It's not that I'm sensitive to anything involving Winston. It's just annoying to hear people call him dumb for the way he talks or convict him of rape based on what they read on the internet or make jokes because his father believes he needs security.

My point tonight was simply about going back to school as a Heisman winner. A lot of guys win the Heisman and go right to the NFL. They never have to attend another class after they've won the Heisman. They are "adults" and about to become "professionals". But lately guys like Tebow, Manziel and Winston won a Heisman and then had to go back to school. I've seen first hand what winning the Heisman means for these guys. It's unlike any other experience student-athletes must go through and you better believe they need security and protection.

But, I'm no voice of reason. I'll let you guys get back to bashing Mr. Winston for wanting his son protected while under FSU's care as a college student. I get it. He's a celebrity. Let's all poke fun and laugh at the idiot rapist who needs a babysitter to make sure he doesn't steal crab legs. That's a lot more interesting narrative.

You've missed the point.

If it was limited to JW not being safe and being mobbed everywhere, then I would agree with you. But the way the articles are written (which may be biased, but that is what we have to go on at this point) seem to lead one to believe the elder Winston wants someone around to prevent JW from doing something stupid. In the two years he has been on the FSU campus, he has been on the police's radar three times.

The celebrity status of football players at schools is nothing new and is not limited to Heisman winners. There is no doubt that JW and JFF played for schools that are rabid football fans that treated them like gods. But they are not the only ones that have to live thru this. Why don't we hear anything about Braxton Miller in Cbus? Or what about Marcus Mariota at Oregon? We can even extend it to basketball. Cody Zeller went back to IU forgoing a top ten pick. He was just fine. Why is the case of JFF and JW different? I have a hard time believing that simply winning the Heisman is the difference.

We all realize winning a Heisman is a huge weight on his shoulders.
Hell...just being a starter at FSU has gotta be a massive weight that most of us haven't, nor ever will experience. Can't even imagine doing it at that age.

I would argue that being a star D-IA QB is SIGNIFICANTLY less of a weight than being a soldier, sailor, airman, or marine........ and a lot of 18 and 19 year old kids pull that off, every day.

The Dad's statement makes no sense, unless he is trying to say that, if his son had a 24/7 handler, then he would not have gotten himself into trouble. The obvious inference there is that the handler would be helping him make good decisions. I'm not even sure you can call NOT stealing food from a grocery store(unless you are literally starving) making a good decision. That's like saying that he makes a good decision, every day that he DOESN'T murder someone?

Not specifically towards Winston, but the long list of CFB players that get arrested yearly. But imagine of they were like Rees. No athleticism and couldn't outrun the police. Their arrest record would be 3 times as long.

Could you imagine Rees' rap sheet if he didn't have Carlo's boys protecting him??

College athlete wants to be paid (in addition to free education). College athlete needs a handler to be "safe" (aka not get in trouble). Lol.

The problem is he didn't ask for a "handler" for his son until after the crab legs incident. If he had asked for it right after the spring semester started when his son returned to campus then most of us would have been more sympathetic, but alas timing is everything.

Maybe he doesn't need a handler. Maybe he needs a better dad who taught him right from wrong before he went to college.

NDWorld, I get your point, and I basically agree. It is absolutely logical to devote extra resources in terms of security, support and supervision to a kid after he wins the Heisman.

But I feel like you might be reading stuff into this thread that isn't there? Or at least not in the posts that appeared to spark your outrage. The article we were originally responding to was this one:
Jameis Winston's dad wants FSU to provide 24/7 handler | FOX Sports on MSN

I just re-read it to make sure I didn't miss something the first time, and it TOTALLY reads as if Winston's father is saying that Winston needs a handler so he doesn't steal crab legs. No one should need a handler for that reason. There's plenty of trouble over dumb shit that will get me sympathy from high-profile college athletes, such as for example, trouble with girls or even barfights, depending on the circumstances, because I understand that there's a sense in which these kids become targets. I'm sure there are other circumstances I'm not even aware of in which high-profile college athletes deserve our sympathy. But stealing seafood? Not buying that one. And I think that's all anyone was saying before you got on your high horse.

I wish I had a handler to prevent me from hooking up with ugly chicks sometimes.

Since it only happens to ONE student per year, do you suggest that ONLY Heisman winners get around the clock security? What about the Outland winner? Or the Maxwell winner? The Nagurski winner?

It is entirely unreasonable. He is not a foreign dignitary, and last I checked, Heisman winners never received security before, certainly not Tebow.

This is just making excuses for his actions, period.

You're sadly mistaken. Tebow had security and "handlers" aplenty and they did a pretty good job. Bob Tebow made sure of it, he just didn't talk to USA Today about it.

The problem is he didn't ask for a "handler" for his son until after the crab legs incident. If he had asked for it right after the spring semester started when his son returned to campus then most of us would have been more sympathetic, but alas timing is everything.

How do you know this? How do you know Mr. Winston didn't sit down with FSU brass the day after he won the Heisman and come to an agreement about how they would handle his notoriety moving forward? I assure you they did. It basically says so in the USA Today article.

I'm not on a high horse nor am I outraged. All I said was some of you were underestimating what winning the Heisman means for a student-athlete who must return to school and, as a parent, I would ask for the same things Mr. Winston has. You made it about crab legs with your response and the Bama boys chimed in with not giving him a free pass (which I agree with) and how accepting a division 1 scholarship and winning the Heisman are part of the package (which is ridiculous). No one cared to address my point. Pitchforks have been drawn and apparently that's how this thread is going to go. I'll see myself out.

I would encourage you to read the original USA Today story instead of Fox Sports version of it. They can TOTALLY make it read however they want and put funny words like "handler" in the title.

I am consistently surprised by grown men being surprised by the actions of a teenager thrown into the spotlight and struggling to handle it.

I did not "make it about crab legs." As I pointed out above, the article that stimulated the original discussion suggested that the crab legs incident was evidence that Jameis needed a handler. If you thought that article was incomplete or misleading, why not just say that? I feel like unnecessary tension was introduced into this thread. But maybe I misread. Anyway, we're clear now.

USA Today

You'll just have to take my word for it. Or not, that's fine too.

I'm not saying I don't believe you but I'd like a little more than "take my word for it." I know that you have some relationship/conversation with Winston but where do you get your Tebow information from?

If you thought that article was incomplete or misleading, why not just say that? I don't understand the attitude, I really don't.

I'm happy you edited your post as I am not incensed in any way. We're having a discussion and if you feel I've given you attitude, or outraged, or on my high horse, I apologize.

Someone posted the article which was followed by several "attacks" on Mr. Winston and his parenting. This was my response:

I think some of you may underestimate the impact of winning the Heisman trophy for some of these younger guys who are forced to return to school due to the NFL draft eligibility requirements (i.e. 3 years removed from HS). The added attention is not easy to deal with. If I were his parents, I'd be asking for the same thing.

My subsequent responses were consistent. You brought the article up again and I told you what I thought of it.

Its bullshit he dad even made these comments. If you agree or don't agree Jameis is an ADULT. At some point he needs to start acting like one. If not he will be just like T.O., Chad Johnson and the other knuckle heads that keep ruining their imagine. He needs to be told either get your shit together or good bye. But we all know that won't happen. And we wonder why when they get to the next level they can't control their selves because they never had too. Makes you really think about how special players like Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck really are.

You mean that being accused of rape was not enough of a red flag to get his father to see that his son is out of control, a year BEFORE he played a real CFB game?? But after stealing some crab legs, NOW his father wants his son to have a handler?

SMH.

At this point, you have to imagine he is seriously hurting his value to future employers. Would anyone be shocked if he did something insanely stupid and/or criminal after you signed him?

the NFL does not give two craps about off-the field incidents as long as you are not goofy on twitter.

I am fully convinced a person could do pretty much anything but kill a cop and still be able to play in the NFL.
