Fantastic interview with Coach Martin looking back on his time at Notre Dame. Didn't know much about the man but reading this really made me like him. Some highlights:

TP: Four years after coming to Notre Dame, do you still view the place and the program the same way?
CM: Yeah, oh yeah. I still view it as a place where they try to do it right every day. Do they do everything right every single day? No one does and no one can. But the standards, what happens with Everett Golson, other decisions like that…

With Everett, they made the right decision for the kid. I had people say to me, ‘Oh, we should have swept this under the rug.’ No, we’re helping the kid. We’re not helping the kid that year; we’re helping the kid for the rest of his life because we wanted the kid to be accountable for his actions.

TP: Is being the head coach at Notre Dame the perfect scenario for you?
CM: That would probably be the only goal I have in coaching. Other than that, I’ve never really chased jobs. I’m happy where I am today and during my previous stops in coaching. I always like where I’m at. I’ve never really had a bad job. I love where I’m at now. I don’t concern myself with jobs other than the one I have.

But if you ask me if there’s one job I’d like to have, it would be Notre Dame.

Also was asked about his favorite players to coach during his time at ND and specifically mentioned Harrison Smith, Theo Riddick, and, in particular, RJ Blanton. Still talks with RJ regularly and just raved about him in his answer. Martin also mentioned Nelson Agholor and Ty Isaac as the two recruits it hurt most to lose. Maybe Ty can ease the pain a little with his upcoming decision?

I'm late in the response, but damn if that isn't a great statement. What does it tell the kid when you try to sweep his mistake under the rug? "It's okay to screw up in life, because someone can always try to sweep it under the rug so you never deal with the consequences." It really is about making a 40 year decision when you come to ND. Some schools just want to use these kids to make money, but making a tough decision like that helps the kid make the right decisions later in life.

Great story, I hope everyone reads it. I really hope Martin is successful and he has a chance to lead ND.

Best of luck to Martin. Really like the guy. Most noteworthy tidbit that I saw in the article was that Miami is paying him $400k and said he was making $650k as OC at ND.

Martin's Miami squad finished the season 6-6 after starting 0-6. Bowl eligible too, heck of a job

QB change helped the turn around.

Ball State sucking at playing games past the first quarter this year helped as well.

Damn you, Chuck.

It's a sad day when there is a little bit of trash talk on the HawkTalk forums about the Red Hawks coming to SB next year...

Well......when they win, they can kindly leave their HC behind, and take Kelly with them

Chuck just got a commitment from 3 star 2019 QB from MO, Tyler Gabbert (brother of Blaine). Redhawks are1st in the MAC for the 2019 class rankings and doing well nationally also.

Miami is 0-3 heading into their MAC season opener. They might be down 9 players for Bowling Green because of injuries.

That kind of trend is pointing to Martin being the ‘former’ HC at Miami, OH.

Before Martin came on board, his predecessor (plus interim coach after that guy got fired) won 8 games over a span of 3 seasons. Under Martin:

2-10
3-9
6-7
5-7

Also, their schedule gets a bit easier now that they are moving into conference play. Their losses were to Marshall, Cincinnati, and Minnesota. The latter two were essentially* road games.

*The Cincinnati game was a neutral site but in the city of Cincinnati.

Martin is easy to root for. It’s always a gamble to take a MAC job b/c it could derail the path to a P5 gig. If he’s gonna make that leap, it may be now or never as he’s not getting any younger.

He should stay and enjoy Oxford. Good college town that's easy to recruit middle of the pack dudes. Beautiful campus and good tradition there.
