It seemed to me that we cooled on him after we got Jay Hayes ... Maybe the staff felt that they were too similar and we didn't need two such similar guys. With the loss of Tuitt and Dickerson and the change in philosophy with BVG's arrival there's gotta be a spot for him now.

Thought I had read elsewhere that MSU was trending as the team to beat.....is that true / still the case?

Still MSU and UM out front but he has opened it up to consider UF and others. The Midwest connection might appeal to him and his parents like the things about ND that you would expect them to.

It seemed it was more speculation on Wiltfong/Loy's part then it was anything they've heard but I could be wrong.

Nothing has happened here. It is a story line to follow as things have been moving quickly on the DL situation.

I had always heard staff thought he lacked passion and intensity. If you look at the kids that we have committed in our front 7 they all have passion and intensity in spades. Think this staff puts a real premium on that.

Wow, Wiltfong spoke with Greg Mcdowell and it sounds like we could very easily slide right back into this recruitment. Greg actually makes it seem like we are his favorite and he's going to work on Malik starting today. Greg says that ND offers the best opportunity of academics and football. He also mentions location. Wants Malik to go away to college but not that far. After reading that and if Greg were the prospect, I'd think we were the leader.

“It’s not too late,” Greg McDowell said. “When I talked to the coach, I was wondering what was going on as far as the recruitment with Malik and he informed me the previous recruiter took the job at Miami (Ohio) and somehow the communication got messed up.

“I’ve been high on Notre Dame. It’s all about getting Malik to talk to them about it. He likes Notre Dame. He liked them early in the season. With the lack of recruitment, he thought they lost interest but the coach expressed to me they had a breakdown of communication.

Jesus those are some powerful quotes...

“I’ll be talking to him about it and we’ll go from there,” Greg said. “To me, I believe they offer the best package, especially from an educational standpoint.”

His dad LOVES him some ND. We need this to work out like the Morgan recruitment.

“I plan on making it down there,” Greg McDowell said. "After I talked to coach, I was really glad to hear from him because I do want Malik to get the experience of going away from home but not too far. If I can get him to think about Notre Dame and what they have to offer, not just football but the future, I think that would be the best route for him.

Dad's are 2-0 so far this year as it pertains to ND, with both Hood and Morgan's Dad winning out. Let's hope for 3-0.

It's crazy because early in the process everyone basically thought ND was way out front... and then we sort of filled up with Dickerson and the like. Then people thought Michigan, but Michigan sucks. So then people thought Michigan State.

Can he build a good relationship with Elston in this time? Will he like BVG? Would be a really good add who could play 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT, and then it'd be nice to add one more DT on top of that.

Always really liked his versatility like you said.

Seriously???

If actually true (which I somewhat doubt-- sounds like an excuse), that is piss poor on the staff's part. "Yeah, Malik, we've always liked you. But you know, that one coach left, and Brian thought Mike was handling it...but Mike thought Steve was handling it...and Steve thought Kerry was on it...and then Kerry talked to the new Brian about it...and then we realized nobody had contacted you. Sorry 'bout that. But yeah, we really like you."

I'm lukewarm on this recruitment. The DL needs bodies, no doubt. Circumstances have changed even more so on this front (Dickerson). He does seem to posses some flexibility, position-wise (DT/DE). But I think the staff had their "breakdown of communication" for a reason.

Willing to bet they just didn't think he was a good fit for a 3-4. He's just too good a player for them to cool on him entirely like that.

Like that they have the Martin excuse to use, but translation = We were after others, but the bottom was falling out of our DT recruitment so we started going back after every DT available.

I like that he just got his fifth star. Get these elite kids and then figure out where to play them.

I don't see the benefit of the BS. Just say we have openings with Dickerson's unfortunate situation. Use is as a chance to show your commitment to those verbally committed to you and pump up your credibility rather than sound like the f-ing Keystone Cops are running your recruiting operation.

Back yard you make room for a kid like this anyway. smh

From when Hayes was wavering in his commitment awhile ago, I remember reading that Diaco promised Hayes that if he stayed true and committed that we wouldn't recruit guys over the top of him. I'm assuming that's what actually happened but its hard to say that to kids or there parents.

What do you think that reason is? Do you just not like him becuase the staff cooled on him at one point or do not like his game. I look at his tape, offers and ratings... and he seems like a stud to me.

Yep, this seems most likely to me, and is consistent with what I've read and heard.
