Yeah I made the mistake of attacking non stop and getting a bunch of trophies instead of saving the resources and leveling up buildings/ resource storage. Now I am just specifically targeting bases with a lot of resources and taking them but forfeiting the match so I lose the trophies so I stay down in Bronze. I got up too high and people were starting to just mow down my base when they attacked.

I figured that out as well. I've been basically attacking with a massive amount of goblins so I can get everything quick then getting out.
Though I did find 2 different people who leave their mortar unprotected and go hard after that.

Sometimes when I try attacking, I can't train my troops. Is there a way to get more gems without actually buying them?

You get more gems by completing various accomplishments or you can find them when you destroy trees/stones/mushrooms. Click on the icon of the woman.

I've been playing for about a week. Grow slowly. I don't like upgrading my town hall until I have literally everything possible unlocked on my current level, starting with gold and elixir.

Yes don't upgrade until you've maxed you all other things.

Don't worry about either, and don't use your gems. Just focus on good and elixir and upgrade everything you can before town hall.

Personally, it forces me to maximize everything (especially walls) before I unlocking the other items. Other than that I don't know of anything.

There is a loot multiplier that makes it difficult to stack cheese when you upgrade your TH. For instance a TH level 6 that attacks another level 6 is looking at a multiplier of 1.0. If you attack down two TH levels you get hit with a penalty multiplier of 0.50

There are other multipliers based on the level of dude you are attacking.
