Personally I would like to see an outside hire for DC and a promotion from within for OC.
I think an outside hire for DC could bring in a new system that may fit our players better and simplify things, which I think helps a defense play faster.
On the flip side I don't see Kelly letting a non "Kelly System" OC take over the offense just as Kelly gets EG back to execute his offense.
Just my .02

I agree. Kelly is going to basically run it or lay down the map to follow for anyone that comes in anyway.

I watched him coach at MTSU here in Nashville. He has had good runs as a DC and recruiter in Texas. He had a bad year this year and was fired. But that does make him a bad DC for one year. Also the year that Mack was bad as well and the offense for that matter.

Their defense was horrific in 2012 as well.

I know it is a stretch but, I would love to see if Kelly could get Diaz if he was to leave since Mack is gone.

As a Coordinator or just LB coach?

He's been a DC since 2004, I'd think it'd be awfully tough to get him for anything less than co-DC, no?

On Pendergast:

Pendergast took over a USC defense that gave up 394 yards per game in 2012, the second highest total in school history, and over 24 points per game, the fourth highest mark. In 2013 under Pendergast, the Trojans led the conference in passing defense and red zone defense and were No. 2 in total defense, run defense and scoring defense.

And there was success against both ends of the offensive spectrum -- his defense held up against the physical power running attack of Stanford and against the highest-ranked passing game in the country with Fresno State.

What Pendergast did to USC's defense in one year was pretty freaking awesome. I'd like the hire as a DC.

Unlike Luke Fickell, Ed Orgeron, and Bob Diaco, Clancy Pendergast does not like to recruit. In eight seasons of college ball, he has not shown much interest in the recruiting process.

Hmm ... Not a great trait for a college coach, but then again Diaco was no different. He really only had the one big recruiting win (Ishaq).

I still have to trust Kelly's selection, whomever that may be. He knows what he/ND needs and who fits the mold.

After doing some reading on Pendergast, I am intrigued what hi hire could mean for the Irish defense. I'm not sure what he ran at Cal, but his 3-4 / 5-2 defense at SC worked well for them this past year. With our crop of OLBs, the 5-2 look may be a good counter to some of the spread offenses we'll be dealing with over the next few years. It puts an added burden on the secondary, but I believe KVR, Luke, and Redfield can make the adjustments and be up to the pressure. The only real question mark in my mind is at NT. But that's a known quantity/dead horse topic at this point, barring an unforeseen recruiting twist.

And on the recruiting side, I'll trade a smooth-talking pitchman at DC for a guy that will produce a shut down defense. If Pendergast can deliver results on the field, those results will pay dividends on the recruiting trail. Let the assistants pick-up the slack.

This is a great first post, and I couldn't agree more. Welcome to IE, have a rep.

Pendergast is definitely an intriguing hire. I think the idea of him more so than anyone else thus far. To answer the recruiting questions and his motivation to engage in the process...I think a nasty defense will sell itself.

This year, Diaco has been involved in the recruitment Quenton Nelson, Jay Hayes, Blankenship, Watkins, Andrew Trumbetti, Yeargin, Greer Martini, and Kolin Hill(eight out of twenty two). I think recruiting prowess played a role in Connecticut's choice for head ball coach.

big game for Fickell with Alabama coming to town, a big W there for him in contrast to a perhaps a ND L/bad peformance would be a striking optic

On paper, he seems to have a pretty good staff.

Great contract, too. The perks are awesome.

It seems like Fickell (and Phil Longo) tried to go with an Air Raid offense but Wisconsin doesn't have the athletes (or QB) for it. Maybe they should stick with what Wisconsin has always been good at?
Also, frankly, probably no team in the Big Ten - except maybe Iowa - will suffer more from ending divisions and adding several new powerhouse programs.
Could be a rough go for Fickell. But maybe he can be our next DC when Golden retires?

Wisconsin fans have a bizarre hatred of ND considering the complete lack of history between us. Hope that program struggles.
