Let me ask this question to you Maniac, if you were as passionate about Girls soccer recruiting as you are about boys football recruiting would you think it was still appropriate to tweet them?

The logic that recruits might enjoy an active Twitter fan base is no different than the logic that recruits might pick a school for hot girls. And the act of tweeting a recruit is really no different than sending them direct mail (and likely just as inconsequential). And honestly, I can see how having a bunch of fans follow an athlete and show them "love" might give you a leg up on a place like Stanford that simply has zero fans.

The problem is that by the letter of the NCAA law it's not permissible contact. That's problem #1. Problem #2 comes from people who cross the line and either ask creepy questions or insult a recruit.

I follow about every recruit we have for news. And I'll occasionally retweet one of their tweets if it's funny or meaningful or otherwise deserves a retweet for some reason. But acting like an obsessed creepy stalker is not going to win anyone to Notre Dame... well, unless you look like Adriana Lima. And frankly, if a recruit chooses Notre Dame because of the Twitter love there is probably a 95% chance they're not a fit for the culture of this program.

First off, thank you for responding with a civil and rational tone.

I have read the NCAA rules. Whether tweeting to recruits violates these rules is debatable. I will admit it does by the very broadest interpretation. However, this does not seem to be the standard the NCAA is applying. They've done nothing to enforce it. A few FBS coaches have even openly encouraged their team’s fans to tweet to recruits with no apparent admonishment from the NCAA.

I agree that the kind of players who will succeed at Notre Dame are less likely to place much importance upon the treatment they receive from the fan base. However, many players currently on the roster, and several members of GoldenArmy14, have encouraged fans to interact with them during their recruitment.

I used to be anti-tweeting recruits, but I've changed my stance a bit on it. I don't have a problem with people tweeting recruits as long as:

1) You're always positive.
2) Never ask recruits questions, only answer them accurately.
3) You don't mind wasting your time.
4) You never dog the school, coaches, decisions, administration, QB, etc.

The reality is some recruits enjoy interacting with fans. But you have to be intelligent, rational, and mature to do it the right way.

I like the idea of defining a set of rules for tweeting to recruits. I agree with the ones you’ve listed and would add a few more, such as these:

5) Never include inappropriate content
6) Never get personal
7) Never DM recruits (private messages)
8) Never be disrespectful (even if they just flipped to Florida or UCLA)
9) Never pressure or harass recruits.

Tough to imagine this scenario, but yes, it’s still appropriate. It isn’t like I would be trying to talk to a female recruit privately. It’s a public forum. As long as the content of the tweet is appropriate, I don’t see a problem with it.

Grow the **** up.

I've never tweeted a recruit, but I'm not against it if the right person is tweeting them (ex, TP).

When Quick tweeted out that photo of him edited with ND in it, I almost tweeted 'Awesome edit, Go Irish!'.

But I didn't. And if I did, I would have never engaged in conversation with him, or asked questions, etc.

This, I don't have problems with fans doing, ND fans included.

Adult fans should always know better than to engage in discussions with recruits over Twitter.

On the flip side, recruits should know that if you want to flaunt your popularity via Twitter, you can expect some backlash from idiots.

It's a dog-eat-dog world and recruits that seek attention by tweeting everything are wearing Milkbone underwear....

That's what I'm saying. I know I'm intelligent enough and understand the lines, where I would never pry them for info, ask about visits, say anything bad about opposing team, etc. If I ever did it, it would be something direct, simple, pro-ND, and close ended, etc.

really good article on social media interaction with recruits. SIAP.

http://www.subwaydomer.com/2014-articles/january/how-to-not-be-creepy-recruiting-internet-guy.htmlhttp://

I am proposing a set of standards:

Absolutely NO Facebook. Do not "friend" these recruits or join their "groups." Facebook is much too personal. Even asking to be a friend just to follow what they say is too intrusive.
If you are on Twitter, I think it is OK to follow a recruits account. It's basically public information, so seeing what info is out there is no big deal. However... if a recruit's account is protected, I recommend not following. A protected account needs the approval of the user, which is a lot like Facebook friending. Also, DO NOT INTERACT WITH A RECRUIT FOR ANY REASON. It doesn't matter if you are just saying something like,
"Congrats man! Eastern Michigan needed you and your decision just made my day!" Or,
"Our class is filling up! Still have room at Wyoming for great TE recruits like you. Be a Cowboy and be a LEGEND 4eva!!!"
None of this is OK.

That should be simple enough. Basically, don't interact with someone else's kid. Don't become involved. Don't be a factor- whether good or bad.

I wouldn't worry about it. Dude just has an axe to grind with you and can't let it go.

You do know who Mercy is, right? I think we all should have an axe to grind with him.

Dude has been a recruit creeper since way back. Constantly trying to mettle by talking directly with recruits.

There are thousands of fan that tweet/comment to recruits all of the time and that's not going to stop. From what's been posted, IrishFanJMercy is one of the better ones that does it, and keeps it positive and not pushy (correct me if I'm wrong).

What I'm say is, he's the least of our worries, so I don't have a problem with what he does. It's the ones that are pushy and pass out bad/incorrect info/trash decisions that bothers me.

I do, but I think he could get a little more respect from fellow posters. He gets attacked for no good reason on almost every post.

Thank you. Regardless of his past, there's no reason he needs to be attacked every time he posts, especially since I've seen him post nothing but legitimate questions and recruiting discussions lately (aside from the above in response to GB).

He has been a problem in the past, that's a fact. There is a reason that everybody pretty much hates the guy.

I know that you think it's ok to directly contact recruits, which I vehemently disagree with, for the following reasons.

1) There is no reason that an adult should contact a minor, unsolicited. It's creepy as fuq.

2) Positive or not, our staff has a specific plan for each recruit, they don't need help from fans or "positive vibes" from creepy fans. They don't know you, they don't need your vibes, you are not their friend.

Regardless, JMercy is a creepy dude. Always has been.

He's been registered for a while, but in the short time that he's become active on IE, he's been a legitimate contributor, asking on-topic questions in appropriate places.

Let's give him a chance, and maybe there can be productive discussions at some point, no?

Recruits like it though. For instance, Tevon Coney is always retweeting positive stuff from ND fans.

I bet the staff has no problem with fans tweeting recruits because it shows that ND fans care. Everyone hates the pushy/incorrect/trashing fans. That is the problem. As long as IrishFanJMercy or anyone else keeps it positive, I will never have a problem with it.

FYI, I do not tweet recruits and I don't have picturegram or anything other than facebook/twitter.

I politely disagree. I think the coaches would like for everyone to leave the recruiting to them.

In a perfect world, yes. In today's world, no.

If a recruit takes to twitter to announce he's taking a visit to ND and hears crickets, compared to announcing that he's visiting OSU and OSU fans show their excitement and pride, that will leave an impression on him. IMO.
