Mark it. He will be the Mariano Riviera of the NFL. Whenever RGIII takes too many crushings, Rees will come in and close them out.

And it's not like Rees has beat out dozens and dozens of quarterbacks over his career. I think he's a smart kid with good quarterback intelligence. To suggest he's some whiz kid--who couldn't even protect the ball in college--who will float into the NFL and be a teacher to established quarterbacks doesn't seem realistic at all.

How many other Division 1 QBs did he need to beat out? He beat out several guys that were certainly all more athletically gifted than him and had scholarship offers to other programs. I'm not saying he's a whiz kid, but he must have a good understanding of the game if he's beating out guys that are more athletically gifted.

People act like Rees threw an absurd number of interceptions last season. He threw 13 on 414 attempts, thats not that atrocious in my opinion when you consider a few of those were out of his hands. For starters, why our offensive coordinator decided to ask Rees to throw 414 times last season is beyond me. Rees has always done better when we've brought a strong running game to complement the fact he's not mobile. I was calling for it last off season, and of course it didn't really happen and we struggled at times offensively. We should have been focusing on the run game behind the experienced OL and the talented backs, using play action for big gains. In any case, while Tommy certainly made some bone headed plays at times, 13 Ints isn't that bad given the number of passes. He's no Clausen, but you don't get those kinds of QBs each year. Only 20 QBs passed more times than Tommy last year, and all of them threw double digit Ints except for 5 of them. Bridgewater had the fewest at 4 Ints, and that was against some pretty weak competition.

Ok lets take a step back & look at what hes up against.
Tommys a third/fourth stringer right??? So that means
he'll be playing against the #1 defense thats going to
be throwing everything at him(blitzs)& we all know hes
not that good against athlectic defenses. So unless some1
get injured or cut what are the odds that tommy boy makes
the team.....

Huh? Every third string QB in the NFL practices against the starting defense. That's their job, to run the scout team offense. And every one of them is outmatched. Coaches know this. So third string QBs aren't really judged on that but on their ability to come in and run the team's actual offense if needed. I'd be surprised if Rees actually wins a spot - because the Redskins have three established potential starters at QB - but it won't have anything to do with his having to play against the starters on defense.

Knowing the offense??? You also got to be able to make plays dont you think. Knowing the offense & balling up or throwing the ball away aint gone cut it.

NFL Minimum Salaries & Veteran Discounts | The Daily Spot

McCoy stands to make $730K at league minimum this year. A rookie minimum would be $420K. Pretty big delta for someone who is unlikely to see the field? Most teams are only dressing 2 QBs anyway aren't they? That means your practice squad guy can be snatched up by another team so you better see real value there long term if you are going to put #3 on the roster.

The Anatomy of a 53-Man Roster in the NFL | Bleacher Report

Then you have UDFA contracts paying WAY less than league minimum if they are on practice squad. This article gives some good insight:

Dallas Cowboys Undrafted Free Agents: How Much Will They Get Paid? - Blogging The Boys

So Tommy's real immediate opportunity is to become a practice squad QB making maybe $100k, saving the Redskins $600k versus what they would keep McCoy around for. I don't think that is likely to happen so Tommy can take his all expense paid, NFL boot camp experience with him for the rest of his life. Not a bad deal either!

the main goal for tommy should be to try and stick in the NFL for 3 years and qualify for the player's pension IMO..

Practice squad isn't eligible for that are they?

no they got to get called up for an active game to qualify

(c) Any player who is elevated from the Practice Squad to the affected club's 53-player Active/Inactive List for the game will be paid 1/17th of the Paragraph 5 minimum salary for Active/Inactive List players with the same number of credited seasons. Any games for which a player is elevated in this manner to the 53-player Active/Inactive List would count for purposes of earning a Credited Season for both minimum salary and pension credit and an Accrued Season for purposes of free agency, even though player is playing under the aforementioned addendum to his Practice Player Contract.

Edit: Detroit Lions kept Jahvid Best on the PUP list in his final year as a pro so he could qualify for the pension:

Haha that's the perfect role. The mediocre-as-hell QB that throws too many INTs and gets too much credit for wins.

Before I get negrepped like crazy, that was a joke.

You should have added "immobile." I'm a Giants fan, and I don't think it's that far off the truth, lol. Eli's definitely had his moments, though, and two great playoff runs capped by two Super Bowl wins cancels out a lot of regular season frustration.

Tyler Thigpen > Any QB drafted this year. Gotcha! Good luck with that

LOL yeah ok buddy. Obviously what I was getting at. There's a pretty big difference between the way Thigpen played and the Redskins 3rd-stringer Colt McCoy played. And yeah, I'd say it would be stupid to assume any QB drafted this year would be teaching even Thigpen about NFL schemes.

That didn't take long. Needs to find a coaching job ASAP. Like HS or a GA position.

RGIII probably couldn't handle the QB controversy.

It was a good run for Tommy. Grab a clipboard son. The glory days are over. I think he could make a good coach so maybe we havn't heard the last of touchdown Tommy.

On one hand I feel bad for Tommy, can't remember someone who's done more with less. On the other hand, there's no doubt in my mind that he's going to be extremely successful at whatever he chooses to do from here on out.
His winning attitude will take him farther than his arm ever could.

Any ND fan should know this. I don't think I've ever been more frustrated watching the offense than in those Pitt and ASU games. Good Luck Tommy but.. See ya.

Good coach?

Good coach?

A lot of people over the years have said they think Tommy will make a good coach.

Two questions...

Why?

Has he ever expressed interest?

I ask because I don't see a coach in him at all. A coach is a leader and a teacher. Did you ever feel like the team was rallying around his leadership? Even when he had good moments, I don't feel like others around him looked up to him.

I think people say this because he could 'read a defense' but any kid with Madden or EA Sports NCAA football can read a defense.

People say Tommy would make a good coach because his dad was a bigtime college football/NFL coach and personnel man, so football analysis is the family business, and by all accounts Tommy was an absolute beast in the film room and a great help to other quarterbacks, such as Everett, who were trying to learn the defense, despite the fact that he was actively competing with them. It is 100% false that Tommy never distinguished himself as a teacher. Kelly repeatedly said that Tommy was a great teammate and a leader as well, for whom every player in the locker room would "go to the wall" (whatever that means; Kelly's phrase, not mine).
