People have danced around it slightly, but my guess is Gunner has seen Zaires skill set up close now and made the educated choice to move on. Otherwise he would likely be staying.

Kid wants on the field, can't blame him. It also says he has bigger dreams than just a college degree.

If we get through this year without a golson injury, I'm not worried. Next year, Malik will be a ra freshman, with essentially 2 years in the system since he's an ee.

This makes it crucial that Hendrix sticks around for a 5th year.

Worst case scenario, Rees and Hendrix are both gone after this year, and Golson and Zaire are the only options in 2014. BK will have to recruit a QB hard for this cycle now as well.

In 2014, we could see: 1. Golson 2. Zaire 3. Freshman.

Makes me wonder how Pete Carrol got all of those highly-rated QBs to stick around and wait their turn at USC.

All the money their QBs were receiving from the boosters.

Guy here is saying he has really good sources that Rocky Top or Cincy are the the likely destinations. We shall see

Pete Carroll got them to stick around because they knew they'd be multi-year starters. The issue here is that Golson and Kiel are 1 year apart and it doesn't look like Golson is the kind of prospect to turn pro early.

Exactly. Golson may well develop and be a stud, but he's not probably a huge pro prospect, partly due to his limited stature. Who knows.

Frankly, this would have worked out beautifully if Dayne had been as good as he should have been and Clausen hadn't left early. We had a good QB sequence going at that point.

I trust Brian Kelly.

The most miffing "QB sticking around" I've seen in recent memory is Devin Gardner at Michigan. #1 QB recruit told to play WR while Denard throws him the ball? GTFO. Shocking that he stayed with the Wolverines.

What a slap in the face that must have been.

Good luck to Kiel. I wish him the best unless he plays against ND. Then I hope his only completions are to ND. That is all.

I think next year is fine. Rees and Hendrix are 2-3 and Zaire is getting experience on scout team. The following year is what would worry me. Golson, RS frosh Zaire, and true freshmen. That's a bit thin for my liking.

NOTE: That's assuming Hendrix finishes the degree and goes somewhere for a 5th year. Might not be an assumption I can make.

You mean like last season with rees, rs- golson and true frrosh kiel?

Gunner always reminded me of the big blond kid Lou recruit who was a top QB but wasn't the right guy to run an option offense. He transferred to THE OSU and had a respectable college career and disappeared. (Sorry can't recall the name.) bottom line is that his transferring was a win win. He never would have played over T Rice, and ND was just fine for the next 5 years.

Best of luck Gunner. Hopefully you find peace and happiness in life, and find a place you can settled down.

I really don't understand this especially with the family ties. Yes, we all know EG is the starter. We also know he leaves the pocket a lot and at 190 lbs does not have the body to take a beating. Last year alone he was knocked out of at least two games due to injury. I really don't think we will ever know what these kids are thinking and I am all for going to where you will see the field, but I could see that being at ND next year.

I've long thought we wouldn't be able to keep both Golson and Kiel past this season. 5:s: QBs don't ride the bench for 2 consecutive years, and Golson has too much talent to simply roll over for Kiel.

This is the definition of a "First World Problem" in CFB. Will be very interested to see where he lands.

I didn't remember them decommitting from 2 different schools, including pulling an Anzalone and leaving LSU the day before he was supposed to enroll. That kind of difficulty with decision making shows why he transferred and why he looked awful in his last game in semistate as a senior.

Tell us about how gay he is too.

Exactly. We all knew what kind of situation we were at when it came to QB. And we hoped Gunner seeing "meaningful" time as a second string QB would be enough to keep him here until Golson's graduation, but the writing was on the wall. No tremendous surprise here.

Kiel is an absolute talent. He's going to go somewhere and play soon, or so are his hopes.

This isn't really the staff's fault. When a guy doesn't want to stay, he doesn't want to stay.

I'm not sure it's been mentioned (I know you guys will hate me, but I haven't read the past 20 pages of this thread.), but is there any info about where he is going? When TP told me about this earlier today, my response was, "IU?" Nothing else. So that's my guess.

I'd think this news might change that, no?
Rees will be done. We won't recruit more than one QB to enter in '14. And we'd want four on the roster. Hendrix will probably never play meaningful minutes, but he would probably at least get offered a fifth year. He's not going to the NFL, so why not take it?

Hendrix is pre-med. I doubt he'd forgo medical school to play as a third string safety valve. I could see Tommy getting a 5th for depth. He is a fantastic back-up and will only be improving as time goes on.

You can't see any scenario where a starting QB plays all the snaps for his team during a season? Really? Can't see ANY scenario where that happens even though that's the case for dozens of teams every single season?

And what happens when the QB's helmet comes off after a sack? Plus EG isn't Peyton Manning. He's going to move around the pocket, throw on the run, and take off with the ball. He's going to land awkwardly at some point. He's going to get the wind knocked out of him. So to answer your question, no, I don't see any scenario where Tommy doesn't play next year.

True. What bums me out is that Gunner has decided to transfer before spring practice. Who knows what might have happened this spring? EG could even get hurt, God forbid. I really wanted Gunner to get a chance to show what he could do this spring, and if he wanted to transfer after that, best of luck. Sorry it won't work out that way. Gunner came and went without anyone really getting to see what he can do.
