hopefully we'll learn from this lesson under the new regime and we'll be able to start reeling in elite DL like we do with the OL.

the NFL pedigree we now have on defense will hopefully help with that.

So the old regime didn't reel in elite dl? Tiutt, Nix, Lynch, Isaq, Day, Jones, Rochelle, EV

If that's not elite I don't know what is.

D-line and O-line every year. That's where it all begins.

Yup, it's all about the big men. Look at Seattle tonight. They were constantly in Peyton's face with 4 men rushing, he couldn't hit anything deep because of it, all he could do was short passes.

It won't happen this year but we have signed a 5 star on the DL 3 straight seasons. We didn't do well last year but 2011 and 2012 were good recruiting years on DL. We will end up with I think 6 DL commits this season with 1 true DT, possibly 1-2 more if we get any NSD surprises. And all of them except the DT were committed to ND before Diaco left. I think we did good getting Rochell last year and if Jones can play like he did the 2nd half of the season then I think we will be fine. Nix didn't have a great sophomore season, even came close to losing his starting job to Swenke in the offseason after the 2011 season, and he had to also red shirt his freshman year. I see a lot of similarities between the 2 and think Jones could be even better if he gets his head on straight and realizes he no longer needs to worry about hurting players smaller than him. I read an article about him that said he often held back when he was younger because he was so much bigger than every other kid and was afraid he would really hurt someone. Even in high school. Big boy doesn't need to worry about that anymore. He will be going up against 300lb guards.

Also, Jones in a short time has exhibited something we have not seen in noses at ND much, lately; reach and timing. I mean Nix had a number of pass disruptions, but I think that Jones could be a bit of a specialist in this category.

Mizzou Scout update, Cage enjoyed the Mizzou visit and could see himself playing there. Sounds like the same pitch MSU and ND gave him for a PT perspective. Says all 5 teams he visited are equal, family was go over it the next couple days and announce on NSD. Was a brief or boring interview.

Translation....Missouri was okay, but didn't knock my socks off. This is a ND & MSU fight.

Will Missouri land Cage?

Mizzou got an ice storm Friday night. I'm sure Columbia was slow and it probably wasn't as much fun.

Nobody on the staff is counting Cage out and Wiltfong is "warming" to ND's chances. The visit went really well. He grew up liking ND so it was great to see everything in person. Academics could be big here and Mendoza might be the thing to convince him

What the ****? Kid grew up a Notre Dame fan and he can't decide between us and Sparty?

Something doesn't match up there.

If Sparty is recruiting you hard for your whole senior year, and ND has told you previously they didn't want you and now just jump back in late, it would probably take me a little bit to warm back up to them too

Im with you. Makes zero sense. From what I have been told, MSU academics isnt even in the remote ballpark as ND. Short of night life (compared to ND), why would you want to go to MSU?

They just won the Rose Bowl and had arguably the best defense in the country.

13-1 in 2013.
7-6 in 2012.
11-3 in 2011.
11-2 in 2010.

They might be 1-3 against Kelly, but their record is 42-12 the last four years compared to 37-15 compared to ND.

Maybe it's just me, but this is not a very big difference margin. Given that stat, I would consider it a non factor. I'm not making this decision though.

Well they also may be considered to have an easier path to the playoffs, if that's your thing.

hows it easier path? 1 still plays 4 and 2 plays 3 ... not like B16 champion gets automatic 1 spot

They get an easier path TO the playoffs, not in the playoffs. Their schedule is not nearly as tough as ND's.

I feel the same way. Any kid who has the abilities, integrity, intellect, loyalty and work ethic to make it at ND and is put in this position with the most important decision of his life, I would hope he would take his time making sure it is what he wants, that the staff answers all his questions, and weighing his options in a mature manner.
