I seriously doubt he can have much impact at this late stage of the recruiting season.

Does anyone have an educated guess about the "VanGorder" effect. Other than marvelous hair, and the passionate stache, anyone have any insightful thoughts about how he might impact recruiting this year. Part of me hopes he can dial up a few studs in the South at this late stage.

I seriously doubt he can have much impact at this late stage of the recruiting season.

Yeah agree. His biggest impact may be reassuring the guys already committed, and maybe giving #7 another reason to return for a senior season (more aggressive defense in 2014 --> better stats --> better grade for 2015 draft. Okay, one can hope right??)

Yeah. Might be different if he was currently a college coach and had existing relationships with recruits he might be able to bring here. But it seems unlikely he'll be able to do much of that at this point. You would hope he and Tuitt have been talking, though. Nail down that six-star recruit.

Updated to reflect Tuitt leaving and Morgan commitment.

Look for ND to try very hard to take an "explosive" player who can be a return man (likely Nelson), and once that happens they'll be sitting at 85 scholarships with Lombard/Moore/Collinsworth/Utupo. The other player likely to be targeted is Terrence Alexander, but that is not a certainty. Should we land both, Notre Dame will be in the position of having to probably say goodbye to Utupo unless there is a decommitment (very possible, but not probable right now) or there is a transfer before ND has to be officially official about 5th years (rather likely, but not a guarantee).

Although most see this, some seem to feel that Lombard could be "optional" as a keeper. Unless he is badly "unplayably" hurt, this is just a zero-possibility [unless he himself wanted to take off somewhere.]

Lombard is an OLine veteran and a good one --- grew continuously better as he's gone. Valuable, valuable as gold. Big and smart, he'll probably make an NFL team [I did not say drafted]. If Kelly/Hiestand just waved goodbye, I'd think I just went into the Twilight Zone --- even given great young'uns like Elmer [LT], Stanley[RT], and Biven [probably LG]. McGlinchey would not be a sounder choice for a starting position [with positional shifts] vs Lombard --- note that Hiestand started Lombard over even Elmer.

Given that: My finishing dream would be McKenzie and Quick, lock the barn door, and sit back with active hope for one more pleasant surprise.

Quick look at Rivals, wow what a drop off in star power once you get out of the top ten teams. Combining 5 and 4 stars, we have 14 versus Bama and Tennesee tops with 17. Texas at #12 only has 7 which is were most of the teams are from #12 to #25.

From a recruiting standpoint, is there really that much difference between the top 10 teams' classes? It seems there is definitely a top "tier" with significant drop off after that but maybe not THAT much difference within the top.

So its easy to think #7 class isn't that impressive at first blush but upon closer inspection I really like where we stand. We are building as much depth as anyone and really double the top end talent of most top 25 teams. (gross oversimplification and overreliance on pure "stars" but quick and easy eye test).

Lombard is a starter. He has more starts than any returning lineman. The stark difference between anyone who would willingly wave goodbye and one who would not even think of it contains the lines of anyone who knows football and anyone who has the ability to coach at each level. No one would want to leave Lombard behind, barring medical, at least no one should say it out loud.

That said. I have heard many different ways that McGlinchey will be hard to keep out of the lineup. Apparently he has speed and athleticism just not seen among linemen. Someone said that he could play kick coverage this year, if they were willing to burn his shirt. Of course they weren't. But watching him on the kick off team would be a thing to behold. Especially if he was first down in coverage!

Recruit the best player that fits your needs for the next few years and see what happens. A lot of other things go into recruiting as well. Can they be coached? Are they fiercly competitive? Can they be flexible? Always concerns me when a recruit mentions a depth chart. Ok to think it but do they have the competitive drive to come in and take the position? Stars are important as most are rated high for a reason. But I would rather have a three star with all these attributes than a four or five star that has to be tended to all the time - ala Elam.

Recruit from three states - Florida, Georgia, and Alabama - and see what happens - participation in the championship game! It's a pretty simple formula for success. Eighty percent of the players who will see time on the field tonight come from these three states, and the rest from Louisiana and Texas. What's remarkable - seventy five percent of the Florida State rooster come from in-state, and the rest - Winston AL, Smith GA, Tre' Jackson GA, Erving GA, Greene GA - fit the three state formula. You can count on one hand the players that don't fit the three state formula for tonight's game - Matias NJ, eddie Goldman DC, Darby MD, Edwards MS.

They are reporting news is starting to turn in a positive direction on IM, and that there is even a possibility he could be considered a commit as soon as the end of the week.

Other than that, nothing really new. Still in it for Juju, Quick, Smith and Alexander, and could sign anywhere from 24-27 guys.

Shouldn't this have been bolded, capitalized, and end with exclamation marks? That is great news.

Updated post GAIII declaration. Makes McKenzie even that much more valuable.

I'd also bet my bottom dollar on a Josh Atkinson transfer, which would make Terrence Alexander more than just a luxury.

Yeah. And what if Jalen Brown goes too. Erik Brown, come on down?

Does Terrence project as a wr cause that's where Josh has mainly worked this season.

The absolute max we can take is 27. That is quite small per SEC standards.

Is it 27 w GAIII, Tuitt and any possible transfers leaving? Factor in a very small group of 5y returning (1 or 2) is it still only 27? Are you basing it off of 2 EE counting towards last years class plus a max of 25 for this year? Is that the math? Appreciate the clarification.

Terrence is a CB. True, Josh worked at WR, but only because, with the injury to Daniel Smith, there was a need for a physical slot WR behind C.J., and Josh was passed on the CB depth chart by Cole Luke and Devin Butler, two freshmen, so it's not like he was gonna play there. Josh still provided emergency depth at CB, and if he leaves we will need to replace that depth.

27 max is related to only having 2 EEs. Attrition will have no impact on that number. Regardless, it's unlikely we hit north of 25, but it's possible with miracles.

So ND may not get to 85 on schollies even w 27 if the transfers start (or continue). If Jalen Brown, Josh Atkinson, and any others(?) were to transfer out, we'd likely be under the max again. I guess that would leave room for additional 5Y to stay. Anyone have the numbers? I know there is a spreadsheet out there somewhere.

We are at 80 with no 5th years right now. Figure Moore and Lombard are locks to come back, so we have 3 spots for targets / additional 5th years with no more attrition. Obviously if other transfers pop up, that # grows.
