes at defensive end in full pads for the first time.

Ledo isn't worried.

“When a kid like him goes to a Michigan camp or RAS camp he is going against 6-foot-5, 6-foot-6 offensive linemen that hold 10, 15 or 20 (scholarship) offers, he is not going to line up against that (kind of kid) in Fort Wayne,” Ledo said. “If he can beat that kid in that situation, he comes back home fairly confident that there aren't many kids who are going to be able to physically match up with him.”

Robertson plans to visit Alabama next month and hopes to make a return trip to Michigan in the near future, continuing the momentum that has been building since the position switch.

“It is very surprising, it just doesn't feel real,” Robertson said. “It's all happening so fast.”

It's not much.

It was a great visit; he learned a lot about the academics and history of ND. The staff really likes his pass rush and they told him he can do some things on the field that the current Irish players can't even do (idk if that's good or bad).

He admits that football is pretty new to him and is still relying on natural instinct

Unless this offer is not commitable, then he must have put on quite a show for them to offer considering he hasn't played a down of HS football at DE. Normally ND would tell a recruit that they would wait to see how he performs in real games at his new position.

I will take the post earlier at face value when they told him he can do some things on the field that the current Irish players can't even do.

Ledo from AWP said regarding the position switch, lets make him Clowney and put his hand in the dirt. We can only hope.

Auston Robertson Offered By Notre Dame

Fort Wayne (Ind.) Wayne 2016 defensive end Auston Robertson has only been playing defensive end for about a month, dominating on the camp circuit.

A tight end last fall, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Robertson looks like he’s been playing the position all his life.

Notre Dame saw serious potential, having him in camp earlier this week, and on Friday they extended a scholarship offer.

Defensive line coach Mike Elston gave Robertson the good news, as Notre Dame joins Indiana, Akron and Toledo in giving an early full-ride.

“I’m keeping my options open, but I do really like their facilities and the academics, and how everything is setup, and they have a lot to offer,” Robertson said.

Robertson added that he’s noticed Notre Dame has recruited well in Fort Wayne, landing two in the last two recruiting classes he knows in Drue Tranquill in 2014 and Jaylon Smith in 2013. Like those two, Robertson trains at Athletes With Purpose in the Fort Wayne area. The Irish also offered Robertson’s friend in fellow 2016 area standout Austin Mack from Fort Wayne (Ind.) Bishop Luers.

Adapting to his new position, Robertson thinks Elston could help him continue to develop.

“He taught me a lot of stuff,” Robertson said.

In July, Robertson plans to attend Friday Night Lights at Ohio State. He added that he may get out to Penn State as well.

Getting in on him early I think will be a huge factor here. Also ISD had an article on him today and it discussed transcripts being looked at. Think about how huge it is that we are looking at kids as early as there FR and SO years. Meaning foreign language classes will no longer be the derailment of a possible commitment down the stretch. That has been a thorn in our side for awhile now and this will be huge moving forward. The article made it clear that he needs to fulfill the requirement, but he fully intends to do just that. That has stuck with me all day since reading, and I cannot believe how much more further along we are now that Kelly is fixing these snags that have kept us from getting back in top. I really think Kelly should get a lot more credit from the fan base. If he keeps this up, we will not only get back to the big game, but we will win it again.

Dude's skinny looking isn't he?

In his defense he is going into his junior year. Plenty of time to get weight. I mean a lot of it is bad weight, but Cornell put on about 50 pounds in a year. AWP has phenomenal record of getting kids ready for college so I wouldnt be concerned about weight.

I agree. After missing on a number of top recruits several years ago, it didn't take Kelly long to know he had to start showing interest very early.
