Wouldn't be an NCAA violation until he signs his LOI.

Right now he's just a high school athlete without any contractual (LOI) ties to any school.

And, there is nothing wrong with pocketing some cash. If I recall correctly, Elam's family isn't exactly dining on lobster every night, and selling his jersey, which he is asking $300 for, is what he thinks can help out.

That's pretty irrelevant. It's about amateur status. Can't be profiting off your athletic career at any point prior or during your time as an amateur athlete in the NCAA (unless it follows some very specific exceptions). So yeah... there is "something wrong with pocketing some cash"... same logic as why you can't just take oodles of money from fans/boosters before you sign your LOI.

This is not the end of the world, just like how selling a game used jersey in college isn't the "end of the world," but he'd absolutely be on the hook for something like this when it comes time to fill out the first NCAA questionnaire he receives... and then he'll subject to penalties if he ever wants to play college football. The absolute worst thing he can do in this situation is lie about it if he put it on eBay. Simply pleading ignorance and taking it down before any items sell will get him off with less than a Mazniel. Lying to the NCAA about it could cost him some eligibility if he isn't careful.

This can't possibly be true.

I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

So high school kids can profit off their likeness and retain NCAA eligibility??? Where are the AAU basketball $20 autograph signing sessions? Why isn't every kid in America doing this?

He's completely wrong, don't worry about it. Obviously, you can't just "pocket some cash" before you sign an LOI.

He certainly looks well fed.

I may be nit-picking, but I believe you can up to eighth grade.

Yeah, there are exceptions (as was noted in the part you didn't bold lol). That might be one of them, not sure off the top of my head. The classic one is the Olympic Model.

To the discussion on Elam, selling athletic apparel to people who can presumably be considered boosters is obviously not one of those exceptions. If that was the case, every kid would sign/sell stuff on eBay and Booster X would buy it for $100k or whatever.

We all should have seen the writing on the wall when he called out Calvin Johnson for being old.

I really think that his only option here is KY. Im not going to say that "we dodged a bullet" here because the staff still pursued him, but he's one I'm glad we missed on.

Mike Frank said months ago that he didnt think he'd fit with what ND was looking for. He wouldn't say something like that without some real solid grounding. He doesn't post rumors.

Wish him the best as the "hometown hero."

It's gonna sound petty but as soon as I saw his Twitter handle I was a bit put off. Idk, I'm just weird like that.

Elam fits the mold of the big, sloppy NT that Saban likes in his 3/4 defense. Still, I have not been sold on Elam being an impact player in college. I hope he commits to UK and not Bama. I just get a feeling that he will be flipping the very burgers he is currently eating in four or five years.

i bet he will be one of those "nobody ever pushed me to do well academically" self-pity kids who blames everybody but himself.

Did anything ever happen when it was found that all of his Army AA gear was being sold on eBay a week after the game? Agree with most of you that this is one prospect we'll look back on and be glad we missed.

Don't want to sell him short as I don't really know much about him. Evidently, he comes from an environment of extreme poverty. I just hope he understands that football could be a way for him to break that cycle - through education and possibly as a career. He has been given gifts... I pray he uses them. I will be cheering for him to make it no matter where he ends up.

"So we are here with Matt Elam, he's ready to make his choice known and it comes down to three schools... Alabama, Kentucky and Yale... So Matt, who is it going to be?"
