The late eighties were the best for action adventure, weren't they?

Yep. The late 80s to the early-mid 90s were the golden age of action flicks.

Had this same debate in facebook. I think 94 is the best but 84 is best for entertaining blockbuster types. Gaves us Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Beverly Hills Cop, Karate Kid, Revenge of the Needs, Tenple of Doom, Red Dawn, Sixteen Candles, The Terminator, The Natural, Nightmare on Elm St, Never Ending Story, Romancing the Stone, and more!

I think it really comes down to personal preference of films.

1939 has repeatedly been acknowledged as Hollywood's best year. I started to post this yesterday but figured it was pointless. Most of the posts here are along the lines of those in the thread for Best Athlete, etc, those with limited reach only think as far as their own experience.

Don't point that finger at me! 1994 has three movies considered to be among the best ever made.

I bolded the movies made after 1980 that made the list. Seems a bit slanted to older movies...

What, no People's Choice awards?

As I think the American Film Institute List is skewed, as Buster maintains, I cannot give any credibility to a list that puts Dark Knight and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly ahead of Citizen Kane and Casablanca.

Buster's list still does bring up another weakness, in my opinion, about the AFI list. No Chaplin in the top 50?

I probably have seen all of the movies listed so far, and as far as it goes for me, when I watch an old hollywood movie, such as the one's Bogs and BGIF have discussed, I find it very hard to put into true context. Several of those I have had to watch discussions (from critics or movie buffs) about them for proper context and I do get an appreciation for them but I find I am mostly biased towards the movies that are more modern. For the most part I have to accept the fact that Gone with the Wind and Citizen Kane are regarded as great movies, even though I don't think I could ever watch them again because I just fail to grasp what makes them great. My significant other makes me watch old hollywood movies regularly so I will keep trying.

Further those lists have a significant hollywood bias as well. I actually really love old martial arts/samurai movies more than I do old hollywood movies. Aru kengo no shogai (1959) was absolutely wonderful.

1976:
Taxi Driver
Carrie
The Bad News Bears
Network
King Kong
The Omen
All the President's Men
Marathon Man
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Murder by Death (Best title ever?)
Midway
The Pink Panther Strikes Again (Okay, maybe not this)
The Enforcer
Silver Streak
Mother, Jugs & Speed
Cannonball!
......and of course, the greatest movie ever made, Rocky.

The year I was born, '82, wasn't terrible either:
Blade Runner
Annie
ET
The Thing
Rocky III (I've got a prediction...pain)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Poltergeist
Ghandi
Rambo First Blood
Conan the Barbarian!
TRON
Dark Crystal
Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan!
Pink Floyd The Wall
An Officer and a Gentleman
Sophie's Choice
The Beastmaster (Okay, maybe not)
Porky's
Airplane II
Night Shift
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
Trail of the Pink Pather (j/k)
Fitzcarraldo

If you throw out the ones that were added for humor, '82 was a pretty good year.

Are you the reason that "PA ND fan" become "PandaFan?" Are you saying I need to Photoshop a ukelele into Lou's hands now?

I've seen a lot of interpretations of my screenname over the years, but never "ukulele time." I came up with it almost 20 years ago as an AOL screen name in high school, it's supposed to be "You Lookin' At Me?" It's probably time I change it.

They were certainly good, but I still prefer the Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm biased though, my parents raised me on music from the 60s, 70s, and some 80s. Queen, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, and anything else from that era was all the music that was allowed in our house and car.

This guy, he has taste in music. His Don't Stop Believin' is pretty good too. I'm listening to "Hallelujah" right now.
