Can we free IrishPat, fill him in on the situation, and have him call in a false bomb threat next weekend so the visit doesn't take place?

with this visit in place...at best he's considered a soft verbal and right now that's being generous with his admitted admiration toward the texas program we were aware of in regards to his recruitment from the beginning

I'm not optimistic, but let's stop crying and see what happens.

this is why holding on to guys like Yeargin are more important than we were making it out to be yesterday.

Yeah, he could have been considered a bonus at the time but things change so fast.

True, but the entire recruiting thing has gotten completely out of control over the past few years. Something has to be done.

Early signing won't fix it. Early signing doesn't mean everyone signs at that early date, so you will still have this Jan/Feb madness. Plus, early signing means that schools get to use a whole different set of ultimatums, manipulation, and leverage. I didn't get to OV to Harvard because of early signing and I'm still bitter about it. And as far as timing works, early signing doesn't make much sense for football since football is a fall sport. A lot of kids will not have had a chance to visit schools yet. That means the kids who are signing early will generally be kids who weren't going to be flight risks, or kids who were pressured into doing it and might come to regret the decision.

I fully expect him to decommit, and I hate it, but I don't blame him.

He's a Texas fan and grew up there.

Imagine growing up in Fort Wayne and loving ND your whole life. They never offer, so you take the best out of state offer and you're happy with it. ND offers a week before signing day, and your dream just came true. I'd feel bad about decommitting, but I'd explain it to the coaches and if they were upset, well I wouldn't care because it's my dream.

Speaking of dreams, wake me up when recruiting's over lol.

JUST DO SOMETHING!!!

Like what?
An early signing period won't help. The only kids who'll do it are either the rock-solid, know-where-they-want-to-go-from-birth types or the ones who don't know any better and rush into an uninformed decision. Those often end badly. Also, with coaching turnover what it is, that's not really fair to kids who are recruited by one regime but made to play under another.
The "if you're looking we're looking" tough guy stance doesn't really help either. Because everyone knows it doesn't apply to the top kids. And so it's hard to remain credible with the rest of them.
Only thing that would change recruiting, IMO, is if you took the attention, and by extension the media and money, out of it, and really out of all of college football. And that train is miles out of the station by now.

In Hill's case, it's hard to blame the kid. He always had a thing for Texas, as many Texas kids do. They got a new coach and finally offered. He'd be crazy not to look. The timing sucks on our end, but we just did the same thing to Rutgers with Mokwuah. That's life. We've still got a shot to go tell him why ND's great. Hopefully he listens. But if not, wish him the best and move on.

Normally I'd understand this. But this scenario is a bit like IM's situation. ND took a chance on a low-profile recruit that didn't have many offers, none from big schools, and what does he do? He takes the notoriety ND helped get him and jumps ship days before he signs. It's very underhanded if you ask me. It's like ND is being used.

Unfortunately this goes along with the territory of recruiting on a national, coast to coast level. It is something ND prides itself on, but something that also has a risk of a kid choosing his local team. There is more than one way of looking at this. Imagine being any of the major D-1 schools across the county and knowing a team like Notre Dame can come in and "steal" a kid from your backyard. That has to suck for them. On the flip-side we have to deal with those same recruits choosing to stick with the home team. Another scenario to imagine is if ND was a geographical hotbed for recruits like much of the south is. Now think of the frustration we would endure if other schools continually came into our backyard and we watched recruits choose some faraway school over ND. It will suck if he de-commits, but it's not like we are plagued. Happens to everyone.

As people talked about a few years ago, (during the Ronald Darby decommitment IIRC) ND provides a security blanket no other school does. A GUARANTEED 4 year scholarship, regardless of health or production.

This doesn't apply to Hill's situation, but as far as "being used" goes, it would make sense to commit early to ND (even if you have other plans), and jump ship just before NSD if you have a clean bill of health. Let's be honest, most schools will (unethically) find a spot if you are worth your salt, even if there is no more room at the inn.
